If you people fought like you do over things that really matter, the world would be a better place.

I'm gonna sit back and wait for the day i can strap a phone on my wrist and let you lot fight over these 'smartwatches'

Wow. This place has changed so much recently. I been a member for a long time but regular post in here. Why are people so negative when it comes to Google? I use Mac, but also use Android. Is not our fault that Apple likes to keep everything behind the scenes unlike Google that opens up everything to public and they go from there. Competition is always good and Remember apple wasn't first in anything in a very long time.
The change is all the promotion of products by former Apple partners who screwed Apple by appropriating their ideas via insider info they got from the partnership and one of their people being on Apples board. We come to macrumors to read about imagine this, mac rumors and all things Apple. If we wanted to know about Android and all things Google we would go to Googlerumors.com. Oddly, when you go to a Google fan page, there are no Apple people there.

Oh wow you are so daft

Let's refrain from personally insulting people.

It's not about being the first person to create "A" tablet, or "A" a smart-watch.

Read my post again and again and again.

It's about creating _the_ phone, or _the_ smart-watch. There is a big distinction. The product is bringing-to-market-something-so-accessible, that it naturally appeals to the masses and integrates into their lives and becomes a part of the human mind/body. iPhone started that with smart-phones. iPad started that with tablets, and so on and so forth. Google did the same with search and maps.

Let's see if _LG_ does this with the smart watch where everyone will line-up for LG watches because they have got the it-factor... I wouldn't even bet my tea-money on that.

I bought a WIMM One smartwatch a few years ago. It had GPS in it, along with Bluetooth... and WiFi, so it didn't even need the mothership phone to update itself. And oh yeah, a battery :)
Say how long the battery lasts and than I will decide, if it has a battery or not. The Galaxy Gear has up to 2 days of battery which for a watch equals to no battery life. But at least it isn't so damn thick as the WIMM One. Look how small these new watches are supposed to be. How many minutes of turn-by-turn navigation and constant map redrawing until it is empty? To be useful underway the screen backlight must outshine the sun. That alone will empty the battery. It is undoable with todays technology, despite you people claiming to own such devices. What you have are dreams and promises, not useful products.

Becomes a part of the human mind/body???

My tablet or phone has never become part of my mind or body and the Smartwatch will not either. I enjoy my time without being dependant on technology. Try it sometime...

And yours is almost the only use case, in which a smartwatch does provide a (somewhat) better experience than a smartphone. But in most other cases it provides only equal, worse or no experience at all. Therefore potential customers will decide that the benefits do not outweigh the costs and won't buy one. Not additionally to the smartphone they already have. Bluetooth headsets also provide a better experience in the case of hands-free calling. But for most people most of the time one-handed calling is equally acceptable and headsets don't provide much benefit over this one task alone. So only very busy business people will trick themselves into believing a headset improves their productivity so much. Smartwatches won't become that giant future market big corporations like Google and Samsung are fighting over normally. If your Pebble works for you, fine. Consider yourself an early adopter, normal people won't buy what you buy.

Bluetooth headsets are a LIFESAVER for me. They allow me to talk and conduct business while driving. A smartwatch would provide the benefit of not having to take the phone out of my pocket, which is quite helpful at 80mph. I wouldn't say a smartwatch provides a better experience, that is the wrong way to look at it. I would say (for my needs) a smartwatch AND a smartphone in combination provides a better user experience than a smartphone by itself.

There are naysayers to every category. You can make a great argument saying most people don't "need" a smartphone over a regular flip phone, yet here we are with most consumers owning a smartphone.

Shame, people who are so close minded. I don't think it's very difficult to just simply skip over this thread when browsing the news threads. Personally, as an Apple fan, I love to read about other companies and how they interact and help to shape what Apple does. It makes for a more worldly and complete picture instead of just putting the Apple blinders on.

I used to collect watches. Loved them.

Haven't worn one since I owned my first cell phone with a clock built in.

I don't get the fascination with a watch. Just me I guess... but I wouldn't wear one.

As soon as the iPhone came with the M7 I ditched my FitBit even. The least I can carry or have to remember the better.

