Is this free? If it’s not, then why wouldn’t I just pay another VPN service?
Because VPN does something different. There is no way for the remote server and web page to know who is visiting the website. And Apple doesn't know what website you are visiting because there are two servers, unlike a VPN where there is one.

VPN can pretend your location is elsewhere, so you can watch Amazon France if you want. You can't do that kind of thing with this.

So the real answer is, if you pay anything for iCloud, then yes it is free. So use this and a VPN. They do different things.

More protection from hackers?
do the people in marketing even know what hacking is?

Boring 🥱
Google Fi and VPN is a USofA-only story. Not relevant to the rest of the world.
i know, right? wtaf?
an American website dedicated to an American company publishes an article about a relevant American company that markets a product for — good lord — American consumers?!??
/s

yet another example of more ungracious/jealous anti-Americanism, while not uncommon among needlessly resentful canucks, certainly par for the course on MR.

Boring, indeed.

Google and VPN

Is like drinking beer while eating watermelon - recipe for diarrhea.

And to think so many will fall for this.... sigh....
I find it equally ironic. Why would you trust the company you are trying to get away from with keeping your data away from itself.

Their VPN will more likely serve as a funnel to make it easier to collect and sell your data under the guise of “better user experience”.

Sigh, the VPN service requires you use their cell phone service. They don't offer the VPN as a standalone feature.

Speaking as an infosec professional: you’d be a downright FOOL to use this. We purged Chrome at work after it came out that it is, in actuality, spyware. Don’t trust this crap from google. It’s designed to trick those non tech savvy but privacy concerned individuals.
Do you think our IT folks missed something then? How are we allowed to use Chrome when everything we do must be DFARS compliant?

Well technically a VPN sees everything that passes through it. It could be used to filter out known sites and domains that have malware and social engineering stuffs.

So, when I travel, I use Tunnelbear to connect at a public hotspot (when I have bad cell)…

private relay does NOT help in this instance correct?

thos is really the nitty gritty (great band) that I haven’t figured out yet; even after watching they keynote and reading some other articles…

Remember, a VPN puts you on their network. It's only private if you operate the VPN.

At Google, YOU are their product.
