Apple are doing a great PR job of distracting from the FaceTime privacy breach. Almost forgot it ever happened.

But try telling FaceBook or Google that they just lost access to the entire iOS market. Maybe they will call Apples bluff but is it worth the risk to get a temp ban vs collecting a little more info? If Apple really wants to spend its PR and ad dollars wisely they need to get people to understand fundamentally why what these companies are doing is wrong and what they are doing to protect them. I work at a university and I talk to freshmen and they have no expectation of privacy. They were born into a world with their parents posting them to the internet at a young age and they just expect that the internet knows them as well as their mom or best friend because it has always existed to collect data about them. It’s normal. They don’t understand why that is weird or the problems that can arise from this. It’s truly sad and disheartening because they have no freaking idea and just accept it.

I doubt anyone will care about privacy. That being said, I do agree that both companies would suffer if Apple did it. But Apple is already hitting the "phone sales are going down" media story.

The parents consented.

Allegedly.

Honestly, the NSA isn't interested in tracking kids.

What interest do they have in knowing that Pokemon Go is waning in popularity, and that kids prefer grape-flavored e-cigs?

Let’s look at facts. First, FaceBook claims teens were about 5% of the participants, so you are arguing about the least represented. Second, regardless of age, the NSA is building a social database akin to China’s social scoring database. Third, the NSA is likely most interested in tracking potential terrorists or miscreants, especially in case of a national emergency.

What the NSA does with the general database ... use your imagination. Positively, they may use it to recruit future employees. Many government jobs—including contractors—require security clearance. Negatively, the government may mark a selection of the citizenry to be a national security concern based on beliefs.
