Really? The i5 is older than the A5. You all were gripping when the mini and the 13" rMBP came out. I believe it has the same dated i5.

You are confused here. "5" in A5 designates 5th generation. This number increases with every new generation of Apple processors. "5" in i5 has nothing to do with processor generations. Intel uses 3, 5, and 7 similarly to how BMW uses them. They indicate the place of the processor in the power scale. There are tons of versions of i5 models. In Pixel, Google uses the latest one.

i just feel bad for those 5 people that will buy it only to realize that it only works with a internet connection (if im not mistaken) and is basically a browser with a "useless" screen and i5 that u cant even take advantage of and no way to save anything of value :(

You are mistaken. It will work without an internet connection. The Google Apps have offline versions that Chromebooks can download. I think they are toned down, but yes Chrombooks have a solution for when you are in an airplane and cut off from the internet.

I also suspect that Chrome OS is going to get beefier as this is an impressive display of support by Google for it.

I see this as something closer to a concept car that you can buy. It is a proof of concept, an inspiration, and finally something that Google execs can carry around and look both cool and supportive of their brand. It is also a challenge against Apple that there will be some competition in the high end market. Sure, not by this computer. But if the next one is $1,000. And the one after that is $800. Well then, Apple might start feeling a little heat.

How is a widescreen not good for working on?

It's short, why have a screen cut in half when you can have more height? It doesn't mean it has to be any less wide, just add more real estate to the top and make it a 5:4 ratio rather than 16:10.

We are all just used to widescreen due to cinema, but in I like taller screens because web pages are tall, not wide.

I knew Google had something good... and is the pot they smoke!

1300-1450?!?!? early April fools?

According to their ad, its great for being to touch an exploding planet, but I guess that is it. Pass.

People criticizing Pixelor its price are misguided

It is a much better specced machine than MBA and deserves this price. And it's a premium model. Unlike the case with OS/X, Chrome books offer wide range of models: from $300 to $1200. Granted most Chrome book buyers will opt for cheaper models but if someone (Paris Hilton?) wants a premium Chrome book companion to her $10,000 Android phone (Vertu) she will be able to get one. It looks like some people have been in the Apple ecosystem for too long to understand the concept of choice.

Oh, and I though you'd have to rename the pixels to points, define their size as 0.5x0.5px and that four of them are physically as large as one pixel. But downscaling should work, too.

Okay, first off, explain to me exactly what you're talking about here. Webpages? They upscale on the retina enabled devices, and could just as easily downscale for lower resolution devices.

It's not a big deal. All that stuff is determined by whoever is designing the webpage.

The amount of sneer, ignorance, and sheer google () hatred on the first few pages of this thread is staggering. It's also highly embarrassing to the posters and upvoters, and highly ironic.

…

Wake up and the smell the coffee, at the same time that apple has been asleep on the wheel, going from one hardware fiasco to a software fiasco, and under delivering in most everything, and while some less than insightful people here are dissing google, google are the ones doing what apple as supposed to be doing instead: Taking risks, innovating, pushing computing even further in the future (be it cloud, touch on notebooks, aspect ratios, even higher hidpi screens), and DISRUPTING. Hell, yeah, a cloud computer with a secure forward looking os, the best retina on the market, doubling as touch screen with fused glass, in gorgeous 3:2 ratio, and priced lower than the staler than stale bread non touch, non retina air.

nice one larry!

That's like saying a scooter engine is better than a V6 because it's newer.

While google is doing what apple was ONCE famous for, releasing a device ahead of it's time, taking risks, going with something disruptive they get one moronic comment after the other from posters here.

Now let's do a little reality check on what apple has been up to the past year or so under shopkeeper Cook's infinitely wise guidance:

Releasing a premium computer that sucks at everything except cloud computing at a time when cloud computing isn't mature enough to make it viable is stupid. I give Google props for Glass but not this.

Only way this isn't stupid is if they have some Chrome OS revolution they're about to unleash that will change everything. But this is a company that can't even figure out how to make money off Android so I doubt it

Fair enough but not everyone works in web pages.

I like widescreens for working on because I need to fit many things side by side, I understand there should maybe more options for people that want longer displays instead of wider.

Sticking such a high res screen on a web browser just seems bonkers still.

Really? The i5 is older than the A5..

i5 is a brand label. Sort of like MBA or MBP or Mac Mini. The specific instances are newer than the brand label.

From Google's spec page

" ... CPU
Intel® Core™ i5 Processor (Dual Core 1.8GHz)
Intel® HD Graphics 4000 (Integrated) ... "
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromebook_pixel_wifi

Intel HD 4000 graphics didn't come out until Ivy Bridge processors showed up in April 2012. Apple's initial A5 instance showed up in March 2011. Pragmatically a full year earlier.

P.S. Probably one of the newer lower TDP variants (13W) like this one introduced 1Q '13

Google, Start Your Copiers

Google slavishly copied both the look and feel of Apple's product AND the look and tone of Apple's ads. Wow.

In what way is the spec "MUCH BETTER" than a macbook air other than the display?

What the heck is this crap? Is that a fake Jonathan Ive?

Google has stolen Microsoft's Copier Machine.

Yes, Google copied future version of MacBook which eventually will come out with a touch screen and without a hard drive. Apple would have done it by now, but they do not have an OS for that. They did make everything possible to screw up file systems in iOS and OS/X though so it's just a matter of time when your MacBook with rely solely on iCloud (all 50GB of it for a high monthly fee).

3 YEARS OF 1TB STORAGE????!?!?!

For that price, they should be offering WAYY more with lifetime support. You would be bonkers to buy this.

Everyone here trying to rip google apart, do you think you can take your heads out of your macs and realize what apple has actually been doing the past year or so?
Aaaaarrrrggg! For the LAST time, the negative actions of one party DO NOT EXCUSE the negative actions of another.

Seriously, if this concept escapes you (as it seems to be the lynchpin of your rant), it's time for a remedial education review.

Google sucks plenty all on their own. If Apple is the most terrible company on earth, Google still sucks hard and vigorously. So get over it fandroid, it's just a pre-school looking green robot stamped on contrarian hype. What's next for Poodle? 'Anti-jock' for prom night? Humiliation erotica tablet? Tim Cook voodoo doll?
