I ordered the 4th gen last weekend to replace my 1st gen I got back in 2011. Seems silly that they have to kill the online functionality, but at least I got to take advantage of the discount. It’s also nice that it has Matter support, so it can be used with the Apple home app.

This is why I avoid smart devices or general newfangledness wired into my house. Thermostats used to work for decades, and simple ones still do, I’d rather not have one that requires “support.” I have no Nest, smart light switches, etc.

I was skeptical when I first saw USB ports wired into walls. Sure enough they are now obsolete with USB-C being standard.

But hey maybe rewiring things in your house isn’t too bad, seriously.
Exactly. I avoid anything that requires The internet or someone else's servers for full functionality. It ultimately just creates more ewaste in the future. and People on here freak out about plastic packaging in a phone box lol. Games, game consoles, lighting products, even some functions of cars are now disposable.

Long software support but still disappointing to hear that some of these devices will stop working. Sadly no other way forward than to upgrade these devices.

I like the original nest and that I could turn the whole device left or right to adjust the temp. I don’t like pressing up and down buttons.

Are there any similar form factor alternatives?

Is it time for a kickstarter idea? 🤔

I had the original Nest thermostat - I preordered it in 2011 when originally announced, and loved it. I was pretty annoyed when Google bought them.
That thermostat was still on the wall of my house, working great, when I moved out in 2021. Despite my feelings about the acquisition by Google, I had no intention of replacing it, but after we moved I opted for a different brand entirely. I may not like it as much as I liked my original Nest, but this news only affirms that I made the right decision in looking elsewhere.

This is sadly the risk of smart-home devices. Your home suddenly depends upon tech companies not deprecating basic functionality.

For those of us reasonably practical, unafraid of a little light re-wiring, and who stay up to date with tech news its pretty easy to replace a thermostat if your smart model is eventually deprecated (even if it does mean you need to spend money on a new device that doesn't do anything that the old one couldn't).

But for people like my 70 year old parents, I imagine they will first find out they need to do something when their heating randomly stops working one day. Then they'll spend ages trying to find out what's wrong with the boiler, which is actually perfectly fine, before finally calling out an expensive plumber who'll sell them a new thermostat with a significant mark-up. And then they'll get endlessly frustrated by having to re-learn how to manage their heating schedule.

While I really like my Tado set-up, there's a lot to be said for an old fashioned 'dumb' thermostat.

Installed my replacement 4th gen Nest thermostat last night, replacing my 1st gen (2011) Nest. Installation wasn't too hard to do, but the instructions they provide are minimal at best. My biggest gripe is that the wallplate they include is a funny oval shape which does not perfectly cover the original thermostat's scar on the wall. The original Nest thermostat had a rectangular plate which does a better job. I've ordered a third-party plate which should provide more coverage. (Google and everyone else -- STOP USING FUNNY SHAPES FOR THINGS!)

Got Google Home configured and even got my Nest Protects showing up, so everything works. I'm still irritated at the dropping of Nest Protect. When my 3 Nest Protects stop working in 2030, all of the Google/Nest stuff will be removed.

Why are you keeping the thermostat installed rather than simply replace them with something with local support? The fact its a new thermostat would be a reminder too and not require you to lose features.
Two are in rental properties. They can be just used manually.

We have two at home (dual zone heating) and if I am honest, we never use it remotely that much anyway.

We do own a holiday lodge, that has a E model installed and I think support is carrying on for a bit on that one. We do use that a lot when before travelling there. We have it warmed up a few hours prior to arrival. If support stops on that, we will upgrade.

I have a gen 2. Did not receive email for $130 discount. On chat with support for 2 hours, bounced to 7 different reps. Last one basically said wait for the email if you don’t get it you are not eligible. Basically said “pound sand”. Terrible customer service. I like the Nest interface but this is ridiculous. Who else should I look at besides EcoBee?

I too preordered the original Nest in 2011, and never moved from the Nest app to Google Home. I also have 3 protects, which all expire this year starting late summer into the fall. While researching new smoke/CO2 detectors, I also was looking at a replacement thermostat to just get out of Google's Nest. The replacement thermostat was delivered last Wednesday, then two days later the end of life email arrived. That pretty much validated my decision on the spot.
