I get what you are saying, but I assure you if I am confused then most people won't pick up on this technology because they will even be more confused.
No, they won't. Passkeys have many adoption hurdles, but this is not one of them. A small percentage of people who fixate on things like password managers and think their fandom of them is important will get confused, but most people won't. If they use an implementation that uses a "password" like this at all, they'll call it a passphrase, a recovery phrase, or a PIN, and most people will acknowledge that using this single thing in one specific scenario is wildly different than having a password for many accounts, and then they'll never think about it again. They won't be concerned that it's also a word you type, and therefore the "replacing passwords" they read on an internet forum was a lie.

I don't mean to be rude, but you've made it the point. If it's literally "If I'm confused most people will be" well no. Literally no one here is confused by the things you're confused by.

The confusing part is only there because you don’t seem to listen to the people explaining it and somehow have this fixed perception. Many have been patiently trying to help to explain but you keep coming back to how you use passwords. Which is fine, you can keep using them if you prefer that and the sites support they. No problem at all.

Me I’d happily switch to a more secure mechanism and prefer to manage my own keys.

Of course I listen. I learned much about it since I talked to other forum members here and I believe other "lurkers" in the forum have been reading and learning too. Choosing between passwords or passkeys is something of a personal choice though.

no offense taken. I just want to point out I have been online daily for the past 25 years or so. I used to make websites in 97/98 on Geocities and Xoom.com .If its confusing to me I assure you its confusing for the rest of the average people.

Heh, ok man, but seriously, you're making my point and don't realize it. Among people who don't say things like "been online", name drop Geocities, and weren't born in 1997, I'm sure the confusion rate will be low.

And for quite a few years to come, you'll still be able to use passwords.

No you are missing the point that I am not in conflict with you and don't realize it. I am not saying passkeys are less secure or not more convenient to implement for average people. I am not even arguing with you about it, I wanted to be clarified on how it works and you and others did clarify it. Thanks.

As for confusion I have seen people call the RFID symbol on bank cards WiFi and Android tablets Windows, so I think you really over estimate their knowledge when you think they will understand how a two key encryption passkeys stored in a file somewhere in their device is going to work and how they will be able to retrieve it if their device malfunction via dead battery, dead ssd, or otherwise. You have to realize that the rest of us are not as knowledgable or as smart as you are when it comes to this area. What is easy for you to comprehend is difficult for us.

No really, everyone gets that you have trouble understanding things. You are in conflict with me, directly. You are suggesting that you are representative of most people, I am disagreeing. That is a conflict. It doesn't make us enemies, but it is a conflict. You are repeatedly suggesting something I am calling outright silly. You just aren't reading.

But the point that because you do, most other people will too, and so won't adopt it, is just silly.

Most people don't understand how Face ID works, or why Apple Pay is more secure than a credit card, but adoption of both is just great.

It'll be fine. The world will gain security, and you can keep using password managers.

Maybe with time as people gain more understanding on how it works more people will adopt passkeys including myself. I myself am ready to check out passkeys on sites that I have 2FA enabled on or do not mind losing the password to but not my main accounts like banks and emails.
