Wow those look way better than mine. I think I'll wait a couple weeks to return mine to BB and hope there's a better batch in stock.
Could you possibly post pictures for comparison? Thanks.
Just look at any of the other bad photos. The blacks on mine are just as bad. Dark videos and photos are pretty much unwatchable/unviewable.
wow Thanks buddy you made my day
I think most of the Touches that came out before the official release on Sep 28th were not yet ready for sale. Perhaps Apple sent those to the major stores as display models. But the stores would have started selling them right away to cash in on the huge demand. Normally stocks should arrive in several tens or hundreds, but most buyers reported that stores had just a few units, which suggests such a scenario.
Whatever its is, this screen issue has happened for the good, I believe (no offense meant to the victims). Now Apple is aware of such a problem and they will ensure that the units launched officially are up to the standards.
That's all pure speculation. You think that Apple sent 20-30 units to each of their stores for dispaly? These units are for sale. Additionally people have gotten units from Best Buy with the same serial number prefixes as what you can get from the Apple store so I think that theory is pretty hard to believe.
As for those with 'good' screens, in the photos I've seen, black still looks messed up like the contrast is cranked up way too high or something. Look at the video the guy made of his iphone and ipod touch side by side playing the same episode of 'House M.D.'. On the iPod it is all dark and over contrasted, on the iPhone it looks like a good quality LCD TV with great contrast and lots of fine detail.
We don't even know if Apple is aware of the problem yet other than a few reports trickling in, remember, these units only went on sale on Thursday and now it's the weekend. Engadget has promised to 'follow up' on the iPod touch screen issue so we'll see what they come out with next week.
The right thing for Apple to do is either say;
1. This is as good as it gets for this screen, this screen is not as good as the one on the iPhone.
2. We will fix the problem and do a no hassle exchange to anyone with an affected Touch with Serial numbers xxxxxblahxxxx
Anything other than this, i.e., ignoring the issue is probably going to result in a LOT of returns and a LOT of bad press, at least on tech blogs.
Honestly guys if the problem bothers you then you SHOULD bring the units back. Nothing is going to get Apple's attention more than stacks and stacks of returned units.
That's the kind of thing that gets the telephones ringing at corporate headquarters.
If someone is truly not bothered with the quality of their screen then by all means they should keep it...
I am the one behind those test images - the images such as this one with fine patterns are not meaningful if they are scaled to the resolution of the Touch screen. I have added a new test pattern on www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ that is more suitable for the iPod Touch resolution. Don't forget to refresh the page in your browser.Here are some screen test pictures that I have taken of my touch.
