Thanks for all the advice.

If I weren't to buy a new lens, and just go with the kit lens, would the shots still be pretty great?

If I did this, what filter(s) should I get (I'm already going to order a CPF)...

You guys have really helped me out!

you have to try really, really, really hard to not take a good shot in Hawaii. What you have will definitely work. i basically split half my shooting between my 18-200 3.5-5.6 and my 50 1.8. the 50 1.8 really came in handy when i went to the old lahaina lua. we had front row seats, and i didn't need the flash at all.

i do recommend, however, going to mt haleakala before noon and be sure to stop on the way up and down if you plan to go. I went later than noon and the trade winds were starting to blow over the caldera, had we waited longer i'd have gotten few shots. used my 18-200 that whole adventure.

You made me want to go there that much more lol.

I think the lens and polarizer advice has been spot on, but nobody (I think) has mentioned one other thing - a lightweight (but strong) tripod for low light or long exposure shots (waterfalls are AWESOME to see in a 1/2 to 1 sec exposure) and Hawaii is LOADED with great waterfall opportunities...

My $0.02

I totally agree, and mentioned it in my earlier post:
...combine either of these with a tripod for long exposures, and you would have a great setup for capturing waterfalls and the surrounding foliage.

And if you like Hawaiian food, definitely go to Aloha Mixed Plate on Front Street. It's a low-key place with plastic tables and chairs and food served on paper plates, but their plate lunch is great. Oh, and get some shave ice.

Ooooh, now I'm dreaming of lau lau, kalua pork, lomi lomi salmon, haupia...

Man, I love Hawaii.

where in maui are you staying? Take a in a round of golf if you play.. awesomeness

agree with Jason. got mine for $90 from Adorama a few months back, but it now listing it at $125. Look around and try to get one for under a 100-it's worth it.

Yah, and you may get it cheaper on other sites like NewEgg. Shoot for around 80-90 bucks! : ))) It's a great little gem.

I scored it for $80 shipped from Staples. If you want to know how, PM me. It's kind of a loophole.

Right on@! Good. Its not the best constructed lens, but it still is 50mm of goodness. The bokeh isn't too bad either off them, albeit a little polygonal. I ENVY you doing some depth of field shots on that island. Do torches, at 1.8-2.0 (just dial in the iso accordingly), I gotta see this :D I'd have a lot of fun there. I have pics from Ensenada on my Facebook page in my sig. Hawaii is one of my next destinations.

What do you mean by depth of field shots? I understand the depth of field, but in what sort of depth of field shots do you mean?

And when you say torches, do you mean the tiki torches? You like those?

Don't forget a rain cover so you won't be worried at waterfalls and during quick showers. Personally, I like the Fotosharp ones.
