I don't care what optimizations Google makes, I am not switching from FireFox.

I too like to dig my heels in when it comes to anything Google

I've had hangs for months on Safari and finally thought to disable private relay. Night n day better
How do you do that?
Safari has sucked ever since Ventura. One really annoying thing is that many times using facebook I can't scroll down the page until I refresh it

Two things make the speedometer2 benchmark score a lot higher, first is your ISP connection it’s ~480 Mbps for me, second is how fast is your single core score does, M1 SoC performs in that regard quite well.
Connection speed has nothing to do with the cpu tests. Speedometer downloads all assets needed for the test before the test begins, you’d get the same results on a 56k modem, it would just take forever for the test to start.

The Web giveth and the Web taketh away. Private Relay does a good job of protecting you from snoopers but it does come at a cost. Each page request goes through an intermediary, adding an extra hop to your web journey. If, for any reason, the private relay servers go on a go slow, so will you.

Personally, it works fast enough for me almost all the time, and I appreciate the additional privacy layer.

The best thing I did for speed issues was to install a decent content blocker (Wipr in my case). Pages load so much faster without all the advertising crud. It’s fairly shocking how slow and bad the web looks with the content blocker disabled.

Alright here are some comments found online.

Just bought a MacBook Air M1 and did the Speedometer2.0 benchmark, got around 220. Then did the same benchmark on my desktop with RTX 3090 / 5900 X / 64 GB Ram and got a score of 170.

Which shows Apple silicon is 30% faster than one of the fastest desktop CPU's when it comes to browsing the internet. How is this even possible?

Just feels weird, got a huge case and huge CPU cooling block. M1 Air doesn't even have a FAN! And was not connected to a power supply....

So I am talking about what I observe getting way higher score I see repeat with still higher results reported by forum users using the latest M2 Max MBP then my M1 Max MBP. Obviously there is something related to the use of AS platform and how high the Speedometer2 score goes on both y examples.

another observation same link

I checked it a bit. Speedbench is all about responsiveness of web pages so there are a lot of factor in between. You are dependant of the efficiency of the web browser, and also of the tweaking of the OS. For example, Apple favorites the responsiveness above all (which means that visual applications are favorised by the ressources attributions) whereas for windows I don't know. In my opinions, speedbench would be more useful to compare browsers on the same PC than accross different PC, different OS and different browser

So a very fast low latency ISP connection does affect the scoring slightly, also the Ventura OS more optimized over time has now has increased the score to be higher more so. So less of a hardware scoring stat as you commented on. ;)

Chrome isn't allowed to be installed! Period. In fact, no Google apps are allowed on any Mac in the house. Safari is first, followed by Brave, Opera, Firefox and Orion at present. I have no idea why anyone would even allow Chrome to be installed. No thank you to that well known spyware.

Isn't Opera Chinese spyware?

I originally thought that as well but I don't have any evidence for that assumption. It is still headquartered in Norway, last time I checked. It seems to send the least amount of data back home compared to other browsers and with the purpose I am using it for, I don't care either way. Safari is my main all day, with Brave taking care of all things Google, Facebook etc. for any business related things. Opera and the others are spare browsers for when doing web work or checking if something works or not. Plus, on the older Mac, it is the only browser that still supports macOS 10.11.

Even if Google speeds up Chrome, why anyone would use it with so many other good, PRIVACY-FOCUSED chromium browsers on the market is beyond me.

I'd still use Chrome even if they announced it was slower! Although Safari does look a bit nicer, it's missing the ability to have seperate profiles - something I personally can't work without now.

i have no issues with safari.
Sometimes I try to go back to Safari but Chrome runs basically everywhere so I'm more used to it and it's much easier to sync stuff.
Also more extensions.
But I think my deal breaker is Safari has no icons in the favourite bar 😁

I've done extensive energy efficiency testing lately (including Chrome they just released). For some people, sheer bench performance is key, but for me its not frying my lap and having a 100 hour battery life. It seems that Chrome gets its performance by reserving and hoarding as much real estate as possible on your laptop. M1 Pro is just so good at it that you don't notice the usage.

I'll be releasing full findings soon, but for me there is a clear winner.
