since you're a macrumors "newbie" I'll let you in on something, people post their devices in their sigs and generally when a new product comes out they post the date they got it...

thanks for trying though!

I guess my point is shouldn't matter what your "status" is because if you lack common sense no one will ever take your opinion seriously.

N00b does not have to equal stupid. And the other way 'round.

Reception issues aside, *nothing* on your phone should rattle. Take it in for that, but don't worry about reception for now. A fix is probably on the way.

And yeah, I too am glad I'm waiting for white-- if I get one at all at this point-- because I get to avoid all these launch bugs. I might very well wait for iPhone 5 though.

So I went to get my bumper on Saturday, something I was going to do anyway, regardless of the reception issue...I was just hoping to wait for the white one...

Anyway, so just to mess with the sales guy, I asked for a bumper because I could not make phone calls. He told me that they were not able to reproduce the issue in the store and wanted me to reproduce. I then just took my finger to bridge the gap between the two antennas. He then told me that, I should not hold it that way. I then showed him how I hold my phone, which also causes the issue. He told me how he held the phone.

I then asked him if Apple was going to have a iPhone class at the store about how to hold the phone. I think he thought I was an idiot, but he was being way too dismissive.

So I was cashing out and he was trying to use his portable payment system. He crashed. I told him that he must be holding the handheld incorrectly :)

I finished my purchase and walked out with my hand written receipt and all...their systems crashed.

What was he suppose to do, give you a free bumper and get yelled at by his boss? Maybe I just wasn't cut out for the retail world...

Ignoring the flamefest here, the rattle is most likely the rumble motor. I can hear it when shaking, it's definitely at the top of the device, and sounds like it's coming from the top left (when viewing it from the front), which is right where the motor is according to the iFixit teardown. Plus, it only rattles when the phone is shaken horizontally, which suggests it's the offset weight moving back and forth.

I'm guessing the old iPhones put some resistance on the cylinder so it doesn't move when power is not applied, but that becomes less efficient the smaller the motor becomes. I've also seen this with some other devices with rumble motors. And considering I have to really shake it to hear it, I don't consider it an issue.

I started a thread about the rattle (I think it was over at tipb forum) and everyone said they didn't hear it. I was very specific on how to recreate the rattle (tap with finger on the back at each corner. At the camera corner I hear a rattle). I called apple about it and they set up a genius appointment. While on the phone they asked for my serial # so I put it on speaker and she couldn't hear me. Turns out my mic during speaker calls wasn't working (even after reset). At the genius appointment I looked at the demo phone to see if I heard a rattle. All of them do this. I got my phone replaced because of the mic issue and my new phone rattles exactly the same.

As for the reception. What would you like them to do at your genius appointment? If you want a new phone that doesn't have a reception issues, that's not going to happen because this is an issue with all phones at certain cell tower locations. If you would like to return your phone, I'm sure they would gladly refund your purchase.

Oh yeah, you're right, it's the right (back camera) side, not the left (headphone) side. In that case I'd have to guess it's the power button housing then, maybe the area between the power button and the contact pad (hard to see from the iFixit photos). Either way, I don't consider it to be a problem.

so, if anyone actually cares about the rattle thing, it wasn't normal. There is a difference between the "normal rattle" and what mine was doing. he said it sounded like there was a screw loose. he swapped my phone out. i didnt bring up the reception issue as apple just ****ed up on this phone completely.

but ya my rattle wasn't normal

Sucks to hear, sorry. Of course it's too late for your issue, but I did figure out how to test for it. If you hold down the power button while shaking/tapping the phone and it rattles once or twice and then stops, that's "normal". It seems there's a small space between the power button and the actual switch assembly when the button isn't depressed. Apple could probably solve this by attaching a small rubber shim to the underside of the button.
