Google already has most of our data and now they can get the last pieces of the puzzle by following all car movements. I hope we will be able to rip this out or disable it. ****** Google and the NSA.

Just what we need, though, more ways for drivers to get distracted and disconnected from the actual driving experience.

Just because I came to a thread doesn't mean I do care. I simply came here to write that (and now this).

That's it.

If you truly did not care, you would have moved on. Visiting the article and this comment thread means it piqued your interest enough that you rationalized in your mind it was worth spending time and energy and doing something in it.

I don't see how some manufacturers, such as Honda (who has committed to both the Open Automotive Alliance and Apple) will be able to support both platforms. Perhaps they will have some models supporting Android Car and others supporting CarPlay? That doesn't make sense. Also, I don't see how there could be a modular solution where they can "swap out" to the other platform.

From what I read, isn't CarPlay, and I'm assuming this new Android Auto, installed as a part of OS on the phone? I think car manufacturers are just designing their media consoles with the ability to project the installed app from the phone to the screen in the car and using the controls installed (volume up/down, voice commands, etc.) with the app.

Seriously.

They literally went on for like 10 minutes about how they've (apparently) just invented drop shadows.

If you didnt get anything out of their new UI design, I dunno what to tell you. Multiple layers and floating controls would be considered the word of God if Apple got to this first and not "just inventing the drop shadow".

I know a lot of people will be against me on this but this is not APPLE NEWS.

I come to MacRumors for Apple news, not Google/Android news.

I DON'T CARE!

This. Macrumors should change its name. It's rarely about Apple anymore.

So is this on overlay like Carplay? With a properly equipped car, if I plug in an iPhone, I'll get Carplay and plug in an android, I'll get Android Auto?

It was very easy and discussed when Carplay was demonstrated.

Apple Car play is a module that runs on QNX. AndroidAuto should be as well. Should be an easy toggle back and forth on the infotainment system.

Google is probably just riding on top of the work and hardware specifications Apple and auto makers have already hashed out.

To be fair.. this is Apple news. Some company announces their competitor to an Apple product. They discuss at length the similarities between the two services. It is kind of Apple news. Although, not front page worthy.

I would not by a vehicle with android OS in it. So ridiculous.

I would not buy a vehicle with an Apple OS in it. I just want a plain car with an AUX port. I think all this tech reliance these days what with the iWatches and Carplays is so ridiculous :)

You guys keep saying that but then you don't offer any reason as to WHY it is "better."

Who is "you guys"? Here is my reasoning. CarPlay is a black screen with 6 icons. Android Auto is a phone based extension with a "card" like display. It looks so much better.

It's voice-operated. Look at a CarPlay video - clearly usability was not given too much thought there, and it requires plenty of physical button presses to operate.

The interface manages to pack a lot more information yet manages to be more readable because it's not using an illegible typeface.

CarPlay is extremely basic. It's a frontend for a couple of apps and that's it. Android Auto gives you tons of information and is extremely integrated.
