So much being made over a feature that is so seldom used. It's great for the minority of iOS users that find it useful, but I think most iOS users are discovering that Apple's maps app is pretty darn good... or at least, nowhere near as bad as the press makes it out to be. Heck, even Google maps wouldn't stand up to the level of scrutiny that Apple maps is getting... I can point to a bunch of errors in Google maps too, along with some really bad routes offered in my area, but it doesn't make it a terrible product.

So, that also meant you must of had problems using IOS5's Google Maps app since its the same data as the web-based version..

4 misnamed roads within 3 blocks of my house and two streets missing entirely in town. But, you know...besides that, it's not too terrible. I mean I already knew the names of those roads anyway, and I rarely ever go down those missing streets. It's not like I need a map around here. I mean comeon. I live here.

Seriously people. It's not as bad as it's made out to be. Shut up and quit hating.

Apple Maps only requires a data connection when it routes your directions. After that it does NOT require a data connection. I tested this out myself by using it through an area where I get absolutely no signal. Apple Maps carried on with turn by trun with no problem.

Yeah, and it magically stores the map of the entire world down to the smallest alleys in your 16GB iPhone? Do you think it's possible? Although the data of Apple Maps is crap at this moment, the size is still enormous.

----------

Why doesn't Apple allow customers to choose the default app that they prefer? The lack of choice in iOS is one thing I really hate about it. I find the user experience to be inferior given the lack of customization.

You just lack the choice to choose Google. If the only choice is Google you won't complain. You're not complaining about the choice. You are complaining the inferiority of the current dictated choice given to you by Apple. But if the dictated choice is Google you'll be just fine. :D

----------

Boys and girls...this is how competition benefits consumers.

1) Apple is rushing to improve their iOS Maps app

2) Google is rushing to improve their web-based Google Maps site

Both actions benefit the consumer. While it was a negative that the native Google Maps app was removed (don't change/fix something unless broken), in the long run having Apple vs Google battle it out will be better for the consumer.
Agreed. And the Fandroids always make Apple improve. :D

Apple maps is a fail in Singapore. Pretty much everything is wrong and the satellite view is a giant cloud.

Google maps rocks. It's never failed me and I rely on it everyday. Think I'm dumping my apple for Samsung next month when my contract is up. I'm really not impressed with the slow dev cycle and Apples approach to their user base.

I agree competition is good. But google are way ahead in the map technology. Have you seen the new underwater photography the have added. It's Awsome. Great for planning vacations, especially if you like diving or beach locations.

Google Maps is great. Nobody is going to disagree. But choosing a smartphone platform is another story. But anyway, it's your choice.

Yeah, the NORTH Koreans have been really happy. Although apple doesn't even sell producs there, the handful of people who have iOS devices have been very happy. :D

The Almighty Great Dear Leader Kim is happy to see that all of his military secrets are hidden under clouds in the Apple Satellite images :)

As annoying has the web app is.. it's the best alternative to Apple Maps, which is a total disappointment.

Instead of flying over cities they should've spent time fixing maps

Neither the data nor the users are products. Google does not sell you or your data to anyone. Google merely uses your data to show you relevant advertisements which in turn bring profit to Google (Google does not tell the advertiser that John Smith from Arizona likes motorbikes, they merely show you relevant ads based on your activity). The advertisements are the products here.

That is some quality doublespeak!

"It's not like I need a map around here. I mean comeon. I live here." That's a smart remark. Please post another comment once you have used the new Maps application in a town where you NOT live and where you actually NEEDED the software to get to a place that you don't know - in other words, when you use the software in a real world scenario.

The extreme sarcasm eludes you.

Then again, I might've laid it on so thick, I ended up doing a complete 180 and looked completely sincere. So I can't totally blame you for not catching it. Just partially blame.

Street View Who Cares!

I don't miss Google Maps! And I hated when I accidentally clicked on Street View! Gimmick that Flyover will soon replace once it works out the bugs!

Google version 10? vs Apple Maps version 1

I hope someday someone makes a much better Street View without all the blurry/unreadable signs, lens flares, awkward movement, and tangled intersection lines. (Flyover might approach that in some cases, but it lacks street-level fine detail.)
It will be easier and much quicker for Flyover to add in these details, than for Google to send out a car and retake a picture of it!

In time Apple's vector framework will beat Googles much slower image loading solution!

I'd love to hear a prettied-up apologist thesis like this for how their meticulously-logged wifi sniffing is benign. :D

I want to like Google. Really I do. I evangelized them for years when they were first starting out. It's just hard to ignore my gut instinct that they think they're above the law these days. Call me crazy, but I don't see how people who act so cavalier about getting intro trouble are worth such heartfelt defense.

By the way, I wasn't being sarcastic. I'd honestly love to know how the wi-fi sniffing, driving fleets of robot cars around without permission, etc etc, are signs of people who value the rights and safety of others.

If I were to take a guess, and it's just a guess because I don't know anywhere near enough about the situation to really make a call on it pro or con, I'd say Google was probably using it to get a map of wifi access hotspots to use while they were out taking SV shots.

It would be different if the app was different to the mobile version, but its not in anyway.

So, its just a convenience factor, since their are alternatives Apple says.... Google web based is the same as the app pulls in.. Its not like there are differences between the data, is there ? There that would be a valid reason to complain

Or is it just a "convince" factor of it "being on the Home screen as an app"?

Yeah? So are libraries. What's so scary about a company that compiles data and makes it easy for everyone to search through and utilize?

You're seriously comparing the intent of a corporation to that of a public library? Seriously???

Wow. Google is not only the master of search, they're also the master of propaganda.

Yes, Google loves you. They exist only to serve you. Wrap yourself in their nice, cozy blanket. Everything's going to be just fine.

Yeah, cuz that's exactly what I said.

Google's job is data. It's what they collect, and what they provide. I never said they were good or evil about it. That thought never even entered into the equation for me. I was simply stating a fact.

They make it easier to find out things about things on the internet. Much like a library, they collect data and store it in a convenient location.

Newspapers, books, magazines, radio stations, over the air TV stations all have one thing in common. No method of tracking your every move, every use of device, in realtime. Then send this data to who ever contracts for it. Your right in it is not good or evil but it is a huge shift in one generation to keeps tabs on a large crop ripe for harvest.
