This has been happening to me since I got my 2018 13" Touchbar. Something in the software, even if its not full screen it will popup randomly, I havet to quit the Mail app for it to not happen.

Omg yes. Someone please fix this already. It’s the worst part of owning a Mac. Everything else is stellar. But it’s kinda pathetic this is still an issue. Google, Apple, whoever — PLEASE.

Ugh. I have this problem constantly. I'm working on something full screen, then suddenly Mail opens up in split screen. :(

I found a "fix" if you hide a mail client by CMND+H it won't reappear again, if you do CMND+W or close window it will appear again.

But it still annoying as you should remember all the time do CMND+H

I am a Mac User since the early 1990's. I have never seen this problem.

Well, this problem is pretty recent, and neither macOS X nor the Mail app were around in the early 1990s (except, I suppose, as NeXTMail). I assure you that this problem is very real for those of us who experience it. :)

I had actually never heard of other people having it until I read this article--I just figured it was something weird on my computer. Glad I'm not going crazy!

Go to Mail Preferences --- General --- untick "prefer opening messages in split view when in full screen" -- and the problem will be solved.
I tried that and it doesn't work. The issue remains as long as there's some kind of connection issue.

Very annoying issue indeed, noticed this during a Netflix full-screen quite some times.

Though, there are 3 other issues that seem too to be unfixed for quite a while now:
* Mail.app making a lot of data traffic to hotmail, continuously (no fix known)
* Safari flicking in Netflix full-screen when subtitles are enabled (temp. solution: switch to other browser)
* Photo's.app flickering images when scrolling (no fix known)

Omg I only started happening to me this year. I thought something was wrong with my Mac.

I have a gmail account, but it isn't my primary account and this behavior never happens to me. Perhaps make your iCloud or other account your primary account and see if the behavior changes. Then again, I don't leave my email open when I'm watching a movie, and I've never given Gmail any special control over my system in Catalina.

I rarely use full screen mode other than watching movies. Not even Facetime.

I had the same issue and fixed it by enabling 'Less secure app access' in google. Go to google.com > click on your account > 'Manage your google account' > Security > enable 'Less secure app access' and voilà

On my iPhone the Mail app opens mail to: links instead of my Gmail app, I hope this is fixed as well. Apple is rumored to be improving third party app support in iOS soon.

Why didn't he shut down all app before the test?

I don't know. If it was me I would say because I shouldn't have to. Make the web browser full screen, turn on do not disturb, and just take the test. No App should ever pull the user away from what they are doing. Notification, sure, but it shouldn't move the active window.

I dunno why i don't use app-specific password yet, in Apple mail probably because my already secure password in Gmail i deem good enough anyway. I think convience just took over :/

Ah. As far as I can remember, CMD-Q didn't make a difference. The app would launch by itself regardless. I think. Can anyone confirm this?

For me quitting Mail does “fix” the problem. But then it also means no notifications and lost window position. Very annoying.

Why didn't he shut down all app before the test?
Because even when it is closed, it actually starts the app, and sets it to share the active screen in split mode, or even better: if the app doesn’t support split mode, it kicks you out of your desktop and displays the mail app fullscreen.

It happened to me several times during presentations, its infuriating, really.

OMFG thought this was just me. I only noticed it when the public betas for Catalina started coming out and it's the reason I have not run Apple Mail for over a year now instead only ever accessing my email via Gmail as a web application. I searched for a solution for months until finally I just stopped launching mail and removed it from my dock. I dunno if I'll ever run Apple Mail again because of it.

I understand that there is a workaround using a app specific password - can I do that for macOS only or will that change the password for this account on all my other devices too?
An app specific password is simply a password that will not trigger a 2FA check, as some software cannot handle such implementations. This will exist alongside any current logins/passwords, and can be removed again at any point.

You can also have multiple app passwords, giving a different one to each new app/device.
