Too late.
I switched to DuckDuckGo because of the Dark Mode, and got more privacy features as a bonus.

I am not a tech professional so I don't understand why the hell is taking months to test something with a black background anyway? Same with other apps like facebook etc...
Because all text is in black for the most part, you have to reverse that. It's kind of obvious.

Dark mode sounds easier than it is.
White is the default background, that is used for everything almost.
Once you switch that to black you have to double check if each and every element and color doesnt "disappear" or is hard to read.

And the second difficult thing is that dark mode is not uniform or homogenous throughout the internet.
How many times do you expect , you will be greeted by subsequent dark mode website , when you click on a search result link on the black google site?

The alternating between black and full white can be quite inconvenient.
another example: you use a reddit app in darkmode and you scroll through some memes in the middle of the night when you are in bed...... And then you see some people post memes from twitter (as screenshots) with white background....

Dark mode has a long way to go. Its not a simple switch. Especially as long as there isnt some AI solution to "defuse" those white background .jpgs and stuff.
And even if those image files have transparent backgrounds. most of the time you will see a hideous white outline / contour whatever you call it.

And then of course you need to invert dark colors. Most obvious one is black. For example if you have some sort of Graph in black color, black arrows, lines and text in an image.
Like I said. Mostly everything is designed with a white background in mind.

Apple is a master of dim gray text on black backgrounds

What’s the big deal, DuckDuckGo has had it for a while and can swap its light/dark themes to match overall theme preferences on our devices. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why are companies struggling with dark mode so much lol? My Facebook only got it in the last few months and it constantly resets and I have to change my phone to light mode then back to dark mode just to re enable facebook, and my iPad doesn’t even get dark mode i unless I use browser lol. It’s so stupid.

Wow...

A dark mode will definitely get me to switch from my non-spying, privacy-respecting, non-evil search and mapping engine. I have been waiting for this so I can turn stupid.

I don't think there's technical reason for that. I guess it is mostly due to procedures within the company or just the company having different priorities (although all should really do prioritise Dark Mode).

Even better. Just respect a user's web browser settings and use its configured colors (and fonts, for that matter), without regard to whatever "mode" the user's desktop is running.

If I want to configure my browser to display green text on a pink background, then Google should just use it. It's not their job to force their opinion about what looks good on the rest of the world. If you think my configuration is ugly, you don't have to look at it.

I guess Google wants to be really sure that Dark Mode doesn't negatively affect the frequency of paid search results being clicked.

And who knows... human behaviour is often unexplainable, deeply irrational and weird.

Secondly I think and hope Google will want to know how people find the experience over all (e.g. white text on a dark background is well known to make reading harder).
Ha! It’s also simple to make it an option. “Click,” look, dark mode! “Click,” look, light mode again! I guess they need several more months of field testing for something as complicated as that.

Like I said. Mostly everything is designed with a white background in mind.

Just like it was when we used CRTs and the default refresh rate was 60 Hz, which also strained our eyes.

There's a good article explaining how bad it can be for our health to not care about this and stuff like bias lightning:

The problem with forced dark mode (from browser extensions) is that many sites are designed in a way that if you apply this change you break things (not all of them, of course). Pictures start disappearing, text may be hidden. Even CAPTCHA I noticed it could break.

People have been complaining about the insistence of putting white background for websites since the 1990's. Believe me when I say this complaint is so old that predates internet mass use. Apple, Google and others took 3 decades to discover that grass is green, the skies are blue, and fire is hot...

Apple has put dark mode for everything, except that dreadful Safari browser. So I had to use Firefox, which has true dark mode, for my iPAD. But they should never bother about this if these websites were not developed by ignorant and lazy people.

How about a system dark mode for the YouTube app. 🙄🤦‍♂️

...YouTube already has a dark mode in Windows and iOS??!

....Google has had a dark mode for months??!

Such useless search anyway, always polluted with amazon and ebay results, stupid because it includes and prioritises USA companies in results when it is set and told to search only Australia, news google is so dumb it repeats exactly the same articles 3 times, many of them useless because of subscription, so dumb it thinks when i click local news is always Sydney when my IP is on the other side of the country only gives me Melbourne as other choice and need an account to change to something else.
duckduckgo have dark for years, google are slow learners.
Maybe you need to change your VPN address 🤣

Oh wow. I had this feature for over a month on my iPad and iPhone--thinking the dark mode extension on my Mac glitched google across my devices.

Google's ad revenue is $146 Billion. If they promise advertisers that their marketing will be placed on a white background you best believe changing to a black backdrop is more than 'just' a simple change.

Seriously Google why does this take so long to implement? But tbh I'm happy with duckduckgo.

Yes, this always struck me as funny. Is there some big technological leap about a black background that requires months of field testing? Lol!

Probably has to do with usability. A drastic change like this is most definitely going to have an impact in how people look at the content. Which means revenue from ads might be affected by a change like this.

"Dark Mode" that is a classic move from the company that has been there for a long long time! DuckDuckGo for me for the last 6 months as I striped free of gmail (protonmail) Chrome (Safari and FF) and anything related to Google. Now if I can just find a good alternative to YouTube TV.....
