I am referring more to AI features like web page summary, a serious virtual assistant, call screening, that sort of stuff. I just upgraded to the 15 pro and it is like the 14 pro, which was like the 13 pro, which was like the 12 pro and so on. The hardware gets marginally better and it is always top notch, the software just gets bloated with kids stuff, emojis, posters, the useful features are a rarity nowadays. Without mentioning the pletora of bugs and glitches
In order for Apple to be able to do those things, they’d have to be more into ones data than they are now. And, considering how some previously useful features have been removed because it gave Apple too much access to data, at this point if anyone needs more than “I found this on the web” they’re going to need to use something other than iOS.

And, it’s actually the kids stuff that’s the most important! Because, a kid has WAY more years of buying devices than any current adults. :)

Whilst the phone sounds good. I highly doubt Google will keep to their promise of 7 years of software updates. They did not even honour the pixel pass.

Discontinuing a product or service is one thing but "X years" of OS updates is more like a warranty. Even if Google were to discontinue Pixel phones within the next seven years, Android isn't likely going anywhere (depending on how antitrust matters play out in the coming months and years) and therefore I think Google will honor the seven year commitment on whatever phones they are promised (so far just 8 and 8 Pro). At the very least, they would provide something of equivalent value.

The real question might be how watered down or frequent those seven years of updates will be as times goes on. OS updates on older phones, including iPhones, are not typically as expansive as those on newer phones anyway.

Yeah, it’s ONE thing to SAY 7 years. Actually doing it is a different thing entirely.
If they reneged on the promise of 7 years they would set themselves up for massive class action lawsuits. I don't think Google would be willing to go that route. If you promise something and people buy your product based on your promise don't be surprised if you hear the blaring sounds of the ambulance chasers.

If you can afford to pay a fine, it’s simply the cost of doing business.

Plus, given how few people will be getting the pixel pro, how many people will even be around to launch said lawsuit?

Exactly. It’s the kind of thing where they know that if they don’t do it, it absolutely WON’T be hundreds of millions of people in a class action. They likely already know have a good idea of how many folks are likely to maintain their first purchased phones and are counting on being able to get most of those to upgrade with successive iterations.

If no one is using a Pixel 8 in 5 years, then they can EOL it.

At least in the UK they are really going hard on the advertising of these phones, seen so many adverts for them. Don’t remember past Pixels models getting this level of advertising.

There's part of the problem when companies like Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft become too big, wealthy and powerful. They can get away with things other companies can't because they can afford to pay large fines that could or nearly could put other companies trying to compete out of business.

Played around with the Pixel 8 Pro at Best Buy today.

It’s definitely a LOT better than the 7 Pro, just feels much better to hold and that flat screen is a major plus.

Took some pics comparing photos of it and my 15 Pro. I have to say, Apple worked their magic because my 15 Pro had much better dynamic range. Highlights were retained a lot better than the Pixel 8 Pro. What the 8 Pro did better though is retain more details in the shadows, wished Apple would time down the contrast a bit and allow more light in the shadows.

Speakers were also much better than the 7 Pro, nowhere near my 15 Pro’s though.

Overall it’s a very nice device, I’ll wait for the reviews to come out before deciding if I want to pick one up as a secondary phone 👌

I have been using a Pixel 6a for 6 months as a stop gap until my 15PM arrives. For £300 it has been a great little phone with a surprisingly good camera, but I couldn't bring myself to pay £900 plus for an Android phone.

Not if you factor in resale value. The iPhone will work out cheaper.

Yeah that's true I forgot about that since I only but used or if new then it's a midrange android that doesn't lose much value. Looking at resale values on eBay in the UK of the 2021 13 Pro Max and Pixel 6 Pro, if you bought them new and sold them now the iPhone would've cost you about £550 and the Pixel £600.
