All the Google scoffing here (which I totally get) doesn't make Nord or ExpressVPN or whomever else any less of a honey pot. Where you place your trust is personal.

Google wants to be the only one to own your data. Why give your data to everyone, when Google can select who to sell it to.
Speaking as an infosec professional: you’d be a downright FOOL to use this. We purged Chrome at work after it came out that it is, in actuality, spyware. Don’t trust this crap from google. It’s designed to trick those non tech savvy but privacy concerned individuals.

Do your homework/research on VPN providers. There are some who are trustworthy. Especially the ones who have undergone an audit of their service. ProtonVPN leads the pack in privacy as per Ernest Young auditors reports.

Serious question, is Google also releasing this worldwide? China & Russia for example? Apple catches hell on MacRumors for complying with local laws. Is Google held to a different standard?
