Also, where would be a good place to volunteer?

My personal preference is Habitat for Humanity, however, a soup kitchen or homeless shelter, or really anything that promotes some kind of social good is probably fine. Find something you enjoy and volunteer as much as you can.

Do they take people under 18?

Most soup kitchens and homeless shelters will accept volunteers under 18 as far as habitat for humanity goes it depends on state and federal laws concerning work safety in the construction field--you could probably get a position cleaning up though.

I used to volunteer a little bit when my pop was a truck driver for salvation army during my Summers while in high school and more recently having had to do some court ordered community service (a story for another time) I worked in a soup kitchen to pay off some debt along side many a high schooler.

You will likely be closely supervised either way.

Most soup kitchens, etc. probably will. I can't speak for Canada, but in California Habitat for Humanity does take volunteers under 18. You do have to have your parents sign the liability waiver, however, since you're not an adult.
