Don’t read too much in to the lag. Have you heard about how much of a dog the original iPhone was, even up to the point of the keynote in which it was released. Steve Jobs covered its failings really well. So well you didn’t notice them.

Nope... Because it wasn't... I used it for 3 years...

Nope... Because it wasn't... I used it for 3 years...

I think you misunderstood that statement. What he meant was the iPhone used in the keynote (when it was announced in 2007) was extremely buggy. Of course the operating system was totally new and very alpha. Anyway Apple had come up with a sequence of actions that they were pretty sure wouldn't make it crash, but not 100% sure. The entire iPhone team was on the edge of their seat.

By the time the phone shipped all those bugs were fixed so that you were able to use it for 3 years without problems. But the phone in the keynote was completely different device.

What I see is an OEM or dealership option to swap out CarPlay or this Android knock off by reprogramming the center stack entertainment option as needed.

My guess is you will see a trend of Android Auto in the lower end units, less trendy unuts while CarPlay is in the trendy and higher end units. Thus, it will follow the consumer trend of smartphone. Cheap users that do not buy aftermarket will go Andriod while people with money goes CarPlay.

Haha, oh goodness gracious. Thank you for that laugh. My my the ignorance, buhahahahahahahahahahahahhHHHH

I do like the thought of them installing both systems. I havent read anything about this though. Source?

Ahhhh ok... My bad...

But, them the iPhone was the first of its kind then... I think in the last 8 years the technology has really polished itself...

Bit then again even this is just a beta... So it's ok I guess...

Fanboy? You've been praising the all mighty Goog (hallelujah) and have countless posts in this thread trying to convince others of why your opinion is better. Take your religion elsewhere bud.

It's funny how such people keep mentioning apple fanboyism on an apple rumor site and are totally blind to the google fanboyism... Not that either is good, but, talk about hypocrisy... There is another google fanboy too on this thread with a comment saying stuff about the apple fanboyism on this thread... Lol...

There are three types of Android demographics out there:
1) Enterprise who want to get everyone in their company smartphones the cheapest way possible.
2) Low end consumers who only pay their cell phone bill and expect every app free.
3) Mix of lunatic fringe hackers / Apple haters that buy the most expensive Android hardware out there to root and place in their own kernel builds including man-in-the-middle stealth hotspots at coffee houses.

All three of these groups suck at after-market / third party app purchases.

Show me stats that Android app and aftermarket exceeds that of Apple, I'll switch in a minute.

Dude, one does not have to exceed the other. That proves nothing. All walks of life own Android, Windows, BlackBerry, Apple etc. This smug, elitist attitude you project is laughable. It doesn't work like that in the real world.

Some Apple fans are so full of themselves!

You forgot to mention the Android customer that purchases an Android device because it meets their needs better then an Apple device - IE, more features, more open etc

Anyone can create a ridiculous chart such as yours - Lets give it a go!

The two Apple demographics.
1) People to stupid to use a smartphone and want something very simple to use.
2) People that pay over the odds for a phone so it gives them a feeling of being part of an elite group, even though thats not the case.

I don't get it… I'll see tons of poster's here on this site and others who talk about their hate for advertising and being tracked by big brother, yet at the same time will praise Google technology which is all designed to track you and serve you up advertising.

Not that Apple does not do it too, but Google is by far the leader in this sort of practice so they can pay for all the "free" software and services.

Both are people with money.

Dude, and like where is the money? You can follow your passion all the way to coding while on food-stamps (Linux anyone?) or go with a user base that has the highest after-market purchase per capita out there.

As a third-party accessory developer, I don't care about market share but what platform someone will buy on the aftermarket. You don't see much Chevy Cruze aftermarket items out there? You do see lots of aftermarket Corvette (pop-up headlights live!) and Jeep.

It is also why I didn't bother with Google IO this week.

I dont understand your reply. Im presuming your implying that android adopters dont have money?

You do realise that in the UK you can get the latest iPhone for free on a contract.

OK this is purely for the the people saying that Apple 'invented' this and Google are just copying (I know it is not most of you that think this)

Here is MirrorLink it is quite old and has been supported on a number of mobile phones and audio units over the years but has not seen much wide adoption, it is fair to say that CarPlay and Android Auto are just a form of proprietary MirrorLink.

What is this date on this video? oh yes October 2011 and the actual first concept was shown in 2009
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jTyVPLZuZI

Apparently Windows Phones are going to be using MirrorLink, so I (and all you people should too) hope that car manufacturers support all three, no questions asked, as default, that way you can just plug whatever phone you have in and it just works, as many of you have said all the computing is done on the phone anyway, all you are buying in the car is a glorified touchscreen and video passthrough.

If we have Microsoft in the dash, do we need to turn off the car and restart it if we find a bug?

No worries. Apple will dominate from 2015.

I wonder why there is no commend on GOOGLE UGLY LG watch. LOOOL.
I can imagine only some crazy Korean could wear it.

Usability

Apple has always been known as the frontrunner in usability. But this time they need to rethink their homescreen.

It needs to be different for the CarPlay. I think Android Auto will be easier to use while driving.

Well, I watched a good 30 minutes of real demos of both along with the glossy sales videos and theres not too much in it, hopefully all car systems will support both in time and retrospectively too.

Both are a big improvement on car systems and you'll obviously prefer the one who's eco-system you're already a member of as the data you use will be on the car screen.

That aside I think there are some pros and cons to both.

CarPlay
Pros: Looks a more refined easier to navigate system for the car. Faster and more responsive, already supports everything I'd use. Includes SMS/iMessage support.
Cons: Apple Maps still needs improving to use as a GPS I think, more locked down than Android Auto though I'm not sure id want anymore apps in my car really. Not enough manufacturers supporting at the minute.

Android Auto
Pros: Google now on the home screen with the cards is a great idea, Google maps of course too. More brands have signed up for support from the start.
Cons: Seems a lot slower than CarPlay, I think the interface looks too cluttered and confusing at times and too colourful for a car environment - its also more distracting with the bright backgrounds and notification cards. No messages...

Edit: Thanks everyone for answering my question.

I would think the companies would have to come up with some uniform standard where all they need do, at the customer request, is to install the system at the dealership. Something along the line of plug and play.

Ridiculous...

More like "Android for Car -- Me too!!"

I don't see any one platform dominating. There have been proprietary systems integrating into smartphones for over ten years now.

What is new is smartphone OS houses are working on automotive centric sync / companion apps embedded inside these car center stacks.

If you think the Android announcement is a wreck, just wait it you see the comedy of errors inevitably coming out of Redmond for this bandwagon.

Tile interface on car dash? Heck, I bet the prototype has been running for a few months by now.

Also, this shows how Palm was so ahead of the game. If they were still around, I could see them integrating into this quickly.

That is five to ten years down the road. Automotive has been keeping away from open systems for years due to concerns of driver safety and a "not invented here" mindset that has kept them running for almost a century.

What needs to happen is a third party house come up with a companion app running in car center stacks that connects with most of the major smartphones. There are a few in mind but they don't have the marketing moxy you need to for an OEM design-in deal.
