sooo i have to open an app then press the microphone button? Can they just integrate this into siri so its one thing. IF the app isn't even on the first page its going to be more presses then just opening the nest app.
Any cydia app for siri control?

If Nest is better, and you're just not getting it because of some irrational hatred of Google, it is your loss.

That's a pretty big if. I don't think nest is better at all. I've looked into it, it doesn't suit my needs.

I'm not sure from where you've drummed up this "irrational hatred of Google" you're assigning to me but google's privacy policies and actions did effect my decision. Which was, in fact, rational. But thanks anyway.

Privacy issues notwithstanding, the main reason I chose the honeywell over the nest was I want the thermostat to do what I tell it, not try to "learn" what my needs are. The learning aspect was intriguing enough to warrant a closer look, which I gave it. It doesn't suit my needs. It may very well be terrific for other people.

Just what I needed, the ability to control room temperature using voice commands. How have I been surviving without this essential feature?

Wait until Apple does it and it'll be MAGICAL!

What's that? All I need to do is upgrade my phone to have this new functionality... please take my $900!

----------

Do tell. How are those free services costing you?

Dude you really don't get sarcasm do you...

----------

"Google, what is the temperature of my room?"

Checking...
Uploading data to servers...
Contacting NSA...
Storing information for an indefinite amount of time...
Analyzing possible ad opportunities...
Comparing customer search history to this request...

"The temperature is 70 degrees. Would you be interested in buying some sunscreen?"

If google needs more information about me to know that I don't want a U2 album downloaded to my device then so be it. It's the lesser of two evils.

I'm a huge Apple fan and I do dislike the business model of Google. I also realise how important privacy is.

The problem is that all these new features are available from Google right now. And they work great. Apple? not so much: apps could not connect with each other until recently, Apples Cloud services are terrible, Siri doesn't work half as good as Google Voice and most importantly, Apple mainly focuses on the US.

I live in Europe: I cannot use Siri in my language, I haven't used a Passbook once, HomeKit is still far on the horizon, ...

Apple only works in its tiny garden. That used to be fine, but the world is getting bigger and bigger. And Google Now is pretty convincing. It works with a lot of international content providers, unlike Apple. If I just use Apple I only get "this service is not available where you live. Please move to the US".

And while Apple used to have the advantage of being beautifully designed, that ship has sailed too. Compared to the ugly Notification Center in iOS, I think Google Now is much nicer and it works a lot better.

I have recently purchased a Nest, and i'm very happy with it (although I think it's stil pretty stupid for a smart thermostat)

Google is playing it really good: I kept location services off for the Google app, but now I'm considering flipping that switch. And maybe in a few years, when Apple catches up, I might consider returning to Apple. But right now, I don't want to keep waiting until Apple moves forward.

I'm surprised you use the internet all.

Love our Nest. Have had it for 2 or more years, I forgot. It's easy to use. Very accessible through the app. Saves us money. And I have noticed in stores that the price doesn't go down. I could be wrong though.

But, but, Google's tracking your every move! I don't understand how you can even live like that!

Nest's privacy policy has not changed since they were acquired by Google. Nest data is not shared with Google.

----------

I don't understand the usefulness of this change.

Current process: Open Nest app, touch the screen to change the temp.

This new process: Open Google app, touch the microphone, tell google to turn up the temp and wait until the request is processed.

Now I do understand it on an android phone, I'd imagine it works like Siri and You just tell your phone to change the temp without having to open any apps.

Well, one of the reasons of the Google iOS app's existence is to tease you with features found on Android. The Google Now "card" for Nest makes sense on Android since it is easily accessible without opening an app (and accessible through Chrome's notification center on the desktop). On iOS, the Nest integration is not really something many people will find useful.

----------

Nest is owned by Google whose sole business is harvesting disturbingly huge amounts of private information about you and serving you ads, via Google Ads, based on that data. If you think Google does anything else, you're mistaken - anything else Google does is just a front to collect information about you and serve ads based on it.

Please show me where Nest's privacy policy has changed to allow Google to use Nest's data.

You didn't try too hard then because the nest can do exactly what you tell it to do, without it 'learning' anything. So, again, your loss.
