this is a great idea..., but i wish i could disable it anytime I WANT.

I dont want google and my friends to know where i am all the time!

You don't have to worry about that! Unless you are RUNNING the app it won't do squat.

I just thought of one use. Hide a mobile phone in your car when you leave it parked so if it is stolen you can just tell the Police where it is! In fact manufacturers could build the feature into the car. The app could be activated when you ring it on a certain number.

Actually, if they made the functionality code lockable (so you could turn the feature on an off on the phone by way of using a keycode) you could track a stolen mobile phone too.

I don't think this is such a good idea. You would for sure have people stalking you then. Why do you need to know where someone else is in the first place? If you really need to know, just call them. It's not like they wouldn't have their phone with them... They would have to have it to use this app. And calling someone is not only a feature for the iPhone, it works on all phones.

Exactly. So let's sum it up:

1) Google knows what sites you visit
2) Google knows who emails you and who you email
3) Google knows who your friends and family are
4) Google knows WHERE you and your friends are
5) Google knows ALL!

Welcome to planet Google!

6. Google caved to China and complied with Internet censorship laws.
7. Google caved to Cheney and removed his house from Google Earth.
8. Google caved to the Pentagon and removed maps of streets near military bases.

Creepy creepy creepy! I don't mind my friends knowing where I've been but I don't like the idea of them knowing where I am. x_x

Def something I won't be opting into.

Google's slogan makes sense now.

Don't be evil! (or we will find you and reprogram you)

7. Google caved to Cheney and removed his house from Google Earth.
8. Google caved to the Pentagon and removed maps of streets near military bases.

7. The US Vice Presidential Residence is part of a United States naval installation. As such, it is subject to protection upon request under various statutes concerning active military installations. Also, it wasn't removed, but blurred. This was common practice for many government and military installations from the early days of public satellite imagery. Many images remain blurred; there are many examples of content that is completely removed.

8. Google removed Street View images on active military installations, not near. It also wasn't maps of streets, it was Street View.

I think I will use it. I think my friends will use it.
With Latitude we no longer have to constantly call or txt friends that are (always) on the way to us. We know where he is haha!

Opening this up a bit:

What other (nice) possibilities does this potentially bring? Some i can think of:

- If you had it linked with contacts, you could do a route to contact, to meet up.
- If it did a within x distance, display, in a sonar way - see who's around.
- Be a way to give updates to people in terms of estimated time of arrival for an event - (the partner is coming back from work, so time to put the tea/kettle on.)
- Way of seeing where an event is - or a gathering. Or creating a flash mob

And one i'm not sure Google's taken up yet, but might be possible with Google and also open source mapping - using the GPS to map out unmapped areas of the world. Or map general areas for other uses.

What's Apple's take on Sat Nav is my thoughts - Garmin's made its move.

Sorry, blurred. Funny how it cleared up after Biden moved in.

According to InformationWeek, it is near:

Exactly. I don't know why this bunching so many panties. This looks like a fun app! You can find out where your buds are or your wife/husband/significant other is. That's neat. We have to stop being so paranoid about this.

I just wonder if this is going to run in the background. Seems to me that if this is going to be any good, it should run in the background. This will take care of having push to serve us our IMs as it will always be on. IM without push or having it run in the background isn't so good. With Google's sway, I believe Apple would probably let this run in the background. We would need a new firmware though. Or, I wonder if 2.2.1 had something to do with this as it doesn't seem to do anything else.

Maybe this supports the notion of the next iPhone OS update to allow background tasks.

Sounds very reasonable to me. They did mention that Apple was only considering 1 or 2 apps to be running in the background. This may be one of them.

You don't have to worry about that! Unless you are RUNNING the app it won't do squat.

This is assuming it isn't allowed to run in the background. The GPS that we have now does run in the background. It'll be interesting. And even if it is running in the background, you have to opt-in for this service.

Just to clarify for the people whining about not wanting to be tracked:

If you're cheating on your wife/gf/partner, this app is NOT for you.

If you're out getting another 1/8th from your dealer, this app is NOT for you.

If you're out in your car token up in a dark parking lot, yep you guessed it this app is NOT for you either.

If you're out tagging up peoples properties.. yep you're right.. this app is NOT for you.

If you're out committing crimes or planning anything, this app is NOT for you.

If you're citing "privacy" concerns... see above.

If you're afraid of google/government tracking your "every movement", get 2 cans and a piece of string..

To those legit users that actually find this app handy in keeping up with their friends around em..

Welcome (very soon)..

Welcome (very soon)..

That's an unfair assessment/accusation.
What if I just don't like big brother watching me all the time ?

What if I'm buying a gift for my 20th wedding anniversary and I don't want the wife to know I'm at a Zales store ?

Then obviously something shady is going on that you'd rather not get called on and my assessment I'm sure is around the ~80% mark on being dead on. I think a majority of the people that don't want to be found wont use this app and that's it, be it a fairly wide assessment on the "why factors".

As I said then don't download the app.. then we wont have any "whoops" factors with the Mrs.

Could be rejected by Apple

I got a bad feeling Apple would reject this app, for being competitor to iPhone's Map.app program.

Because I don't like big brother watching all the time I'm doing something shady?

Get real..

I don't like cameras at stoplights either but I have no outstanding tickets and don't speed.
