Hmm Google really loves to double dip. I'll pay for the phone hardware so they can make bazillions off of harvesting my information.

If I were forced to buy an Android phone, this is the way I'd go. At least it can update to the latest Blandroid OS releases in a timely manner (if ever) unlike most non-Apple flagship phones (I'm side-glancing at you, Samsung). More importantly to most people is a good camera and screen. I love that Apple's chips SCREAM, but in an entry level phone, Apple's features skew a bit in the wrong direction, at least until stuff like serious AR justify that additional, wasted horsepower in their chips. Right now, it's mostly just bragging rights.

I hope GrapheneOS will support this phone. Would be a great and inexpensive phone for some tinkering that isn't possible on Apple's closed platform.

GrapheneOS seems to have the same device support as the official Google ROMs. So, it appears they work directly of Google's ROM. I'd expect it'll support the Pixel 4a as soon as they update their build from Google's. Couldn't say how long the delay is.

If you’re referring to a top level camera, maybe. On the other hand, every entry-level buyer knows they’re getting an entry-level Tamara, which for most phones these days is decent anyway.

Otherwise, are you referring to an easy to use OS, lack of preinstalled bloatware, and the wild west of Google play? I think these features are exactly why entry level customers like parents and grandparents buy iPhones.

I'm sure Samsung, Huawei, LG, etc are taking notice that their OS provider is now competing with them in multiple market segments...

Junk. Tiny screen. Small battery. Outdated CPU, not much storage... hard pass.
Tiny? I wish the screen was even smaller like the SE.

Funny how even a discount Android device these days has no notch. Apple, get better.

C’mon man, the budget SE doesn’t have a notch and none of those Android phones without a notch also don’t have all the sensors for 3D Face Unlock.

Comment. Better.

I like it! I would probably get this although the SE would probably last longer and get more software support if I had to guess. But just the design of this thing blows the SE out of the water if you ask me mainly because of the overall look not taking specs into account. Apple needs a better budget phone to really compete- like you know, maybe one without giant bezels...

Right now it's the ecosystem that would have the edge, like iMessage if you needed that

If the 4a is anything like the 3a, I’m inclined to think the SE is the better phone. The iPhone SE uses the same processor as the flagship iPhone, while the 3a used a mid-range processor relative to the Pixel 3 (bear in mind that the Pixel 3’s processor, performance wise, was a year or two behind the flagship processor on the iPhone, which, of course, is the norm for non-Apple ARM). Pixel is a phone with a well regarded camera and multiple year update support, making it pretty much the best Android phone (though it doesn’t seem to be moving an appreciable number of units, I suspect most Android users are not buying flagship phones or mid-range phones). That said, Android silicon is just so far behind Apple’s that, if performance is a concern of yours, you’re probably buying an iPhone. The Pixel 4a might have a niche, though, if its camera drastically outperforms the iPhone SE’s. (Though I’m seriously wondering whether phone camera performance is approaching the place where it becomes Good Enough and additional performance gains result in diminishing returns.)

Really hope a few people can do a good in-depth camera comparison between this new Google 4A and the Apple SE.
with $50 between them, it's a pretty fair test to put them side by side and which delivers the best photo's

For myself and I'm sure many others, pretty much all phones are fast enough now to handle typical everyday requirements, but the Camera is the key aspect.

If anyone finds a Pixel 4A vs iPhone SE Camera review/test, please let us know :)

To all those USB-C Supporters..... ( Sigh ),

The 4a include a USB-C to USB-C cable that only works with USB 2.0 speed.

Just let that sink in.

Just seen a great "Super Saf" camera comparison.
Not yet watched it.
Only the 1st few seconds, where it's instantly apparent the Google Pixel is handling the Sky better which is blown out white on the iPhone, also the video stabilisation on the pixel is obviously better .... Interesting.

Off t watch the whole review now.
Here's the link if anyone is interested:

Has no one been able to fold the display controller like Apple? Maybe they have a patent? It's not all screen, look at the chin.

Really..... At this price point you are complaining about the Chin of the Pixel 4a against the competing All SE product?
Irrespective of what OS either device is running I'd far rather have the screen of the device on the right, wouldn't you?

I believe the point was the A13 is overkill for the SE; for a 4.7" $399 phone. But you have to also remember Apple makes the chips, they arent paying Qualcomm like these other cheap phones, so the cost difference between an A13 and say an A11 may be minimal.

For people who want an under 5" display and Touch ID that's who the SE mainly is for. There arent very many companies making a phone under 5 inches, let alone at $399.

The 4A is competing with all of the mid-tier notchless all screen devices from Oneplus, Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco, Motorola, Samsung, etc. Apple is offering a small device which none of these really offer. A different type of device.

Yes they could do better with those bezels, but not everyone wants a 5.8" screen. You're also getting top tier specs otherwise including the processor and OS updates for 5 years. That's $80/year cost. The 4A will get 3 years of updates which makes it $117/year in cost. It costs more to own the 4A overall; and other Android devices are worse with 1-2 years. Up-front cost isnt everything, longevity counts too.

You weren’t limited to the SE, the 11 and XR have LED screens as well. Do you see the flicker? I can see it sometimes, especially while scrolling text and it does make my eyes hurt sometimes. I’m also conscious of screen burn more so than my iPhone 8.

no flicker I've noticed, through the screen pixel density and clarity is obviously worse than my plus screen

didn't consider the 11 or XR because no touch ID

the SE cannot burn in, unlike cheap inferior OLED screens

$100 cheaper than the SE (128GB both). SE has better processor, video camera, and longer support. Pixel has bigger screen, better still camera, and an 18W charger in the box.

Of course people will actually choose based on OS. But I am thrilled seeing affordable phones get this good. Not just because I feel bad when the best someone could afford a few years ago was a terrible Alcatel. But also because it really ups the pressure on $1,000 phones to be great.

It's 2020, Apple still just offer 5GB of free iCloud storage while Google offers 15GB. Why Apple so greedy???
