I read a very interesting article on this yesterday. It said that, where we are headed with data mining is individualized marketing AND PRICING - a market of one. This means, for example, based on the fact that you just uploaded pictures of your new car, and based on customer reviews of its stereo, when you go to Crutchfield.com your prices could be high than mine since they perceive your desire to be greater.

Wow, for a marketing or sales guys this is a big boost for them. Leeches love google for sure. lol

Well, then why use Android at all. What the hell is the point of that? I'd rather use whatever other Unix that's as far from them as possible and not really on them for anything. Fork it away, far far away and never ever deal with Google should be the plan if you have an inkling to use it.

For 99% in the west Google and Android are linked; and Google wants it that way and makes it a living hell of OEM's that try to get away. It's a really bad deal for anyone in the Internet of things to get involved with Android because there is already a big history of OEM getting nothing in return but red ink from this involvement.

They may not see the backend deal they're getting into right away that will involve Google getting a hold of all their sensor data, but there is no point for Google to code these things if that's not part of their plan.

Lesser of two evils when attached to GMS and the best of the lot without GMS.

So FUD still rules the roost. What's new?

Can Apple Photos do all the background categorisation and processing that Google Photos does?

Can I write "me on the beach" and give me the pictures where I appear on a beach?

And, by the way, it is not a new app, it is just pulled off from Google Plus into an independent app

Better yet can apple engineers type in "topless girls on the beach" and bring up all the topless girls on the beach pictures from all users? #

They might do that in the US where you have little protection when you're an author. But in Europe, I could not make my photos public domain even if I wanted to, there is no legal way to do that... So, if Google sells or gives my photos to third parties, they would be going against the law...
And Google is not Facebook. They're not to bad. They will use your photos to target ads, it's their business model, but they don't try to gain property of them like Facebook. That's why a lot of pro photographers went from Facebook to Google+.

A quick GOOGLE search tells me otherwise. In fact EU copyright length is basically the same as it is in America,

I was curious by your claim because it left the door open for art to be locked away forever with nobody ever able to use it again if an artist and their lineage died out. That seemed unlikely.

Apple has over $150 Billion in reserves. To say they charge for storage because they don't make money selling ads is reaching pretty hard. It would be far more believable if Apple simply said "We charge because we can." If they said something as crazy as "We charge for storage because we don't sell ads", who would actually believe that? Currently we don't know why Apple charges so much. I feel pretty darn confident it ain't the reason you gave.

Apple does the same thing. They tell you so in the privacy policy. Thing is, there's nothing wrong with it. Both companies give you options to opt out. Both companies will still sell the ad space. The ads just won't be targeted.

What business school teaches you to charge for products based on how much money you have in the bank?

and google wallet was out before Apple pay... what's your point?

That apple didn't name apple pay apple wallet. Seems his point was pretty obvious.

Flickr gives 1TB of photo storage for free, and not compressed by Yahoo. That seems like a better deal than Google's "unlimited" for free, as long as you don't mind it being compressed and data-mined to sell ads to you.

Did you mean to write "unless you don't mind" instead of "as long as"?

Personally, as for Google or Apple showing me targeted ads via an automated system, I like it. Spam detection is also automated, and I like that too (although sometimes it catches things it shouldn't).

I have no problem with a machine figuring out that I've uploaded pictures of Playa del Carmen, and then later on when a machine sees that I'm searching for flights to Cancun, showing me ads for condos in Playacar instead of ads for tires or diapers.

Such smarter, more contextual searches are the future. Apple knows this, too, and has filed for patents as strange as figuring out our mood from what we do on our devices, and tailoring ads to fit that mood. Credit card issuers know it too, and have been exploring the idea of selling realtime recommendations based on our past spending history. (E.g. they know, more than any other source, exactly what restaurants and spending levels we usually favor.)

Of course, if this extra automated help worries someone, then they should use and pay for different photo services, that's all. They're not required to use it.

I wonder what 'auto backup for apps' means... L improved the backups somewhat, but still can't touch iOS in this arena.

I hope that it means that App data will now be backed up as well.

A big issue with Android and "switching devices" is that individual app data can only be backed up via 3rd party backup tools, many requiring root.

Google currently only backs up your settings, and as of Lollipop, at least backsup the "look" of your homescreens with what programs were installed and where they were located. Makes a fresh start easier. But you still lose all the data inside the apps themselves.

Once again Google Copies Apple. From Apple pay to the way photos and their OS functions. When will Google and Samsung have a thought of their own?

I couldn't care less who copies who as long as the product keeps getting better. Especially when it's not platform-specific. The Google Photos app is way better than anything Apple has right now. If it pushes Apple to put out a better product with more (free) storage then great.

Remember that the reasoning for it is much different. Google analyzes all your photos, uses location data, and more to build a better profile about you, which they can sell to advertisers. Because of this, Google makes money off your photos and can afford to give you unlimited storage at no cost.

Apple doesn't do this so they charge for storage.

Simply two different business models.

Ever heard of iAds?

In other words, Google lets advertisers foot the bill. Smart. Advertisers are going to display ads anyway, so why not get something in return.

The different business model, is that Apple has an extra hundred billion dollars in the bank from charging premium prices, partly due to a pretext of giving "more privacy". Some of that surcharge could be used to pay for services that would otherwise be paid for by advertising.

Of course, Apple isn't really that private. Not only does Apple sell anonymous slots for iAds (just like Google does), but they also get paid by banks to let all the usual info flow through to them via Apple Pay (instead of being withheld as with the original Google Wallet or other private wallets).

Moreover, Apple gets over a billion dollars a year from Google as kickback for being the default iOS search engine, AND sharing what Google gets from selling ad space to be seen by iOS users. In other words, Apple is sharing directly in the profits made by selling their iOS users as a product to Google's advertisers.

Are you aware that this app is the same Google+ Photos app that was released before Apple Photos?

When people will investigate a little or read the threads before writing claims like yours?

Apple Photos has been in the works for quite a while. Maybe you should research just cuz Google dumped it out early doesn't mean they were first.

I'm assuming you're also mad whenever Apple steals from Google, right?

Apple does not take from Google, they take form Jailbreakers. Again just cuz Google pooped it out first does not mean they thought of it first.

Google = Copy paste

Don't understand why they changed it to Android Pay, like literally copying Apple's naming for their service, despite Android already having the Google Wallet name?

They've now copied each other, which is fine.

I like that Android is using "Pay", and Apple has renamed "Passbook" to "Wallet".

Now they're both basically aligned the same way, which will make it easier for users:
  • Wallet = container for cards and coupons
  • Pay = a purchase action

Wow.

Are you serious?

Google is the modern Windows, copy paste

You must not pay attention. When the first Google phone was made it looked like BlackBerry... then iPhone launched... Google phone scrapped... a few years later.. shocker it looked just like an iPhone.. copy paste.... From that point forward... copy paste... add some changes, copy paste, add some changes.... the root of Android and Google's obsession to copy is Apple. I guess it is flattery.

I take it you're going to blatantly ignore anything that went the other way, right?