I don't see many young people older than 11 and younger than 50 wear watches often if at all. That's a huge market to convince to wear something additional again.

Wow! That Moto 360 watch looks pretty damn good!

It looks sick doesn't it?!!? With the metal band and knowing they will put in some MotoX UI/voice functionality, I'll be first in line for one of these bad boys.

No joke, it really does! This is the first smart watch that looks promising! I love the style of it. You could actually wear this in a business setting and most people wouldn't even know its a smart watch. Moto, gets it right again, along with the Moto G and Moto X.

Looks great! Very great! But... it troubles me that there is no constant predictable UI...

Every time you look at it's different, as far as I can tell.

I'm sure it's very good and I'd buy one, you know, there's the fact that no watch exists yet. It's just a concept at this point.

LG and Motorola have kind of announced products, it's definitely more of a concept. The motorola one is slated for summer 2014, and the LG is next quarter.

Should i replace my Rolex for this???

Btw. Motorola is a joke company. How many hype they make it is still a dead company.

Should I replace my Patek Philippe with this?

No thanks.
Give me a bracelet, not a watch.

but I must admit that a lot of people might buy this.

Tim Cook "we've got big plans".

Well then where are these products?

Others showing prototypes designed to explore public acceptance is far better than nothing. Plus at least it will help give Apple ideas if that's what they're struggling with.

Apples all talk and no visible action is eroding their credibility. But when you're as fat and happy as Apple, it doesn't seem to matter.

Apparently you have no idea how Apple operates. Apple will announce a product when they know they can release it now, not 6 months from now (summer ends on September 21). It's quite possible that Apple could release a smartwatch before Motorola ships theirs.

Secrecy doesn't erode their credibility, it's what makes Apple, Apple. Of course nowadays, we'll probably get a bunch of leaks in the weeks leading up to the announcement anyway.

----------

So it's vaporware unless Apple makes one? How daft are you mate?

http://motorola-blog.blogspot.com/2014/03/moto-360-its-time.html

And an actually product exists. Coming this Summer.

Products only exist when you can buy them... It remains to be seen if they can hit that target.

----------

Because the point of the video was to demo the software and give OEMS the OS to make it. And it is not vaporware. Look up the Moto 360.

Coming this "summer" with no product images other than renders available. I don't like using the term vaporware before a product misses its release date, but right now, it's only an announced product, not a real one.

This is the first time I'm getting afraid that Apple might lose everything to Google someday. Should they really keep everything closed? Google is so much faster with opening up everything..
I don't think that Apple will lose everything to Google someday, but I do agree with your sentiment here. This could be a worry for Apple. Apple is at their best when they lead the rest of the market by a significant amount of time, not when they are second to market and need to catch up. When the first iPhone shipped it was a year or more ahead of where the rest of the market was, since then yes Apple had innovated and improved the iPhone, but Android etc have been catching them fast. Now Android and Windows Phone etc are close to, or even surpassed, the iPhone.

With wearables Samsung are already in the market and now Android is publicly ahead of Apple. Of course we all assume, know, Apple have an iWatch that is almost ready for release, but not public yet. The iWatch may be ahead of Android wearables in terms of development but not by a significant amount, as was the case with the iPhone.

Google publicly courting developer, before Apple, could also be bad news for Apple. Wearable could become a category where people develop for Android first and iOS (iWatch) second.

The day..

when people break out into random dance with their wrist in air while in line at what I am assuming is the DMV and they are not charged immediately with disorderly conduct - will be the day this civilization will begin its final fall into collapse

It should be interesting to see if Google get significant penetration with this. I mean that Samsung just bailed on Android and went with their own OS in the latest flavor of their wrist attachments. I don't think they are coming back at this point.

You mean their smart watches that require a Samsung Android phone to work? They didn't exactly bail on Android. What OS the watch runs is really pointless when most of the data comes from the phone itself.

Your point would be valid if there was a Nexus 6. The red Nexus 5 come out a few months after it was initially released. Apple is basically re-releasing discontinued product because their ancient product is not moving off the shelves. There are no fresh ideas out of Apples camp.

Haha this guy. Just like wall street. Apple bad Google good even when Google bad and Apple good. Gotcha #
