How do we check if 8.1 is still being signed? Is there like a site that says so or is the only way to find out is to shift restore and see if it accepts 8.1 still?

Yea that website does but it didn't work for him. Maybe they aren't updated in real time.

What happens when you try to restore and it isn't being signed anymore? Does it just give you an error before updating or does it start to update, error out, and then force you to update to 8.1.1?

Chances are your friend did something wrong. When apple stops signing developers usually announce it.

simplest way to see if it's being signed is by twitter if you have one, follow tss signing status, or if no twitter, go to the shsh iphone wiki

dfu mode is not necessary unless you are having issues booting. What are you trying to do?

download the correct 8.1. ripsaw files FOR YOUR DEVICE, shift (alt on a mac) + click restore and select the ipsw

I always use dfu to restore from a jailbreak. Just seems more, I dunno, secure?
