Will someone please explain what about Android Auto is better than Apple CarPlay?

Serious question. They look to have the EXACT SAME functionality!

I agree the apps will have the same basic functionality. Probably the only feature on Android that is better is the homescreen UI shows Google Now. So if you search for a restaurant or you are leaving work, when you plug in your phone, the homescreen will give you cards to navigation home or to that business without having to ask for it. It seems Apple is adding slivers of this type of functionality in iOS, but we haven't really seen it made useful yet.

So......imagine a GM car? I don't understand why Android and Nvidia are required.

Or Toyota for the fire hazard and doors catching fire, Ford for their throttle getting stuck issue, Dodge and their Challengers catching fire, so just about any car manufacture out there.

Just don't want to limit it to a certain one. :)

Lots and lots of speculation and opinions on unreleased products. Funny.

For me I'll be impressed either way when the "rubber hits the road" and you can actually use some of this stuff. Then I'll form an opinion.

Stop your astroturfing Parise, it's getting too obvious. I bet you are financially invested in Google somehow.

If I was financially invested in Google, I wouldn't be online right now. I'd probably be cruising the Mediterranean on my hover board.

Well, you will probably only see a few cars come with CarPlay or Android Auto this year. At best, next Fall/Winter will be when we see a real push to have these from car manufacturers being standard.

Man, hardware releases have been slow this year to say the least.

I was hoping for more Google Play Edition devices, no mention. No new Mac Mini or any new hardware for that matter at WWDC.

Either this is the worse year for hardware ever, or there is going to be a ***** storm of new hardware in Q4 and I'm going to be massively broke.

I was holding on for the retina MBA. Still holding on, actually.

Its one thing to support your brand

but it is another to not acknowledge a competitor who brings a good product to market. The attitude here reminds me of the Yankee vs. Red Sox rivalry. At the end of the day a good sportsman shakes the hand of the opposing team players. Its what civilized people do.

I don't see how some manufacturers, such as Honda (who has committed to both the Open Automotive Alliance and Apple) will be able to support both platforms. Perhaps they will have some models supporting Android Car and others supporting CarPlay? That doesn't make sense. Also, I don't see how there could be a modular solution where they can "swap out" to the other platform.

No it'll simply be an option you choose like choosing a sound system or if you want a sunroof or if you want AWD.

So how long before you see "and there is a 50%sale on clothes in the store on your right" and many similar ads...?

I absolutely LOVE the fact that someone on this forum who is trying to bring a shred of balance to a discussion against a raft of frothing fanboy posts suddenly finds themselves accused of bias.

Pure Genius.

From my understanding about the Carplay platform, is that it's not a in dash operating system on its own.

It's basically an application layer that will run on car head units that already run one of the open platforms, such as QNX.

If this is the case for both CarPlay and Android Auto, then there doesn't need to be "one or the other".

it's a purely software logic at this point. The base headunit runs it's standard HTML5 UI on top of QNX. Then when you plug in a smartphone, it will automatically load the module required for that device. Detects an Android phone, fires up Android Auto layer. Detects an iPhone, fires up CarPlay.

this would be the ideal solution for any car manufacturer, giving them full support

You have that right. They are both embedded apps that run on the OS already inside most recent model cars. QNX is all over the automotive business. In theory, you can have a car or even an aftermarket car stereo run both.

Now comes the biggest automotive OEM push mindset vs. consumer / open systems pull mindset collision in recent years. GM learned the hard-way you cannot just install a embedded system and expect mass use (i.e. OnStar.)

Cannot wait for Guy Kawasaki to chime in on this.

read this as
"Google Maps seems to know where everything is, now including you !"

Yet another pool of data for google to mine and sell. I wonder how long it will be before they start giving directions which just happen to make you drive past google advertisers.

At least I'll get to my destination... not end up in a river or plane runway like iMaps

Ever heard of iAds?

Why do you say that? Honda will already support their own craptastic UI by default. The iOS and Android versions aren't loaded until you plug your phone in. From what we have seen, the amount of work required is fairly minimal to support both iOS and Android. Most of the work is being done on the phone.

Luxury cars will roll with Apple due to its premium brand. Cheap cars like Scion will roll with Android due to their similarity and reputation of being a peasantry brand.

Competition is great!

Now only if these devices were modular so we can choose which to get when we buy the car.

That's a pretty weak listing on partners. Especially when Apple's list was something like

Ferrari, GM, Honda, and every other major car manufacturer in the world.

Google's got Spotify (destined to bleed cash and disappear), Pandora (another one with high subscription base but losing money), and some startup named JoyRide. Oh, this just in, Google's got some dude off the street to support it too.

Walmart sells Apple products. your comment is nothing but BS.

"Your cars trunk and cabin are full of garbage.
Please , step out of your car, lock and unlock.
The problem should be fixed"

It does? I watched this video and it looked basically the same as CarPlay.

It's good enough concept for early presentation , but why use Pee Wee Herman for this ad ? I don't get it.

Hmm. From what I've read of today's IO it was a bit of a carbon copy of Apple, even if they have been worked on everything for several months.

Anyhoo, as I understand Audi amongst others will be using Android in their cars, guess it makes sense? But I just want a simple easy system that integrates with my phone that I already have, and I have that already with my Ford Sync, not the crappy touch screen Sync 2.0 either.

I see the comments here are full of the usual Apple fanboy BS too

I know a lot of people will be against me on this but this is not APPLE NEWS.

I come to MacRumors for Apple news, not Google/Android news.

I DON'T CARE!

Typical sheep! You won't find a bigger fan of Apple then me! And I don't like much of anything Android. But to say that you don't care about this headline is just plain narrow-minded.

haha yeah, the Ferrari 458 Italia caught fire due to rubbish glue they used in the chassis, the Porsche GT3 was pulled just before release this year due to a fire risk from the engine, I think the Lamborghini Gallardo also had a reputation for catching fire...

Yeah, you can say most manufacturers have, issues, with cars sometimes.

Imagine a car with iOS. In 12 months it won't get any support, updates or new additions.

And won't support any iPhone after those 12 months either, or apps :D
