99% of normal people phone buyers have no idea what any of the chip specs mean at all; or even what it is called. They could care about what size your member is here boasting about having the best chip today like some dumb tech nerd who spent 2-3 times that on a phone to open apps 1/2 second faster.

They want to spend the least money they can on something that works right now today and runs smooth.
I agree, yet a lot of them will complain when they cannot get this or that amazing new feature in a future system update and cry "programmed obsolescence"…

I think a good SE would be roughly the same size, with a bigger screen by using the iPad TouchID button.
Include a better camera too. It would still use all existing and cheaper tech than the iPhone 12/12 Pro (and obviously 13) and the price would probably be about the same for a phone that would look much more modern. 😊

Waiting for all the folks here on MacRumors who expressed outrage over Apple leaving out the charger, to show similar wailing and gnashing of teeth over Google's decision to do the same thing.
I'll do you one better: Apple does it and it's a Congressional hearing and multiple state AGs investigation. Google does it, and no one bats an eye.

If there were a way to get an Android, easily lock it down so Google isn’t devouring my personal info, and transfer from iPhone, I’d actually be interested in this. Unfortunately I’m not at a point in my life where I can spend an entire day (or three) configuring a phone.

Clear Phone all the way now.

Comes without 5G too.. thanks!

5G the feature that is useful mostly to state level actors... otherwise it's the same as 4g if that... but the mmWave should be pretty good at interacting with your graphene nanoparticles you've injected into your body, making the Borg wet dream come ever closer...

I'm not sure it takes an entire day to configure an Android phone.

But even if it did take a day... are you sure you couldn't find a day to configure a phone that you could use for the next 1,000 days?

:p

Seems to have become standard practice for companies to let Apple make unpopular choices, take the heat and hate for it, and when things cool down make the same choice themselves.
Lack of a charger is a good thing. Question is, are you paying less given the hardware omission?
That standard practice line that you have parroted is BS. For something to be deemed 'standard practice', I'd expect you to be able to demonstrate numerous examples to support your assertion.

Not me. They've done it I suspect so that they can;
1. Still charge you as if they are still including it.
2. Say they are reducing waste, (which they actually are), so as to avoid calls to standardise on something that isn't Lightning.

To me it looks cheap and boring. I guess that's what Google was aiming for though right? I can think of far more exciting options for the same price. Perhaps I've been using iPhones for too long?

Can you just explain how exactly it looks that way please?

Actually, I always liked Apple for their confidence in design. They didn’t give users choice, they just picked what they thought was better and usually they were right. Now this backtracking during the beta of safari and creating compromising stuff that is not fully “old” or fully “new” really doesn’t feel like Apple. Not what I expected from them as a customer. If I wanted tons of choices, settings, and overcomplicated design, I would simply choose Android, not iOS…

Definitely not! The phone price remains the same even though you now get less stuff! ZOMG! How dare they! :p

But let's be clear... that $30 charger that Apple or Google wants to sell you later didn't cost them $30 to include in the first place.

So no one should expect the retail price of a smartphone to drop by exactly $30 since a $30 charger isn't included in the box anymore.

I say leave them out. I already have PLENTY of charging solutions in my home, at my desk, in my car, etc.

I was buying 3rd-party chargers anyway... even though smartphones came with chargers in the box for all those years. I simply prefer other brands of chargers.

So if Apple, Google, Samsung, etc want to exclude their own chargers... it's fine by me!

:)

It kind of make sense, I have a box of USB chargers from various devices. Mainly, because i upgraded a lot of my household dual sockets to include USB capability.
