I was keeping the 8+ as a backup phone after I bought the 15 Pro Max. To me, the 8+ was the best of the old school iPhones. By that, I mean the old form factor with a home button, TouchID, big bezels, and no notch or hole punches with marketing names like dynamic island. It was a very good and reliable phone. The A11 was blazing fast. TouchID 2 was also fast. The home button was magic thanks to the haptic motor. Today, I say goodbye to a trusty old friend as I send it back for a little store credit to help pay for a new MacBook Pro.
If I sound a little sentimental, it's because I am. My very first iPhone was the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 8+ is the last iPhone that looks anything like the iPhone 4. It's also the last iPhone that looked like the very first iPhone, which was proudly presented by Steve Jobs. While I am enjoying my 15 Pro Max, it seems like turning in my 8+ is like closing a chapter both in my personal life and in Apple history. However, I am not going to let sentiment stop me from doing the practical thing, which is to send my 8+ to Apple while I can still get some store credit for it.
I don't always get this attached to devices. In fact, most of the time I have no problem giving away or selling an old device. The last time I had trouble letting go of an Apple device was my 2011 iMac. It gave me almost 12 years of solid service.
