I thought Android was open source? What does Google have to gain from there being more Android devices other than more usage data and more integrated/easier ad placement? Isn't that what they make their money off of? It seems to me Android is the ideal way for them to get data and sell ads more effectively, but they would still want that opportunity from every other mobile platform as well. Their goal is more data mining and ad sales, they aren't interested in dominating the smartphone market.

This guy said it best...

Hope you don't get a call while...

...your relying on those directions. On VZ, if you are relying on Google to get your directions and you get a call, you have to close out of the ap to take the call. VZ doesn't offer the ability to receive a call while being online (3G or wifi).

It might take some time until it gets to the iPhone, but the wait will be worth it.

i like it.. (when it comes to the iphone)

Yeah but will it be just as good? Not sure if it's my phone or the iPhone gps. Tom Tom for example, is spot in, with thebtom Tom app on the iPhone you get messages like "poor gps signal" to being about 3-5 seconds behind on where you really are. I know I can't be alone in saying it wouldn't redirect or work fast enough and you end up passing the steet, or is it due to my phone not being the 3GS vs older 3G.

Should be quite a few options when I come up reduced price in January for me or dump AT&T and use the current iPhone somewhere else and get another smart phone. Of course I use my dates, iCal all the time so it should be fine.

There isnalao some fact that the kit has a louder speaker and GPS booster but it's really going to come down to price, iCal, GPS, and flash. As I want to have the abilty, which I do, to watch shows without jailbreaking.
Another few factors are teethering which I can do and have done it once or twice bust more importantly, pricing on data plans and text. Have gv mobile account and listed the number on AT&Ts
A list so all
my calls are free but not sure if the text is. Has to be a way to drop
texting and use the gv mobile. Or does it show upmas texting? Anyone know. I also noticed in my gv google accounts I have three invites I can awns to people. Google are so on the ball. I wish them luck and hope to oneday see their OS work as well as Suns looking glass OS where a lot of leopard ideas come from. Google project looking glass sun. Yhen watch the video
it goes to a live demo about 1:44 in or so.

Peace.

3G coverage is getting better worldwide, but think about trips in the countryside or outside cities where there are plenty of areas with low or no signal, even with good network operators.
You might have to get a detour and unable to download the required data, which would suck badly.
Also, data connection is still a no-go abroad so forget about renting a car and use your navigation device on your next holiday trip.
In 10 years who knows, but today I think at least in navigation, apps which include maps are the only way to go.
That's why you rent a GPS from the rental company for dirt cheap. Even if you wanted to use your Garmin you'd have to buy the European maps (assuming you're not from Europe) which cost a ton. I don't see that as a problem honestly.

Android is open source, Google Maps is not.
Yep, that's the key. This isn't really "free". Google's web page for this says Google Maps Navigation (beta) "is part of Google Maps for mobile and is available for phones with Android 2.0."

Android licensees pay for Google Maps as part of the license. Google Maps is not open source either.

It doesn't really matter --- because your phone already downloaded the next 5-10 minutes of the maps. The A-GPS will continue to work with the cached maps.

Um, so doesn't it kinda matter if your phone call is longer than 5-10 minutes?

Hmm, Im liking the driod OS, and that motorola. Apple better up its game on the next update or they will be dead in the water. Im still not a fan of the way apple since its initial iphone launch has been slightly behind the competition with its tech specs, and uses its wow factor to sell their phones.

Greed is Good, Greed Clarifies

Nothing is free. Neither will Google-Positioning-System.
Text Advertisements will follow to pay for it, or maybe virtual sign boards... or some other formation of ad revenue. Perhaps shop owners can pay for virtual signage or pop-ups... who knows... But someone will.

By "wow factor" I assume you mean "better software?"

The economic model is already in place. Just like Google on the web, when you do a voice query for "Gas Station" or "Restaurant". . . guess which gas station or restaurant is probably going to be at the top of the listing? ;)

Like the "University of Wales and Swansea", which has never gone by that name, and I submitted a correction for years ago, and still is labelled as such?

(It was formerly known as "University of Wales, Swansea", so presumably some overly-clever software thought it was a good idea to replace the comma with the word "and" -- now though it goes by the simpler name of "Swansea University".)

And I am still waiting for a correction to the spelling of my street - but then, it's only been one week since I reported the error to Google Maps.

The Droid can do 6 apps at a time. So you can get a call, and still have the GPS work. According to their site, you can take a call while being online and checking e-mail.

Amazing Start. Can't wait to see what this grows into!

I'm from Ottawa Canada and was visiting Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I had a rental, but brought my own Garmin Nüvi with me. The freeway back to our hotel was backed up as far as we could see and I rerouted off the highway and onto local roads. What we got, instead of a headache in traffic, was an incredibly scenic drive through orange groves – the first time I'd ever seen oranges in trees. I would never go back to being without a GPS in my car.

I think what Google has done here is incredible. The best part for me is that despite an amazing offering, I can see room for major improvement. Google's really got the hooks to be leader here. I'm excited for faster mobile internet (4G or whatever is coming down the road). I'm excited for faster processors that will have smoother scrolling as I drive. I'm excited for augmented reality being more of a reality and being overlaid on windshields making it safer (and WAY cooler) to drive and not having to look down at a screen. The actual pictures of my next turn and destination are neat, though I'd have to use them to see how much that helps vs. distracts me. The voice commands are an awesome step that I'm sure is going to change all these devices going forward

I really hope Apple's recent acquisition of that mapping company leads to more things like this. As much as I love my Garmin, and as much as Google's turn-by-turn excites me, I know I'd always rather use something from Apple (my absolute favourite company). I hope that even when Steve Jobs retires, someone has the foresight and respect for the company culture to continue being absolutely draconian with all of their products' software, hardware, and industrial design.

Google's making some mighty big moves with their cell phone and other partners. Windows 7 is awesome. Apple's stuff is still amazing. I love the way all of this is going. Cheers to the future!

Get ready for the software patent trolling to begin. Garmin and Magellan must own many software patents for using map/GPS data on a mobile device or via a cloud. If they start to lose market share to Google (and I'm not sure how they can compete with free) they will probably take the battle to court like many other "last buggy whip makers".

Honestly if the hardware GPS makers want to survive they should start producing systems to build into the glass of a windshield. The technology is there already to have roll up translucent screens imbedded in glass. I think I read about it in Wired a few years ago.

Or they could work on making GPS built into cars more affordable for the masses. $2500 for a built in GPS system in many cars is just ridiculous, however, even if I like using GPS on my phone, I can see a use for having a built-in system if it was reasonably priced. Of course, the high price of built-in GPS systems could partly come from the auto industry gouging on options..

I thought CDMA couldn't handle simultaneous voice and data, similar to EDGE?

Did you see the video on engadget? It appears to work well!

In a demo, everything always seem to work well... (except a Windows demo because of its totally unpredictable behavior:D)
