No, I have used Photo Booth for this test just because it reliably triggers the gfx card switching from "Integrated" (Intel HD3000) to "Discrete" (AMD), which reliably makes my MBP freeze every 3rd to 5th time, without using any 3rd party software.

Ah, there we go. The integrated/discrete switching process. Yeah, I have no experience with that. IIRC Apple had some issues with it bad when it was introduced.

And, well, yea, it looks like the majority actually has no problems.
But this MBP of mine is quite new (2 months old now) and is the same model that is currently being sold. So my alarm bells are ringing here.

That sucks, sorry man. However, in support of your experience, perhaps there aren't enough users out there that both own your model of MBP *and* have installed the Lion GM. If my guess isn't too far off, we might see more reports of this problem rolling in. It just might be too early for it to be felt just yet.

Exactly what I was trying to say. And this will really suck big time once more people are affected. I still hope Apple will get this right before release, else we'll see some outrage happening and I honestly do hope it won't come to that.

Have you narrowed it down to a particular card? EG, does it only happen when you switch to discrete or integrated? Or is it in the air?

Happens both ways, as far as I can tell. Doesn't seem to matter what you switch to, it's more like the fact that you do switch.
But don't quote me on that just yet, I would have to do more testing (which I can't at the moment). I am fairly certain about it though.

. . .

Just a bunch of folks in Cupertino . . .

Edit: Seriously, if this is the latest model MBP it certainly is well tested. This might be a hardware problem, even though it works fine in 10.6.8. If this happens with 10.7 - I would take it directly to an Apple store.

I hate to repeat myself, but if they are going to release this build, the Apple Care staff and the Geniuses will have their hands full, and there's going to be a lot of bad press.
Complete system lockups on a brand new MBP are a big problem.
Even in the unlikely case that it's caused by some faulty/non-Lion-aware 3rd party app, lots of people will experience it.
And the fact that the same machine runs rock-solid without any problems under SL still makes me rule out hardware issues.

Snow Leopard: Zero crashes in 2 months (heavy use, with VMware etc. pp.)
Lion GM: Hourly freezes, with the power button being the only "solution".
Restored from backup, "Clean" reinstall, I've tried them all.

But ok, I give up. It's a minor tiny weeny little bug, and completely my own fault, I get it...

Sorry, but this is complete nonsense.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that there will be no GM2 and that this is the version that will be released and that Apple's reputation will be just fine thank you.

Obviously, there is something screwy in your particular setup that is creating the problem. Many of us, including myself, are running Lion just fine on our MacBook Pros. Once it's released and you can call support about the problem, I'm sure they will resolve it.

Well, thanks for the flowers.
I can only report what I am experiencing personally, whether you like it or not.
I am glad you have no problems. Good for you.

Let me repeat this one final time:
I did a fresh vanilla install of 11A511 and it freezes.
No freezes under Snow Leopard, with lots of 3rd party software installed.

Well, maybe my particular MBP has a hardware fault that shows only with Lion and not with SL (and not with Windows 7, either, by the way). You be the judge on how likely that is.
I'm done with this topic now.
Once Lion is released, if it still freezes my MBP, I will contact Apple Care.

Yeah I miss that too. Can't really figure out what it is snapping to when I double click the divider now...:(

I'd assume this is the case. When I installed Lion on my 2008 Mac Pro, I started getting parity errors from one of the DIMM's installed, which never happened with SL. But it was always the same DIMM. So I bought new RAM and installed and the errors are gone. That DIMM was faulty, SL just never used it to the degree that the fault was visible in day to day operation but Lion did.
