iFixit: "If we're going to build a sustainable electronics industry, consumers must have options to repair products themselves,"

...and what better way to do that than paying us to be a part of the process.
That's a pretty cynical way to look at it.

Yes, they make money in this partnership. But let's appreciate how they're doing something none of the other big tech corps are doing and actually providing what appears to be easy-to-follow DIY instructions and parts that are safe and accessible for most customers.

If this partnership was with Apple you'd all be applauding it regardless of price.

Apple changed the battery of my iPhone 8 and broke the Touch ID. If official technicians can't do it properly, then there is no way I would risk it. Providing parts and partnering with repair companies are all a cover to not provide easily replaceable batteries. Instead of putting more and more cameras in the rear, phone manufacturers should focus on that.
We'd likely be going back to the flexing, creaking back covers of every smartphone that had a removable battery. No thanks

Smartphones COULD be designed with easy to replace gaskets, easy to swap batteries and screens, but nooooo, we get glued shut iPhones designed by a company touting its environmental friendliness instead.

Odd how you only blame Apple for this when most manufacturers do the same.

Battery change doesn't necessarily have to be from the back. It can be done from the side, and a cap over it to preserve water resistance.

Nothing will ever be repairable again because normies will be the excuse of lobbyists. You can't hurt the normies. Everything explodes and catches fires. I truly loathe corporate America. Using technology is getting harder and harder as more and more users are dumb and don't care at all besides their extremely limited and shallow use.

Everything is riddled with ads, locked down and form over function is the defacto standard.

And the worst part is that entire governments rely on corporations instead of pushing open source software & hardware. Having no idea about technology makes it worse for everyone.

And honestly Apple isn't a huge problem because their influence isn't that invasive for the majority of the population but Microsoft and Google are dangerous. They have monopolies on vital software and services. You really can't avoid using their products. They've tricked all of us.

Ahh self-repair, the best way for the manufacturer to shirk its repair and warranty obligations while simultaneously propelling marketing outfits like iFixit into the limelight and avoiding drawing too much attention to the shoddy third party repairer networks they already have in place that universally screw the customers.

You fixed it? Warranty gone! That's reality.

Give us a software and hardware warranty that lasts 5 years and reasonable up front fixed repair costs and service or piss off. 99% of people don't want to fix their own stuff. 99% of people do however want someone to fix it without screwing you.

I demand:

1. Your hardware to have parts availability for 5 years with all costs and service turnarounds identified up front.
2. Your hardware to have security and software availability for 5 years.
3. This to be available to ALL owners from the day the device is first sold.

Everything else is sweeping reality under the carpet and that is disposable trash that ends in landfill.

Clearly they didn’t help you learn to take a joke.
The person you're replying to wasn't mean, didn't freak out or anything, and just followed up with information about phones they've owned. Really looks like you're the one with a chip on your shoulder.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max is an amazing phone - best I've owned, I think - but the Pixel 5 was decent for the year I owned it and the 4XL was great. I'll be buying an iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the Pixel really isn't to be ridiculed.

iFixit pretends to advocate for consumer repairs because they sell the consumers repair kits. Oh and they do the repairs themselves after consumers try and fail to do these complicated repairs.

There really is nothing else to say about it.

No chip on my shoulder. I read it the wrong way and I apologized.

Yeah I just hope the training the Apple Service techs go through is top notch, because there’s a lot in there to break easily.

Speaking of: is there an easy way to reseal the phone after service to get the water proofing back?

They broke your Touch ID while changing a battery despite their training and you still trust them more than yourself?

If its under warranty customers will just take the device back to the manufacturer. This is for the benefit of out of warranty devices.

Meanwhile Apple’s solutions such as its MacBooks have soldered down storage… and if they fail requires replacement of the logic board. Not quite repairable. The question is, will apple ever consider bringing removable / upgradable storage back as a feature of its laptops?
