That's an unfair assessment/accusation.
What if I just don't like big brother watching me all the time ?

What if I'm buying a gift for my 20th wedding anniversary and I don't want the wife to know I'm at a Zales store ?

Ok you know what lets keep this going so what reason would you NOT want big brother watching you then? Not sure if I can imagine a big van rolling up and kidnapping you or not..

What are the reasons that people don't want the government or heck even google watching them?

And what about GM vehicles with OnStar, phones with build in GPS that can be remotely turned on in case of an emergency?

Because I don't like big brother watching all the time I'm doing something shady?

Get real..

I don't like cameras at stoplights either but I have no outstanding tickets and don't speed.

sheesh, if you don't like it don't install it. gosh...the whining!

You know there's got to be a more legit reason then I simply don't like cameras watching me at stop lights (aren't they merely there for traffic/your safety?). As I said there has to be something from driving over the speed limits, running reds, doing something that otherwise you wouldn't want your face nor vehicle pasted on a computer screen.. no matter how innocent the violation is.

I'm not trying to peg you out of this group but there's always a motive and reason why people don't want to be "tracked". I'm merely here to provide a different perspective other then WEEEE WE'RE GETTING GOGGLE LATITIDE.. BOOOOO!

what are you arguing about?

those people who don't care about beeing tracked wherever they are will use it.

those who don't like the idea won't.....

you arent discussing about "the-google-problem" in general either.......

so why doing it here?

oh this is awesome one of my girlfriends can figure out where I am and stalk me, yet I can't send a funking PICTURE MESSAGE!!!!

Just another way for Google to deliver ads to you and make more money.

If they know where you are, then they know what your near. Hmm its 95F in Sand Diego today, why dont you take a left and walk one block for a nice cold refreshing drink.

Don't have a device that supports it so wont be using it but not really interested in it in the first place.

Even if it is opt in, should only be a few months before there is a law suit from someone who forgot to opt out and then got caught out..

I don't see anything wrong with goggle or any other advertiser doing their job though it'd get annoying if every 5 seconds another brought to you by google ad appeared on the device.

Heck when ever I go to Denver and its in the 95's downtown I'd love for my phone to be intelligent enough to say hey its hot why not go grab a drink a block on your left I think that'd honestly be pretty killer. Same goes when I'm up here in the mountains and its cold why not stop into any one of these 5 locations for a hot cocoa.

i like it!! i will use it so that my family know where i am. This can lessen their worry about me because i study oversea and seldom back to home.

Just to clarify for the people whining about not wanting to be tracked:

If you're cheating on your wife/gf/partner, this app is NOT for you.

If you're out getting another 1/8th from your dealer, this app is NOT for you.

If you're out in your car token up in a dark parking lot, yep you guessed it this app is NOT for you either.

If you're out tagging up peoples properties.. yep you're right.. this app is NOT for you.

If you're out committing crimes or planning anything, this app is NOT for you.

If you're citing "privacy" concerns... see above.

If you're afraid of google/government tracking your "every movement", get 2 cans and a piece of string..

To those legit users that actually find this app handy in keeping up with their friends around em..

Welcome (very soon)..

Ah, yes the ole my life is an open book routine. Let's put a camera man on you, following your every movement and recording EVERYTHING you do. Let's see if you have second thoughts about anything you do.

Privacy and liberty are correlated.

Sorry, blurred. Funny how it cleared up after Biden moved in.

Not really funny; active military installations can have features blurred or removed in public satellite imagery. When situations change — whatever they may be — features may also be unblurred. There isn't any "caving" on Google's part involved.

Again, this is Street View. Your post said "removed maps of streets near military bases"; this is Street View pictures adjacent to specific military installations. There is clear legal precedent to prohibit pictures of military installations, even from public lands.

That doesn't mean people haven't photographed them under all sorts of circumstances, because they have. We can argue all day long about whether or not Google should have removed them and likely get nowhere. It's not a political issue.

C'mon.

That's the only thing you've said that I agree with. ;)

Was blurring the grounds of a house at the US Naval Observatory depriving anyone of their rights? Liberties?

That's the only thing you've said that I agree with. ;)

I'm only concerned with the legal issues, not political ones. There is plenty of precedent:

And yes, I realize the irony. ;)

Who cares? Cheney requested it, Google caved. Given that, I wouldn't trust them with any sensitive data.

If it's legal and supported by case law for the government to request the removal or obscuration of features which are a part of active government or military installations from public satellite imagery, how, precisely, does that represent Google caving, unless one expects Google to stake some kind of claim counter to law as a matter of principle?

(Ironically, Google is protecting what is defined in statute as "sensitive", here.)

That's one difference between us.

What the law allows for is quite important. Politics certainly can and does change law and policy, but a legal request made and honored is hardly caving on Google's part. You may not trust them for all sorts of reasons, but then, it's not just "Google". It's giving private information to any entity where said information is beyond your control.

7. Google caved to Cheney and removed his house from Google Earth.
8. Google caved to the Pentagon and removed maps of streets near military bases.

I agree with you on point #6, but as far as the other 2 go, get the facts right (in fact, all of you commenting on this issue need to get the facts right). Google has nothing to do with the maps that come to them from the government or federal agencies via satellite imagery (such as the case with your #7 and #8 points). The imagery of the Naval Observatory comes from Digital Globe.

This censorship wasn't by Google but those supplying Google the source images, the U.S. Geological Survey. Please do some research first.

Ok... this is a dramatization...

My girlfriend: G
Me: M

G: honey, look, Google came up with this tracking stuff.
M: mmm.... ok
G: I just put your phone number so I can track you
M: why you would like to do that?
G: why not?
M: what is the point?
G: to know where you are
M: what for?
G: Why not?
M: because... I do not know.
G: so what is the problem?
M: I do not know, why you would like to know where I am? you can call me.
G: Why you are so evasive?
M: I am not
G: do you have another girl?
M: no
........

So, in my case, my girlfriend is very jealousy, even from my male friends. She lives in another city 2 hours away and sometimes I go out for a beer when she thinks I am in bed. Otherwise she will tell me I have to go to her town next weekend instead of she coming to mine and go out with my friends and so on.

Any way, I believe this technology is going to create a lot of problems. Is very bad for controlling people.

I was an exchange student in teh US years ago and my host parents were a nightmare regarding rules. Imagine if they had such control over me today.

People need privacy, I believe the system is usefull but is not something fun to have, I mean, is promoted in the wrong context.

G:

OK re-read your post and see if it seems scary to you like it does to me.
