With Gmail, you are the product. Google wants you to retain as much email as possible so that they can profile you for adverting campaigns. Regarding "All Mail" messages staying in your inbox, you just need to adjust some settings. Archived messages don't stay in your Inbox when configured properly.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to look into the archive settings.

Yep, basically. Google knows all.

Wow - can't believe people are still using this instead of Google Inbox. I switched months ago and never looked back.

Not too long ago they finally released the iPad client and it works in Safari now so no need to ever use the old gmail interface anymore...

What advantage does the Google Inbox app have over Gmail app (in particular for those who simply use email as email and not for various task/agenda/etc. types of purposes)?

This. I absolutely love the Outlook App for iOS. It handles my Gmail mail perfectly.

I use Gmail to handle mail from my own domain and am able to respond to emails with the domain address as the "from" address rather then the Gmail address. Can the Outlook app do this as well? I'd love to give it a try.

Don't you need an invite for Google Inbox?

Also, I can't stand how Gmail separates my inboxes. I never seem to get a message from the box I'm already in. It should be called GMailSwitch.

Nice update, but why archive and not delete? I never have understood archive as an action in email. It doesn't get rid of it, it throws it to my "All Mail" section but still stays in my inbox. I would have preferred "Reply" and "Delete" as options.

Furthermore, these actions really don't work on the lock screen if you have a passcode/TouchID...I have to unlock my phone to complete the action. I also still have to leave the app I'm in to reply to an email. Not sure why it says I can do it right from the notification. Disappointing.

it shouldn't stay in your inbox. if so there's something wrong with your gmail settings.

but everything else you said is on point.

You aren't using Gmail correctly.

Is anyone else having problems with the gmail 4.0 app and/or gmail inbox app with iOS 8.2? I'm not seeing any notifications and when I check for mail in the apps, new messages already appear read.

I recently switched from an iPhone 5 and am now using an iPhone 6 Plus.

I've already tried:
1. Signing out of all accounts and apps
2. Deleting and reinstalling the apps
3. Restarting the phone
4. Toggling notification settings

Any help is appreciated - thank you!
