For those that are using any of these "exchange" workarounds for gmail in native Mail app, how do you have the setting on how many days to sync?

I like to have access to older emails from time to time. If I set it to Forever, then the folders I view downloads everything at once and takes a while. If I set it to something short like 30 days, it doesn't give me access to anything older than that at all.

The Gmail app is nice cause it'll download older emails as I scroll down and have the ability to search the entire folders without it being predownloaded. I really want to use Mail.app (without fetch) but can't figure out a setting I like.

I have mine set to forever but I have maybe 500 emails in my inbox.

Gmail push in native mail app?

Why does everyone miss google's implementation of Exchange? It sucks. I am a paid Google apps user for my personal domain and I only setup my calendar through Exchange.

Google's Mail "sync" doesn't reconcile a messages reply or forwarded status between an iPad/iPhone and the web server. It also won't star a message in Gmail if you flag it in the mail app when using Google Sync/Exchange. I find this far more irritating than the lack of push, so I just set my mail up as IMAP.

I did not read through the whole thread, but I have a business account and get push when using the gmail app. Is that the reason why?

I have a question about the Gmail app. I haven't been getting notifications when I receive email and sometimes I just get a badge notification. Everything in settings is correct for receiving banners, sounds, and badges. Anyone else having this problem? I've also uninstalled and reinstalled several times along with rebooting my phone.

EDIT: I just decided to screw the Gmail app and created an iCloud mail acct. I went to gmail's site and have all my gmail being forwarded to the new iCloud mail. Problem solved.

Yes, business accounts still get push. Like I said above, I still don't use it because the iPhone/iPad doesn't show reply/forward tags unless you did it from the phone. If you reply via the web or an IMAP client on a desktop you won't see that reflected on your phone with google's "Exchange" server.

I'm going to recommend Pushover (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pushover-notifications/id506088175?ls=1&mt=8).

It's $4.99 for life (there's a 5 day free trial). You just set your incoming emails to forward to it (you could strip the content if you're paranoid about that). I use it with a custom domain that only supports IMAP - and emails come up absolutely instantly on my phone, many seconds before they've even loaded on the Mac.

The beauty of it is that if you go into Settings you can choose "auto-open URLs" - this means that swiping the Pushover notification on the lock screen (or tapping on it from another app) takes you into the Mail app, as if the notification had come from Mail. As you're not using a hack within the Mail app, you 'read' status etc. will sync properly across devices. There's a choice of about 20 notification sounds and you can choose quiet hours with just a vibration or notification too. :)

That would be nice if the native ios app supports imap push ( imap idle).

IMAP IDLE is not a true push protocol. It's most along the lines of a low-traffic rapidly looping new mail check. I believe that once a new message is detected it also has to establish a separate connection to actually download it (whereas a real mobile push protocol like ActiveSync sends the entire content of the message in the notification.) it's not suitable for batteries on mobile devices at all. I don't know of a single first-party mail app on any mobile platform with IMAP-IDLE support. Android has some third-party apps that support it, and they do indeed kill your battery quite fast.

Actually, IMAP in general is not an efficient protocol. It's a shame there is no superior standard, and it doesn't look like we'll get one any time soon.

It's worth mentioning that there are a lot of excellent third-party mail apps that do support Gmail push. The new Outlook app (Formerly Acompli) is my favorite, but Mailbox and CloudMagic are also excellent choices. All these apps check for mail on their own servers and send push notifications for all accounts.

Gmail is about one of the last google services I use.
Everytime I read this thread about push I hate google a little more and more.

----------

I have been using it since it was released. Taking some getting used to....I am one of those who really like the stock mail app. This is the best alternative so far. I like outlook better than the Gmail app.

I hope in iOs9 we can choose the default mail app..

That would be nice, so I don't have to set up more than 1. Personally though I like the email view and the simplicity of the apple Mail app. It just really sucks I can't set it up as exchange anymore. Now I have the mail app buried in a folder and the outlook app set as my mail email. I have to keep mail app set up just for regular integrated services.

Do you have a problem with the sync-ing of the mail? Like you delete the email on your Mac mail app, but for Outlook app on your iPhone it does not automatically reflect until you logged in the app

Yes that happens but I think it is because I don't have background app refresh on. It doesn't bother me though. When I open the app emails I may have deleted appear for a couple of seconds, then refreshes. Once I got all my settings the way I like them it works pretty good. I would like VIP inbox like the stock app has.

My wife is the only person that I have as VIP and is the only one I get an audio alert for on the stock app.
