Apple has no one to blame but themselves for this. If only they'd put a A8 in an Apple TV and open up a SDK for it they'd be right back on top.

Excellent, thanks. I am happy with the Apple TV and just ordered another one and wanted to make sure it was the right choice. It meets all my needs and is dead simple for all of my guests to stream to as well. Not the best value but it's simple and reliable.

The Apple TV apps are already better the the Xbox One versions of the same things (Netflix, NHL, etc.). Shudder.

In that end that's really all that matters. No use in buying something that has a billion features you'll never need.

We got a Playstation 3 ONLY because it was a BluRay player that could also stream content and play things back from a memory card.

I think I have like four games for it. Two of them came with the system.

Apple TV was cracked, but Tim wanted more fashion in the products. So they launched the Apple Watch.

Not surprising. I'm still waiting for whatever Steve Jobs said he "cracked" with television. The ATV certainly isn't it. I use it to stream my iTunes stuff, but that's about it.

I have a Chromecast that's sits and gathers dust, wife couldn't stand having to use her phone all the time. Right next to it is a Fire TV, which is nice but Plex doesn't work reliably enough and I wish I could hide all the unused menus on it. So our 3 ATVs get somewhat heavy daily use, and they always work for the most part. The recent update to the interface is like putting lipstick on a pig though. Browsing though our modest movies collection (about 250) is such a pain, I wish I could have a cover view vs the list view. Netflix works great, but could use the newer interface. And I'm tired of having to hide useless 'channels' that require a subscription. For the love of God please just update the damn thing!!

IMHO Apple would be wise to drop ATV completely. There are no profit margins on a device that retails for less than 100€, and the benefit to the user is minimal when compared to other products.

It would be great if they shifted their focus to more important areas where they are behind, like iCloud. We've seen what happens when Apple loses focus and tries to make a million different products.

I'm very happy to see this statistic. Maybe Apple will show some urgency now.

Am I the only one here who freaking loves their AppleTV?

Don't have cable, but my buddy gave me his login info from comcast and now I get virtually every channel (HBO, Showtime, Live TV + on demand on ESPN, ABC, CNN, NBC etc) for free.

I only pay Netflix, Hulu, crunchyroll, and MLB.

Plus airplay.

There might be no margin on the device but if they opened up the App Store too it I am sure they would make quite a chunk off all sales

Well this is what happens when a company semi-abandons a project ...

I'll never understand Apple's pecking order. For instance the iMac is one of their most problematic product lines but it seems to receive tender loving care from Apple, while the mini and Apple TV are like unwanted kids locked in the basement.

I waited for over a year for Apple to update. Wound up going with Amazon FireTV. With the addition of Plex, the FireTV does everything the Apple TV does plus way more. Would've liked to kept my ecosystem pure but, Apple dropped the ball with the :apple:TV

I'm quite happy with the capabilities of my xBone. It was a rocky start last November, but 10 of the 11 things I wanted to see added to the xBone have come over the past year. #11 isn't even all that important or necessary. So...I'm doing pretty good.

In summation, I don't even know that I want anything new from Apple. So...surprise me.

No surprise here... for what it does ATV is an over priced black box.

Being the middleman for media is also bad business in the long run. Competition drives prices constantly down, but most of all it's easy for media companies to cut you off if they see fit.

when was the last time Apple updated the Apple TV?

Whatever Apple TV does can now be accomplished with something as small as Fire TV Stick.

Why do so many people keep mentioning Plex like it's not usable with Apple TV, or saying that Apple TV is locked into the iTunes ecosystem? Just mirror from your laptop/desktop using Airplay. You can use virtually any media file or container format you want that way, and streaming in 1080p is not an issue.

Apple shouldn't worry about Google.

Roku should be their only goal. Apple TV is too restrictive unless it's jailbroken. I personally own 2 roku 3's and one roku 1. Roku isn't perfect, but it's 10 times better then Apple TV unless you need the iTunes intergration.

I own two ATVs and a now a few Chromecasts ($25). Yes, the ATV does do more and I like using it for listening to music outside of Netflix but it is getting long in the tooth.

I prefer the Chromecast because it is just so much simpler to view from the iPad and cast to the TV and still use your iPad for other things. To me it's just easier to read all of the show/movie synopsis's from the iPad screen than from the TV screen, so I much prefer it this way over than using a remote to skim over the TV.

I really feel Apple is missing an opportunity here and just like another poster stated I feel there is much a bigger market with the ATV than an iWatch especially when I already have a more than capable smartphone right there. Anyway, that's getting more off topic.

I have an Apple TV 3, Roku LT, Chromecast, and now a new Fire TV Stick. The Roku and Chronecast haven't even been turned on in at least a year. I got the Fire TV Stick because it was too cheap to not try and I wanted to like it since it would have everything we use, but I just can't bring myself to turn to it first. The interface is crowded, way too busy, confusing, and slow.

Our Apple TV gets used almost exclusively in our house as we don't have cable. Netflix, Hulu Plus, PBS, and local streams from iTunes make up almost all of our watching habits. Amazon Prime streaming would be nice (hence why I bought the Fire TV Stick).

For me, the main factor in the Apple TV's favor is the IR remote. With my Logitech Harmony, the one remote easily does everything. It's a pain to have to use my phone or iPad for the chromecast, and while the dedicated remote for the Fire TV is nice, I can't use my Harmony for it since its Bluetooth.

I think the problem is they keep moving the target for the AppleTV. First it was getting cable on board, and well, that's dragged on for years. Maybe they realized, well heck, while we wait we might as well implement homekit to use it as a home automation hub. Here's to another few years!

It was nice knowing you AppleTV. You might come back another day, but everyone has already passed you up. I want to love you, I really do, but Roku was just too enticing, 2 YEARS AGO. AppleTV, you've really REALLY let yourself go. I wish you the best and hope you come back on top some day.

TC does NOT have the vision SJ had. He is not suitable for the job of Apple CEO. Everything from Apple now is plain and following the competitors. I start to wonder if TC actually USING their products, or just has his assistance show him how to use these stuff...

Whatever he cracked is definitely not relevant going into 2015, the market has changed a lot since his time.

That said, I'm surprised that Roku is still in the lead I figure Chromecast was already ahead. Even better than Chromecast is the Google Tv console, I have a dev kit and its by far the best interface out there right now.

I have both the ATV and the Chromecast. Apple TV is better but not for much and is more expensive. It really needs a HW update soon. I got the chromecast on a tv in the gym and only use it once in a while.

I hope they bring a new set with at least an A7 or A8 chip, App store, gaming features and a new UI.

Hardware

Apple is really dropping the ball not updating the Hardware since January 2013. I'd buy another Apple TV if there was a spec refresh. I just don't want to buy old hardware (A5 chip) at the same price it sold for two years ago.

Forget about Apps and Games. Sure all that should be there and ready to be implemented. But if Apple is not ready to do that, fine. Just drop an A7 chip and a little more Ram into the same black box and put it on the shelves. This is probably like a five person team working two weeks to engineer. Could have gotten this done for the Holidays and everyone could have a stocking stuffer.
