The Iphone X will have Gorilla glass 5 on the back, the same as the Galaxy S8. There are multiple reports of S8 uses reporting scratches on the back of their phones. Apparently Gorilla glass 5 was designed to be more shatter proof than scratch resistant. So even though you might order a new color it would be prudent to put a case on it. Besides the case will even out the camera bump.

I never use cases and never will. I take really good care of my devices and have not had any accidents happen yet. I just don't like hiding the physical features and color of the iPhone.

Better than the awful coating on the jet black. I had to sell mine and buy a mat black instead. At least the color isn't going nowhere on glass. I do wish there was some better cases for iPhones. When I had my Galaxy s7 edge I was able to buy paper thin silicone cases, that was impossible to see or feel while using on the phone. I can always feel the thickness of an iPhone case and it always sticks to the phone

no iphone screen of mine ever scratched, even without a case....

......until the iphone 7. it has alot of hairline scratches on the front screen, even though i'm not doing anything differently... not sure if i just got a crappy one, but i was not able to exchange it.

i doubt the X will be worse than this...

Considering I'm going on contract where i upgrade every 12 months i will need to use a case so i can trade it in. I always get a clear case anyway so can still enjoy the look of the device.

sell the phone on your own and make more to put down towards the new one. its what I plan on doing on a year upgrade program. Put down 400 down on the 7+ last September

Ohhhh you little poor thing... paying $1000 for a beautiful designed phone and hiding it all under $10 case.

I have literally never used any cases on my Apple products. I rather scratch and break in my own hands!
Gotto love the supreme-being ego of some who need to put down others for simply doing things another way.

A case not only protects, but brings a practical use - being able to use the phone flat on a table + being able to flip it over & not have it rest on its screen thanks to a 'lay on the table' lip.

I'll also slap on a screen protector, as I've done for every iPhone I've owned. I don't expect a pat on the back for it, just some respect by an online hero should they decide to respond (unlikely)...

Thanks OP. You are correct, my S8 is terrible and it's a secondary device that doesn't even leave the house often!

I rest it on a soft cloth and it has still scratched the glass on the front and back.

I've always used a case, and Apple's leather cases look awesome especially with some age. I've dropped my phone a couple of times over two years. Evening out the atrocious camera bump is also a big plus. I don't know about the 8, but my 6s is as slippery as an eel, I would've dropped it way more often without the case.

The phone is a tool, not some priceless work of art that must be seen in its caseless glory all the time by the world, so that one's ego can feel properly inflated.

Using a case does not make one any less of an Apple user, than someone like you who puts down others, because you like to ride your bike with no hands to impress others.

No matter how long I’m here, I’m always surprised by the pretentious dogmatism of some around here.

The absolute nerve of someone to have a different purview than you.

I am using lifeproof nuud with clear back case for my 7+ jet black and product red because I use my iPhone in the flip belt when I work out to listen music during weight lifting and watch Netflix during cardio. Not having in a case will risk my phone to get scratch especially the jet black one. I totally agree to dislike hiding physical features and color of the iphone especially the most beautiful and eye catching red phone. The clear back of the lifeproof nuud case exposes the beauty of the red and jet black.

I am going to use highest quality and trustworthy brand case with clear back for the new iPhone to show off the color.

In previous years that works but this year if it's say £1100 for the 256GB it's not a great option.

It all depends on your personal use. I have used cases to cover just the backs/sides of the iPhones without any screen protectors and they aged perfectly fine. With the latest phone (iPhone SE, silver) I decided to try going almost ceaseless, just keeping it in a separate pouch, yet one day it fell on a tiled floor in its pouch, as I was bending down to quickly tie my shoe laces, and its soft frame now has a little dent. Not a big deal, but the phone would look (and sell) better without it. I then put a Spiegen clear case on it, but it goes yellow with time, kind of turning the silver phone into a golden one. ;) So I would stick a case on any future new phone just for the sake of preserving its value.

This is actually one of my favorite pictures from the Apple coffee table book:

Looks like it had a great life, memories were made.

Same, but I’m more into the feel of the iPhone.. I’ve got a Jet Black model has been without a case ever since I bought it. But I do plan on slapping a dBrand skin on the back.

I picked up a leather dBrand for my iPP, looks slick with my Leather Smart Cover. So, that’s the look I’m going for with the so called iPhone X.... leather dBrand skin to match my iPP.

You won't necessarily get more if you try to sell the phone instead of using the IUP if you update at the 12-14 month mark. I compared the highest prices on the market to what Apple provided and they were about $100+ higher than market.

On the IUP, I don't believe condition of the phone really matters at trade in. If there is a major problem then an AppleCare+ claim is made at trade.

Compared to other phones like the Samsung phones, the outside of the iPhone isn't really that great looking. So what if I put a Spigen or Magpul case on my phone. I have a smart case on it now and love the way it looks and feels.

This is where thin clear cases come in handy. Something just sufficient enough to prevent scratches and maybe add a little grip if the phone is too smooth.

If Apple would design phones with flush cameras like they did before the 6 series there would be no need for a case to use the phone flat on a table.

Your other reason doesn't necessarily apply, at least to me.

For instance, I have no need of a case with a lip. I set my phone down on it's back, underneath something. Screen won't scratch if it's face up.

Case users have a lot of reasons to justify using cases and that's fine. It's just unfortunate that Apple's later designs sometimes justify some of those reasons.
