You mean like iTunes, Safari (in the past), and quicktime were Apple only? Safari used to be available on Windows and iTunes still is. They do let other platforms use their software when it benefits them. So I think it is incorrect to say they only lock to their platform. They do open it when it makes sense to do so.

Indeed yes, Run the utterly horrid virus of a program iTunes on you PC so we can sell you something.

So sweet of them.

I knew a few people personally, including myself that were forced to install that simply to make the stupid iPad actually usable.

Let me get this straight. iTunes is the virus on Windows? :)

I think these Silicon Valley guys just party with each other and say "Hey, I like you and you've got a cool start-up. How would you like to be a billionaire?" And that's about it. That's the only way the amounts of money being thrown around make any sense. It's just the techie elite using shareholder money to make each other rich beyond their wildest dreams for no apparent reason.

"Will Nest customer data be shared with Google?

"Our privacy policy clearly limits the use of customer information to providing and improving Nest's products and services. We've always taken privacy seriously and this will not change."

Another non-answer. Taking privacy seriously does not mean they will not share data with Google. A simple "No" would have meant so much more.

If Fadell was so important Jobs would never have let him leave Apple would he? He could have offered Fadell hardware engineering for iPhone/iPod. Instead he hired Mark Papermaster.
Jobs never made mistakes ? Cook seems to be one of them...
Concerning Papermaster, he left Apple only after 2 years...

Do you understand that is why Google's products are free? Google needs you to use them so it can sells ads against your information.

I'm not sure why two different business models upset you so greatly.

Tinfoil Hat Rumors
Reading through all these comments (whether they're jokes or not) makes me weep for those of you who don't have a life beyond "Apple."

Clearly on Planet Larry Page. Nest Labs w/o it's staff isn't worth $3B either. And what Nest is doing isn't all that different from what other tech companies are doing, so hard to say exactly why Google paid $3B, but the only unique part of the deal is Tony Fadell, like it or not. The biggest thing Google lacks is product design finesse. Hard to argue Fadell doesn't add that to the Google's game plan. Or maybe Google is just trying to thumb its nose at Apple by picking up the Podfather -- not that Apple cares, I'm sure.

I guess I'm skeptical that Fadell is worth $3B. If re/code reporting is to be believed, Google was the only company seriously looking at Nest. But if it's more about product design than specific technology/IP then I can see why Apple wasn't interested. I doubt they'd have trouble building a sleek looking thermostat if they wanted to.

wow, I sure am glad I never bought into anything from Nest yet. I had planned to, but now I would need to create a Google+ account to change the temperature in my house.
That would honestly be my only real concern I suppose.
Wow you guys need to loosen your tin foil hats as they are obviously cutting off blood flow to your brains.
Just a bit but I did wonder myself what would happen. Google seems to push G+ now, even though I only GMail. It has recently asked me to update my G+ profile but I didn't have one. It would be nice to know that Google isn't planning on doing anything with the data but then again, I wonder if I actually care.

Your location is funny to me. Not to sound vain, but that is my old user name. ;)

Why would I hang an Apple TV on my ceiling?

Wait....on second thought couldn't that NEST smoke detector and aTV be combined if these guys co-operate. Both look the same already.

And, what a conversation piece. Who has a smoke detector that can stream
stuff.

That seems like a perfect fit. What could go wrong. Google seems nice...

It kinda bugged me, in the beginning, thinking that my thermostat knows when I'm home... Hmm... The next update includes an actual camera?:eek:

I'm actually surprised that Apple didn't make a play for Nest. Perchance there be some 'bad blood'?

According to some here, yes. Obviously Papermaster wasn't a good fit for Apple, but there must have been a reason Jobs didn't think Fadell was the guy to lead iPhone engineering. No way Fadell would have turned down that job had it been offered to him.

Not wishing to sound naive, but where is the documentation that Google will require a Google+ account for Nest products?

Has there been some announcement that Nest owners will no longer be able to use the extant app? Or is this just an assumption (read: blind guess and/or assertion), based on...ah...very little for this particular device?

time will tell, meanwhile Google is accumulating more and more talented people specialized in different domains... :(

Don't worry, Google would never cross the creepy line..

The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.

Well, in as much as its software running on people's computers who don't want it there, they can't realistically get rid of it, and it's trying hard to sell you things.
