I doubt they'll be running out of devices "shortly after 8am". It's obvious that Apple had a TON of the things in the first shipment, because the preorders for the first day lasted far longer than anyone expected. And check out eBay - actual auctions with bids are going for maybe $30 more than the retail price at most. Buying extra devices to decrease the supply and increase the demand just isn't working this time.

Are you serious? The 64GB 4Gs are selling for $1,400-$2,000 on ebay as we speak. This time next week prices are going to be through the roof.
No they aren't, people are setting those prices in their auctions and nobody is paying them. Look at real auctions with bids to see the real rates people are paying.

TLDR

there's morals, and then there's opportunity. go for it, if you can wait until these become more available to buy yours

It's funny how morals and ethics are brought up in this thread. I think the idea is perfectly fine. It's as if people think this is price gouging. If people want to pay a premium for a product, than that's because they perceive it to have value. If someone where to buy it, it would be because the benefit of having to not wait exceeds the extra cost, and the person providing that value should be rewarded.

Is it immoral for Apple to turn raw materials into products that people value while being rewarded for it?

There is nothing wrong with trying to resell your new iPad. However, as has already been stated, it could create problems with mall security. (You don't want this guy coming after you;) )

Personally, I'd rather order online and wait than pay the extra $150.

The same 300 lbs security guard who breathes through his mouth while walking up and down the escalators?

The demand won't start until after (if) the stores all run out. I do think there are a lot more out there this time.

Agreed. I was talking to a unusually forthcoming Apple employee at lunch today. I said I thought the launch would go smooth because of all the pre-orders. He laughed and said the amount of iPads that were available for pre-sale was a "fraction" of what will be in the stores tomorrow.

Because an Apple employee is privaleged with this information.....

The main reason is most malls prohibit doing that (solicitation of customers) or there would be people running all over the place trying to sell all kinds of stuff. You could be thrown out. It's private property and they have the right to toss you and they will especially if it's such a high end mall.
This is absolutely true. You could get arrested if the cops think you're selling stolen goods. You'll straighten it out at the police station after they fingerprint you!

I was at an Apple store this evening to pick up an iPhone case and there was hardly anybody there. Especially for a typical day in the Apple store. I asked to guy helping me was it the calm before the storm and he kind of agreed.

Who knows, it might not be as crazy as we think. I'm sure they will all sell out eventually, but pre order might have really changed things this year. And maybe not as many people are upgrading as we here on MacForums think. Apple sold 15 million ipad last quarter. All those people aren't going to dump their ipads this quick.

No one knows for sure. More than likely there will be a steady flow of ipads coming to stores atleast several times a week. This keeps ipad prices down.

People aren't complaining just because of the price. They are complaining because of people buying extra iPads so that other people won't be able to get them, so those people will have to pay more or wait. If this person didn't buy an extra iPad just to resell, that's one more person who could have gotten one on launch day.

It's similar to what happens with concert tickets these days - it's pretty much impossible to buy one for retail price, because the scalpers all rush to buy the max they can the moment tickets go on sale, so they sell out within 2 minutes, all to scalpers, who then crank up the price tenfold.

while we are on the topic of morality, is it immoral for someone to wish OP gets mugged doing this?

Perth store was pretty quiet and boring really. I wonder if it'll be the same around the world - it would certainly keep resale price down.

don't call him immoral. He's not forcing anyone to buy it

It's called supply and demand people

if you want to,go ahead. No one's stopping you.
