I used Notability for years in school and also used Goodnotes 5 for years…but I think I prefer CollaNote! It used to be 100% free but costs some now.

Not affiliated in anyway with them, just a happy user. 👍🏻

Has anyone used the Mac version of GoodNotes 6? Is the sidebar still useless, or can I finally drag folders there?

I always use Notability and have since 2017. I was grandfathered in so don't have to pay for the new subscription based service. I have never used Good Notes but it looks like a nice app. Notability has recently added a ton of new features, UI changes, etc that makes it hard to believe I still receiving all the new upgrades.

After my initial excitement, I find that creating a separate Goodnotes account is required…. I don’t want and can’t see why I’d need one. I’m looking for a product, not a service and certainly not a relationship.
This is the biggest turn off for me. Why do I have to log into my Apple ID to use this app?!

I am a huge fan of Notability and prefer it more than GoodNotes. The latest updates are great :D I'm glad they got some competition from GoodNotes - us customers benefit.

Yeah, you'll actually need two accounts-- your Apple ID to sync to iCloud and a Goodnotes account of unknown utility. I don't see the point other than to try to create a customer relationship that I consider done after the financial transaction is complete.

It looks like the AI tools only work with typed text. No handwritten text support. Also no actual content support, meaning the AI can’t be applied to the text of the actual document. We don’t know which language model it connects to. As far as I know ChatGPT continues to be the best model for pure text. So I wonder if it’s not the best to just prompt ChatGPT to get the highest quality results and paste them into GoodNotes. Particularly if you will copy & paste text off a document you are working on. Apart from the AI integration, the update seems cosmetic. I like the way handwritten, typed and spoked annotations are accessed.

I may be wrong, but I think one of their latest YouTube videos stated the AI for handwritten notes is coming later this year. You may want to factcheck me on that though.

Worst marketers ever. I tried to figure out if I use Good Notes but because it is in my toolbar, there is no name. When you pull up the app, it has no name. When you open various options, there is no name. Took me a couple minutes.🙄

In the near future, schools are going to have to make the hard decision whether or not to go back to mostly pen/pencil and paper, or give up altogether. Because AI is going to make it impossible for teachers to distinguish between cheating and legit work, and if you just turn your head and pretend the problem doesn't exist, you're going to have a huge swath of uneducated, untalented people with degrees, flooding the professional ranks... and that's not good for anyone aside from those who cheated (and even they will suffer in the end).

It's like the calculator problem of old. That's why schools mandate specific calculator brands. I think my HP Prime has LEDs on it that give a visible indication that it's in "exam mode" and has certain functionality disabled. (Which, as someone who hopes to never take another exam in their life, I find quite annoying to even have to have included).

They'll lock down the school iPads and ensure only specific software is runnable.

Which, now that I think of it, might benefit from an iOS exam mode, similar to some of the Screen Time restrictions.

From GoodNotes site

For one-time purchase: You will receive a discount from the one-time purchase, based on when you purchased GoodNotes 5, which is based on the discount you'd receive from the yearly subscription (listed above). For example:

  • For those who bought GoodNotes 5 from July 1 to Aug 8, 2023, there's a 33% discount from the one-time purchase.
  • For those who bought GoodNotes 5 from Jan 1 to June 30, 2023 (first half of this year), there's a 16.6% discount from the one-time purchase.
  • For those who bought GoodNotes 5 anytime before 2023, there's a 8% discount from the one-time purchase.

I purchased it as a response to the competition going subscription based. I think I’ll look into the discounted one time purchase for GoodNotes 5 users.
Same. I was happily using Notability until they switched to subscription.
By the time they backpedaled I had realized that GoodNotes had a couple of features I liked and that Notability didn’t have, so I stuck with GoodNotes.

$30 for an App which does what Notes should do

Am I the only one who sees the problem here?
Have you tried the built-in apps in Windows?

Sorry to be cynical about it, but I consider plenty of people with degrees both younger and older than me to be in that category. Nothing to do with AI but with mentality. People who have a genuine interest and drive are very rare. I'm lucky to be working in an organisation filled with such people. My previous job was in a company where rank-and-file managed rank-and-file whose main goal for the day was to get out in the evening.

It's like the calculator problem of old.
Plenty of educational institutes have, fortunately, come to accept that it's better to teach how to work using the new tools, than to try and fight them. It will remain an ongoing struggle, though, as technology evolves faster now and education needs to try and keep up.

About trying to keep up - perfectly happy with my GN5 here. My handwriting is complete crap and I don't expect any form of intelligence aside from myself to figure it out. I have thousands of pages written that I hardly consult afterwards - it's a way for me to remember things better. But in case I need it, I can go back a few pages and check notes. What I really like about GN is that it's page based, just like a paper notebook. It's why I picked it instead of free canvas note taking programs.
