I don’t understand why anyone would buy anything from Google anymore. They just prove time and time again that they are unable to create a sustainable ecosystem. Stick to search guys: it’s the only thing you’re good at.
At the time there wasn’t much option and for me it was prior to the google buyout anyway (if Apple would have pushed into this market I probably wouldn’t have touched nest)

So about 14 years of useful life out of home automation? If you’re lucky…
Well, enjoy it while it lasts, I still prefer my old style thermostat which keeps running and running…

I think mine is first or second generation. Any recommendations for a similar good working unit for when I can't use the features? (like remote)

For anyone looking to still use one of the discontinued models, have you tried to use it with a Home Assistant setup?
If not, I would assume that would still work and give you all of the control back?

I have a 3rd gen Nest thermostat which doesn't sound like it has been cut yet, coming soon I know. But I did have Home Assistant setup on a NAS a while back and had this Nest on it and it worked well.

Anyone have experience with testing or using it with that setup? If not, I would definitely look into it if you own a discontinued model and want to continue using it fully.

Just a reminder to those that do replace their Thermostats to please recycle their old one if the can at the nearest E-waste center or Best Buy, etc. Even though Google and most large corporations don’t seem to care about e-waste, I hope the people using all this stuff try and avoid it ending up in a landfill.

I was an intern at Nest as an Industrial Designer in the 2012-2013 era. I remember getting the prototype manufacturing sample if the solid piece of Aluminum for the second gen. Felt like we were at a little Apple. I was so sad when google bought them because I knew Google didn't know what to do with them.

I installed a forced air system a few years ago and put in a Nest. Now it's obsolete. cool. The new Thermostat doesn't even look like the old design. it's horrible IMO.
Why, a few years ago, did you purchase and install a 2012-2013 product?

This is just a lesson to everyone that when buying any sort of "smart" device, always make sure that it supports a standard LOCAL control protocol, whether it be HomeKit or Matter. If your device supports these, it'll pretty much work forever.

I have my complaints about my Ecobee but at least it supports HomeKit, so it will ALWAYS work. Even if Ecobee the company completely vanishes and their servers vanish, I'll still be able to control my thermostat through the Apple Home app, or even HomeKit integration on Home Assistant if I were to leave the Apple platform.

Remember, local control is the way to go. Don't buy anything that 100% depends on cloud servers.
All well and good saying that, but I’ve had my nest thermostats since 2017 (luckily 3rd gen). I use homebridge so they appear in HomeKit but soon as google end support for these, they’re going to be painful to have. Ah well, problem for future me 🥲

Buying anything google for your smart home is an instant L. Home equipment should be good for decades not years. Unfortunately this is now the norm, even car manufacturers drop so much less than 10 years after the car is sold. It’s honestly a joke

It's all about the data, it's google, your data is their product. They want to get everyone without a google account off the thermostat so they can get you into a new thermostat that requires a google account and they can collect your data and sell it.

That's not quite it either- if it was they would force the Google account transition and this wouldn't have an impact on people that already converted their Nest account.

Attention world:

Do not buy any Google Home products, or anything requiring Google support, like Nest. This announcement confirms why.

A thermostat could last 50 years. First and second generation Nest thermostats are perfectly fine, uncomplicated, and have decades of life remaining. Providing connectivity to the Google Home app likely costs less than the coffee supplies bill for one month.

This is about killing the functionality of perfectly fine products, in your own home. This is Google reaching into your home, and your pockets, to force an unneeded and unwanted thermostat replacement.

Don’t do it. Simply continue to use your Nest thermostat as you would any offline thermostat. Households around the world function just great without a WiFi-connected thermostat.

And learn from this. Don’t ever buy another Google Home product. Alphabet and Google are not to be trusted in your home. No thermostats, no cameras, no Google TV, no Google assistive devices.

Total boycott.

I have 4 of these older nest thermostats. I have never updated my login to use Google even though I’m prompted to do so every time. I’m still logging into my original Nest account. Does none know if this login portal will go away too?

If they’re killing remote control they could at least allow local API so things like Homebridge, Home Assistant could still work. As I understand the API is currently working through the cloud…

Typical google *🏼*🏼*🏼

It breaks my canary device which bridges nest and homekit. Sucks

I bought my house 18 years ago... the finished basement (which we don't use often) has an analog thermostat that was installed when the room was built (1980's) and the main level of the home has had its working thermostat replaced with a Nest, which will now have to be replaced with something else.... all while the basement thermostat with its mercury switch just continues to work.
