I don't understand this approach. CarPlay or whatever the google equivalent is, is universal and can be updated easily. It can't be that hard to support. I hate many of the in car navigation systems. Why remove it? Am I missing something. Do car manufacturers have to pay some licensing or something to have it as an option in cars?
The Google product is called "Android Auto"

What are the chances any higher ups from GM even sees all this backlash of their bad decision? Its definitely been made aware on other news sites with all similar reactions.

Anderson said that GM's in-house infotainment option offers a "much more immersive environment" and can "do so many more things" than ‌CarPlay‌.

So out of touch. And to call it a "Jobsian" move is pathetically weak sauce.

GM seems to be ok with excluding lots of potential customers from considering buying their cars. Its somewhat bizarre…

A more Jobsian approach would be to determine what consumers positively loathe about todays competitive product offerings (things like subscriptions, over complexity, feature bloat and never really owning what you’ve bought) and NOT doing that. Completely bucking the trend. That’s Jobsian.

GM: Just build great cars and your future is secure. That’s all auto buyers really want. Leave the computer stuff to the experts.

Once the Apple Music, contact and calendar data in your iPhone becomes directly accessible to an in-vehicle infotainment system CarPlay becomes redundant....... This will happen eventually ...yes even Apple will eventually need to succumb to this reality.

Google already does all of this for Android users with Google built-in for vehicles. And GM is moving to Google Built-in for more and more vehicles. In these systems all android users data is accessible to the cars infotainment system. In addition, Android apps can be loaded directly into the cars infotainment system. Connecting a phone to this type of system is totally unnecessary.

“But frankly, it's a very Jobsian approach to things. The removal of the disk drive, nobody liked that, everybody on the forums and Facebook was complaining about it, but to that he said, "Look, guys, flash storage really is the future. Get on board, you'll see that." That's kind of what we're saying here, in fact that's exactly what we're saying.”

What a silly comparison.
The disc drive was removed so the computers could get thinner and lighter and faster.
What does removing CarPlay get you? It’s certainly not faster or better.
In all seriousness, it is the most idiotic statement I've heard from a company in a long time. It's so dumb, that it makes me not want to consider purchasing a GM car, or anything related to GM ever again. If they just said "we don't wan't to support it", fine. But that comparison with Jobs and the floppy disk is straight up idiotic. That person either has zero clue what they're talking about, or they're spouting pure BS.

This is very dumb. Give people a choice and if yours is better people will ditch CarPlay. I highly doubt it.

I wouldn’t buy a new car without CarPlay. And when they go bankrupt again (they will) I’m sure they’ll come crying for another bailout.

well ok then, I will never buy a GM vehicle again, I will not back down, their decision has it's consequences, I won't miss them going forward, if enough people make a decision like mine, GM will not go out of business but they will miss me, my relatives, and friends that I will steer away from their product... enjoy the rest of your day...

Just another reason, of the ENDLESS reasons, why I despise GM's corporate ethos.
Comprised of cadre of overly, self-important executives that think "they too can design!"

Thanks to the US Tax payer for bailing GM out in 2009 we have to suffer their continuously bad logic, hubris, and aesthetic.

Q. Anyone else notice, that GM trucks no longer fit in a regular parking space or home garage?

I remember a time when Corvettes and Cadillac's once had class and style.

Now, their tired, old-guard, angry, bankrupt, wannabe culture will surely destroy what's left of a once visionary US company.

But, not before they make their 2027 Silverado twice as big, twice as heavy, and 2.37 mpg!
… let's not forget it will also be "boxier" than ever before.

Thankfully, the US still has, um, er, Ford to save us, maybe, hope, hope.
Oh, wait, the only non-"earth-destroying"-truck Ford sells is a crossover (that abducted the Mustang brand) and is all-electric!

Oh woe is me.

GM understands something I hate about cars these days: car manufacturers are software companies. We're in an era of huge, distracting screens. Car companies that aren't getting really, really good at the whole widget of electronics hardware and software harmony are going to wither away in the long-run. Outsourcing to Apple makes no sense. You can't differentiate against any other CarPlay-using vehicles.

I think this is a large part of why CarPlay Ultra isn't getting a lot of adoption. Car makers want to own the experience. I think CarPlay classic, or whatever, is a different thing though-- it has very little to do with the car and is mostly an infotainment system. Car makers have integrated 3rd party infotainment systems for generations, they know how to do that.

I think the problem here is that car companies aren't software companies, they're manufacturing companies. Every piece of software I see written by a car company is garbage because it's slow, buggy, goes out of date quickly, etc. They're great at building mechanical systems at scale. They're above average at installing electronics into those platforms. They suck at software and at this point shouldn't try.

No worries. Jobs has been pre-blamed.

Edit: Toned down the sarcasm

So, will they allow sideloading of apps to their "devices"????? Are they ready to deal with UK, EU, and other regulations as they try to export these vehicles? IMHO, they did not think this through very well.

GM thinks that they are Tesla. Good luck selling vehicles and enjoy losing customers! Worst decision they ever made!

No...GM does not think that. If Apple users bought a new car every year, as they do with new cellphones, then maybe GM would have something to worry about. But the business model for new-car sales is not based on selling a new car every year to the same buyers.

Frankly, GM —or any car manufacturer —can provide a more concise and inclusive interface for its cars than Apple or Android, never having to worry about the mind-f***s Apple comes up with every so often, such as Liquid Glass or changing the GUI of an app.

I have an Equinox EV.... I want CarPlay... but it is not the deal breaker many of you are making it out to be

Only real annoyance is iTunes is not native.... you could use Spotify(which I do not). I just play my play list and it's just like when I did it on my other car that has CarPlay.

Only really really annoying thing is text message which I usually don't respond to any way.

Everything else about the Equinox EV is awesome. Got my dad a Trax which is their cheapest car and has Car Play. Way better than what I could get from a Toyota for 10k+ more. For 34k the Toyata Rav4 gives you hub caps and is the base model.

So cool... if you're willing to drop 10k+ more for a car with CarPlay.

Drive a Tesla Y. I miss CarPlay while still loving the car. Obviously Apple Maps is no longer a big part of my life as the Tesla Nav system integrates with self driving which I use every day. Apple Music is supported by Tesla in a desultory manner allowing for playback in the core application (independent of my iPhone) and the use of the car's native voice command system to select and play songs and playlists, but it cannot play my entire library or even a significant play list on shuffle and the playback quality is low. The same is true for Spotify, but the playback quality is better.

Messages are supported even worse, they kind of work but not well. Podcast support is ok but not great. There is no App Store for downloading functionality like teams or iHeart Radio etc that someone might want.

I am all in on Tesla and Apple and wish they worked and played better together.

Perhaps GM should consider reading the comments on this article before moving forward such ill advised decision...
