I can see all the post down the road about how people got scammed buying a second hand gold plated watch as a real gold watch. Maybe not here on MacRumors, but definitely national news.

haha lol. I wonder how many people will now try to spraypaint their apple watch, ******* it up, and then run to the apple store to get a replacement.

I'm waiting for the transparent aluminum. Plating that would be useless.

The Sport's display is transparent aluminum :)

Weird thing is at first I wondered how the hell he got it disassembled to electroplate it. Then I realized its waterproof (basically), so I guess the inside would still be SS.

Which makes the price ridiculous, all you do is give it a bath for 10min, or brush it on. I could get it gold plated for $40 from the used car detail guy...

Beyond the obvious fact that spray painting your Apple Watch probably isn't the wisest idea, given that the paint could easily chip or get stuck in the Digital Crown or other parts of the watch, the end result actually looks much like the Apple Watch Edition.

Except that the end result looks nothing like the Edition other than a gold hue.

I'll wait a few editions, is it a stretch to assume that Apple will eventually do a champagne "gold" Sport version? I mean, my iPad, MacBook, and iPhone 6+ all match, my AppleWatch should be able to as well for under 10K.

For those who want to look like a moron for spending $10K on a watch when you obviously can't afford it.

Funny things is, guys who spend $10k on an Apple Watch would not give a rats ass about your existence, never mind what you think about them. They can afford to throw money on whatever the f they want. All you can do is hate them.

Humpf, child's play. Wait for the replica watch people to make a gold model. It won't actually work, or maybe just tell time, but you can look rich from a distance and will be far cheaper.

I once toured the home of an elderly woman who was a famous artist. She had a beautiful modern wood desk that she made in the 1970's. In the 80's she purchased a PC and cut into the desk to create a seamless workspace for her to type. She admitted to me that it was a mistake and regretted cutting the desk. I think about this all the time. Successful people probably understand buyer's remorse better than unsuccessful people. Anyone buying the Apple Watch Edition is either incredibly rich, or incredibly foolish. I wouldn't want to be identified as either one.

These services will not change the writing on the back of the watches and so for someone who is buying a golden watch he should inspect and hopefully read which watch is he going to buy.

Hopefully

You'd probably brush-plate it, instead of dunking it.

Maybe, if he knows how to plate stainless steel, which is probably outside his realm of experience. E.g. he'd have to first use something like Wood's nickel strike to prepare the surface, otherwise the gold won't plate.

Plus there are hundreds of millions of people around the world who simply prefer gold color jewelry.

It seems like a rather huge marketing omission to not offer an affordable gold color option, especially for something sold in part as a fashion item.

So those who think a champagne gold color is next, are probably right.

Great idea for those who can't afford gold

For those of us who cannot afford the real gold Apple Watch Edition, gold plating your Apple watch is a fantastic idea.

Maybe my Jeweler can do it himself.

Hmmm... I have a sputter coater at work with a gold–palladium target, for electron microscopy sample prep. I wonder how long I'd have to leave the watch in there to get a multi-micron coating. :D

I can't wait for the inevitable Chinese hackers that take this a step further and make cheap Android-based knock-offs that look exactly like a gold Apple Watch Edition. After all, if it is a status symbol that Apple is looking to sell, then it doesn't have to perform like an Apple Watch, it just has to look like one, something that enterprising Chinese companies can very easily do. This is probably another reason why the Apple Watch will almost certainly fail in the long term.

The $6 was a very unfortunate typo! i was trying to type $60. In reality the gold varies from $30 to $65 depending on the watch and band.
