When you send emails what address does it come from? I considered doing this too but I couldn't find a way to get email to send *from* my Gmail address with iCloud.

I rarely send emails, but if I had to I'd probably just use the gmail app. Not the most elegant solution, but it works.

Correct. It's working now -- but if you delete the account and re-add it, it probably won't work. At least this is what I've heard.

Currently, gmail push is working on my iPhone 5 but it never worked on my brand new iPad 4th gen even with the same settings. Apparently January of this year they disabled Exchange ActiveSync for free gmail accounts. I'm assuming that, eventually, free accounts will all be using either IMAP or the free gmail app.

The problem is you just heard.. I deleted my account just now on iPhone 5 and ipad mini and inputted my credentials back and as usual they worked..

Remember to put your server as m.google.com them put all the way your user@gmail.com on username. If you didn't put the gmail.com this will create a problem.

It's device driven. It works on devices that were originally setup prior to 1/31/13, so if you purchase or replace your device it won't work unless you have a paid business account.

Not quite sure if that's truly the case. Got a new iPhone 5 a week into February, restored from an iPhone 4 backup, and had/have Gmail through Exchange working without any issues.

it pretty much is the case. i got a replacement phone mid february and its not working for me. maybe since you were in the 1st week of feb, you made the cutoff.

I had a device replacement the second week of Feb and gmail exchange no longer worked. I have to say though that I'm loving the gmail app. I use labels a lot so not having them on the Mail app was always a big pain. With the app I get push notifications, access to all my labels, and a newer UI.

GMail is more important than iOS to me (us it for both work and personal accounts) so this move is actually pushing me towards Android. I blame Apple more than I blame Google for this. I like the GMail app on iOS but way too many glitches with the badge numbers and not being able to set it as the default email account due to Apple's restrictions. Waiting to see what the Galaxy SIV is like before deciding b/w that and the HTC One.

This was most certainly a move by Google, not Apple. Apple added the Microsoft Exchange capability to be able to compete in the enterprise market. Google now has to equally compete by not supporting Activesync on a competitor's device. From a business standpoint, it makes perfect sense. From a user standpoint, it sucks.

The Gmail app sucking on iOS is likely similar to why Microsoft Office sucks on a Mac. The product is out there because of consumer demand, but by no means is the company going to concentrate on creating a superior product on a competitor's platform.

No you're wrong. GMail actually supports IMAP (idle) that would allow for push if the iPhone supported it. There is no reason Google should have to pay a licensing fee to Microsoft to allow push when they already utilize an open source platform that maintains the same functionality? Throw in the fact that they update and release the GMail app to try and add the additional functionality and it's clearly not about making customers switch devices. Apple needs to embrace open source platforms, allow users to change their default applications (like the email app & browser choice), and also allow 3rd party mail clients to run in the background similar to how the built-in mail app does.

Also wondering this. Though it seems to always be Name@iCloud.com on Behalf of Name@gmail.com, which is kind of a ****** way of doing things.

I have my gmail forwarded to my icloud.com to utilize push. I obviously have my icloud account set up to push and the gmail setup as manual. When I reply to the email I just select the "from" address and change it to my gmail account. Hope that makes sense. Let me know if not.

But no offline capability--can't look through and read messages when you might not be online.

It will be sent from iCloud unless you add the gmail account as well. I have my gmail setup in imap and set to fetch manually. This way I get the push through iCloud and then change the from address to my gmail address. Have been doing this for about a week with no issues.

It worked!

Only disconnect now is that read/unread copies don't necessarily sync up... but I'll test this out for a few days and see how I like it.

Yeah, forwarding to Outlook.com is still superior in this regard because you can send from your Gmail account at Outlook.com too. However, it's nice to only have to sync up to one service using iCloud.
