Black screen.

Not true. Looking at mine now....always has low power display of time and notification like this

My watch has a smart owner. It cost £20, tells the time really well and the battery lasts 3 years. What the hell are you all doing buying this tat ????

What do those idiots at Cartier, Longines and Omega know?
I mean, really. Who ever heard of a non-round watch face?

I have to say these android watches look better in picture but when I see a video it looks much worse.

Man I wish the Apple Watch had a round face.

The square might be better for computer information, but it looks so uninspired and dorky.

So you find the same shape that has been used for hundreds of years inspiring?

So far Android wear has not taken off. They've not really found the user experience/design that has struck a chord with the consumers
I think smart watches as a whole have not gone mainstream, regardless it's from Apple or otherwise - the fad is dead, even.

Apple is the one difference - they seemed to have an amazing Christmas season. I think smart watches are a solution looking for a problem. Apple made some insightful decisions with the Apple watch by making it an extension of the iPhone. Criticized by that decision by many, it seems that they may have come on a combination of hardware, software and services that mesh well for many people

Throwing a bunch of features in just because and calling it a smart watch has not worked, at least yet, so I give Apple credit, even though I was one of them who questioned the idea of making the AW an extension of the iPhone

I've got a Samsung Gear S3.

It is without a doubt the best looking smartwatch on the market and hardware-wise, easily as good as the Apple Watch in most respects. It's not gigantic like this chunky monkey LG yet the battery life is very good.

The one problem is lack of app support. Tizen is fine but they barely have any apps. It's bizarre. That's where Apple and Android Wear 2.0 are far ahead.

But there will be much nicer Android watches coming out in 2017 than these LG ones.

Until tiny processors and batteries become super efficient, these smartwatches will always serve as an extension.
A nice to have, but not a must have.

As you say, adding features that no one really needs is mostly marketing spin to help with sales. That said, the pivot away from fashion and towards health and fitness perhaps justifies calling it a 'smartwatch'.

I just wish they would be even more focused. Drop 3rd party apps entirely and just make it an amazing stand alone fitness device. What happened to the Apple of old, where it does a few things really really well? Instead it's all about the monetization of apps. We already have the iPhone for that.

Frankly, I'd be really surprised if Apple EVER came out with a round face.

They believe in their design process and new models will change slightly (thinner and perhaps tapered). Not unlike how the iMac has morphed over the last decade (G4 iMac was a shift as technology evolved from CRT to LCD).

They've done a lot of study into form factor efficiency and arrived at the current rectangle.
I suspect, at some point, the bezel will eventually be reduced to make greater use of the entire screen.

For me the apple watch has been the move unused apple product. It has sat there in my drawer for almost 8 months already.
Right now smart watches just dont do it for me. I found it to actually be distracting.

does it vibrate when you get a message? can you track your sleep? can it be used as a silent alarm? can you use it to pay for stuff?

Years ago people said, who needs a smart phone.... sure, wear your $20 watch, use your mobile phone that cost $5.... to receive a text message "the 80's called and wants you back!"

Except hella thick and bad UI

Have you actually worn an AW? It's not thick or bulky at all. It's one the most comfortable watches I've ever worn.

I also don't understand the watches have to be round arguments This reminds me of BlackBerry people saying that smart phones have to have physical keys when iPhone was released.

Cartier, Omega and Longines offer far more round models than they do non-round models. What they know is the same thing Jony Ive stated once -- that the minute a person wears a product comes the expectation of choice. And more of their customers opt for round options over non-round.

What do those idiots at Cartier, Longines and Omega know?

They actually look a lot better in person. Even taking pictures of my own watches, I've noticed that photos never do them justice.

Yes, there are square watches. They sell at about 1/5th the rate of round watches.

Square grandfather clocks, clock towers, etc have been around much longer. So what? Round is far more popular.

Moreover, round smartwatches are incredibly interesting to people because round displays are so unusual. When the Apple Watch first came out, I got my daughter one. You'd think that people would've been all over it, but they dropped all interest in Apple's device when they saw my LG R.

Let's be honest. If Apple had been the only one with a round always-on display, while everyone else was still using boring 1980s computer terminal shape displays that turned on with a wrist flick, people would be praising Apple for its innovation, and calling square displays Flintstone tech.

Yes. Analog time is round, its ingrained in us.

Why does the Apple pencil look like a pencil ?

Ive's genius is taking the purest form of something and making it a computer. The iPad march to a piece of paper, the Apple Pencil, airpods as just the thing you put into your ear, the keyboard with just the main keys and nothing extra on it, etc, etc.

The purest form of something.

Time is round, watches are round, how do you end up with a rectangular watch ?

I just find the Apple Watch completely uninspiring in its design. The materials are amazing (the ceramic - w o w ), the watches faces are of the highest quality, bands are off the charts. The actual watch itself, specially for a new apple product making its mark, has ZERO personality.

In nearly every Jony Ive new product video pre-apple watch he is wearing a large very expensive chronograph style watch - round was obviously his personal preference. I wonder if he feels miffed that for marketing reasons he has to wear an Apple Watch instead of his collection of fine timepieces

Apple watch looks like a phone on your hand while these look like regular watches.

I feel like this has become how some people judge smartwatches.

"I know nothing about this smartwatch, but man it looks like a regular watch, so it must be good!"

Isn't the quote from Apple about round smartwatches actually a Jony Ive quote, though?

“When a huge part of the function is lists, a circle doesn’t make any sense.”

Like Jobs said, design is how it works. Traditional watches and smartwatches do different things, hence the designs are different.

Thats a good quote. When the Apple Watch first came out and it was muddled mess they though the focus was going to be lists, sure, do a rectangle.

Now what is the focus of the watch ? Look at the Apple Watch page :
http://www.apple.com/watch/

How many lists do you see ?

Here is the WatchOS page
http://www.apple.com/watchos/

You could make an argument for the messages list but I don't think it would be a disaster with a round or even oval face.

So the main point of contention would be the complications in the corner of the watch. Put them *inside* the circle, like traditional watches have now.

It not just to hang on the old ways. There is a reason over the course of hundreds of years the vast majority have settled on a round watch.
