I signed up by receiving an SMS from GMAIL (of course I keyed it in on the site first). This is an alternative way of verifying you are a real person, no longer need invites.

Just in case I might have got this wrong - I log into my gMail account and it tells me in a small box at the bottom to invite a friend and that I have 100 invites left. Is that what you are all talking about? If I've got it wrong, and raised your hopes, so so sorry.

FWIW, I have been using it for over a year, never had 1 piece of spam, have occasionally been locked out (trouble at server) and use it with POP - never leaving either received or sent mails on their server.
