Really? AdGuard for Safari slows the browser down to a crawl, even with minimal filter lists selected. It's a bulky, bloated piece of software. Wipr is my preferred ad blocker on Safari, though I wish it allowed custom rules.
Do you use something to block ads in YouTube? Wipr doesn't do it, AFAIK.

My Mac is fast enough for this. For YouTube and other heavy Google apps, I use Chrome with uBO.

At least google is free to make these optimizations on macOS, unlike iOS/iPadOS where it’s forced to use WebKit.

Do you use it on mobile? AdGuard works very well even on older devices. The only difference is filter update time being much longer on older devices. The oldest device I have is iPad Pro 10.5 (gen 2 iPP on A10X). It works well.

For YouTube, I use uYouPlus. You can find it on GitHub for sideloading.

And Safari Version 16.5 (18615.2.5.11.2) still feels snappier. Had to say it. :D

Speedometer2 scores
Safari Version 16.5 with M1 24" iMac using MacOS 13.4 beta 2 = 368
Firefox 112 same platform/OS = 276
sup ! just letting you know that i've disabled dark mode extension in safari and speeds are now much better

i've tried disabling all extensions actually, and i get the same score in both safari and chrome : 350

macbook air m1 16gb

i have a 2019 2.4GHz 8 core i9 - old slow machine compared to apple silicon. I have 2Gbps symmetric fiber, limited by 1Gbps Ethernet to this computer - so my network's not an issue.

The only takeaway is that safari scores well, but takes much longer if you have extensions enabled. I have a ton of adblock extensions.
In my experience, Safari is primarily optimized for the most basic, lowest common denominator web browsing behavior.

Adding advanced features, like extensions, as you mentioned, or any resource intensive web applications (like those used for business), it really struggles.

I have to run in Chrome for business web apps and use Safari for more consumer level just browsing type websites (like MacRunors).

Using Chrome on my MacBook Pro M1 and when I click update it says "Chrome is Out of Date" and requires me to reinstall it. Anybody know how to circumvent this and update without having to reinstall the browser?

The best solution would be to erase Chrome and install Firefox instead. Forget Chrome. It's a good example of bloatware...
