I find the calendar/contact sync to be pretty perfect. They haven't worked out mail sync yet.

Gmail natively syncs with the email app of the iPhone, but for the calendar you have two alternatives:

  1. Use Outlook or iCal to sync with your Google Calendar account. This synchronization only occurs when you connect your iPhone to the PC.
  2. Use Google Sync that syncs the calendar app of the iPhone with your Google Calendar using a cloud-based system. The synchronization, in this case, occurs when your iPhone is connected to the Internet.
Google Sync is available here.

I hope that I helped you in some way. ;)

I've got GMail set up on my phone and use folders to manage it all (labels on Gmail). I've got it set to check hourly for emails (I don't need it immediately) and so my battery life is decent with 3.0 (was great with 2.2.1). I've had no problems after figuring out how Google labels translate to folders.

I tried using Google Calendar sync which was added in 3.0 but they way it works is garbage compared to MobileMe. Changes take a while to show up and the way multiple calendars are displayed in iCal is atrocious (they're called Delegates). It may be free but I think the current iteration leaves a lot to be desired. So much so I'm going to fork over the money after my trial for MobileMe JUST for the Calendar side of things. ... Okay, and Find My iPhone which works really, really well.

Is there a way to sync just the calendars rather than contacts? I only have people in my phone that I actually want to call... and by first names only.

Actually there is a 3rd option, CalDAV: http://www.atnan.com/2009/6/19/configuring-multiple-caldav-google-calendars-on-iphone-os-3-0

Hey guys, when you hit the TRASH icon in mail (for those who have mail synced to gmail), that has the same effect as DELETE and not ARCHIVE correct?

Gmail works with the current iPhone. There isn't built in support for Google Calendar but it could be possible with a 3rd party app. You can also sync your Google Calendar with iCal which then syncs with the iPhone.

If you want push syncing of calendars then you need to get mobileme.

Question answered by someone else. Mine works great.

google calendar is amazing w/the iphone. I use spanning sync to sync it w/ical.
and if you use twitter, you can gust call twitter, say calendar, and speak your appointment w/all details in to the phone and it shows up in google calendar, then gets synced to ical, very cool.
bl

how do you do this?

there will be a new app named GPush to be released in the near future. Apple haven't approved it for some unknown reason. but i think it will meet with us sooner or later.

is Mobile ME good to use for calender work?

I'm doing the same thing.

I tried to wade through making google calenders and contacts work with my iphone and mac and finally gave up. I'm sure 10 people will tell me how easy it is and how well it works, but it gave me a headache. (not to mention that I *hate* how google creates a new contact out of everyone you email. seriously, why the hell would I want that?)

I also tried to switch my email from gmail to mobile me, but the downfall of that plan is the fact that the MM web interface is horribly slow compared to gmail. Really, really frustratingly slow. MM email works fine in mail on my mac and on my iphone, but I need the web interface to work smoothly too, and it just doesn't.

So I'm using gmail for email and mobile me for contacts and calenders. For $70 (amazon), it's well worth it to me. "Find my iphone" and remote wipe really put it over the top, and the idisk app will be nice too.

yes, but the post you quoted was from a year ago. This thread was started in 2008 and has been raised from the dead.

hey about your quote: what kind of wine do you like? I think Jesus could do white as well. Quantum physics is now showing that our consciousness (minds) has influence over subatomic particles (little waves that vibrate) and can change them. So I think Jesus knew this already and was just demonstrating what we can do in the future if we raise our consciousness to a higher level (higher vibration)

Now about the calender; I ain't forkin over 70$ just yet; think I will stick with the regular calender and wait a little while till things get better. If anyone else has any other ideas let us know.

If you don't like that behavior, you can set things up manually (as a plain IMAP account) and get more normal google behavior. Google's GMail page about setting up third party clients has an iPhone section that describes this in detail.

Yeah, I was going to suggest using Google's instructions on setting up an Exchange account for all this. I have my work calendar synching between my Macbook, my Dell laptop, and my iPhone. Using iCal on my Macbook, Mozilla Sunbird on the Dell, and the Calendar app on the iPhone. It's simply awesome and took about 10 minutes to set it all up.
