If I can ask my phone where I lost my keys, and it tells me where they are because of this technology, then that is awesome.

The only people that should be afraid of Google (and the NSA) information gathering are terrorists and pedophiles, so if you don't count yourself part of either or those groups there is nothing to worry about.

But honestly there must be a lot of pedophiles and terrorists out there the way people always complain about this stuff.

Tell that to the Jews, gypsies and gays prior to WW2... Or motorcycle club members in Qld Australia right now.

While this is cool tech, Google will certainly use it in ways the public will find uncomfortable. I believe this is part of their efforts in robotics for home delivery, but I also believe this is "Street View" for everywhere their cars and backpackers can't go -- all the places you scan uploaded to their servers. They'll get complete maps of homes, office buildings, etc. Not the future I want.

I have to admit that's one of the most infuriating attitudes I run across, and I hear a lot of it. Personal privacy is the foundation of the US constitution. Not one of the amendments means a bloody thing unless you have a very strong right to privacy. The idea that only criminals have anything to fear ignores this. We ALL have a lot to fear from a police state that watches anything and can (and has) declared random people as 'enemy combatants' or 'terrorists' or 'deviants'. Just ask those that lived under the KGB or Stazi if they had any problem with it. If the NSA or any other police agency want to spy on me, then show probable cause and get a warrant from a real judge, not one of those 'national security' rubber-stamps. Until then I don't want the NSA, FBI or even the local cop on the beat spying on me. Period.

As far as Google, Facebook, etc spying, it's why I try not to use them any more than absolutely necessary and I minimize the personal info I give them whenever possible. I am not a commodity.

You are way too trusting. I guess you're guilty until proven innocent. Crimminy.

I get the value of 3D mapping. I don't get the purpose it serves on a phone.

This is what I was going to say. Why make a special phone to do this? The tech could just be in a standalone product, designed to do it the best it can. Rather than in a phone, which will certainly be a compromise since its first purpose is not "3D scanner".

I hate Google as much as the next guy, but for all the people complaining about the customized ads that attack them at every turn. Just install AdBlock. It takes a whole minute and you don't have to worry about ads again. I know it doesn't stop Google from trying to track everything you do, but it stops the ads. No point in always complaining about ads when there is a simple fix.

Not sure how well the tracking blockers work, but I use two of those as well. I've cut myself off from all Google products, have the tracking blockers going as well as AdBlock and don't have to worry about being subjected to Google. You know, except for when I visit MACRUMORS and see a Google story on the front page pretty much everyday.

Uggh, don't map my 3D space. Give me a watch that will track and store all my biometric data! That's so much less intrusive. AMIRITE?

Am I the only one starting to think that Google is genuinely innovative, and Apple is not?

Glass, Loon, and now this, have all popped up within a short time frame, and all have the potential to change things dramatically.

What's Apple done within the same time frame? Besides the usual refreshes / updates to their usual lineup.

I've been thinking that there should be an app or something like this for years. Do something like The Sims where you can see what a remodel of your home would be like, see if you can fit new furniture somewhere. See what a new paint job would look like, etc. Now if only we could have holodecks like on Star Trek.

This is going to be awesome..."Google, where are my keys?" ... "You left them on the kitchen counter this morning." ... "Thanks Google!"

Now that Google has a hand in most people's digital lives, they want to branch out into the physical world :D

Technology with a lot of potential. In a few years when it's standard you'll have millions of potential devices precisely measuring and mapping the world on googles behalf.

The thing is these Google projects are still in "beta" or earlier stages. Google just has more of an open door policy when it comes to announcing projects, and sometimes they just put them out way too soon (Google Wave?) With Apple you don't know anything but rumors until they invite you to Cupertino to show something off.

I don't. Google announces lots of cool things, that never come to fruition, or get released as 'beta' and then languish for a while before being killed because they don't work too well. It's the 'throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks' model. Apple, if you catch the patent announcements that show up here and elsewhere, looks into lots of things, but they're more focused and they only make a big deal about them if they're going to be a product they think might succeed.

It's also an apples/oranges thing. Apple makes products and concentrates on ideas that will fit with their products. google sells advertizing, so they will try anything to see if they can scrape a buck off of it.

Nothing. MacRumors is a brand only. All kinds of rumours will be put up here. I asked the staff here what the? And their response was "that's how it is, don't like it, feel free to go to other websites and leave MacRumors."

A tolerate it or get lost attitude they had.

Why let it bother you? The vast majority of rumors on here are Apple-centric. It's not like getting the occasional bit of Google/Samsung/Microsoft rumors, (which more often than not are based around products that compete directly with Apple), will taint your soul with their mere presence. If you don't like it, scroll past it.

Revealed here for first time

THEE prerecorded message on the Project Tango Smart Phones…..”Welcome to the Goo-gle; You can 3-D map the inside of your dwelling for us on the Blue Smartphone; or you can 3-D map the inside of your dwelling for us on the Red Smartphone”.

People on this site just love to hate on Google because they think Apple has their best interest at heart. They apparently forget that both companies are in it to make money and will do whatever they need to in order to make the investors happy.

Apple is just dreamy while Google is the devil! Id say the truth is somewhere in the middle for both.

Geez....there is always ONE guy who refuses to look at the world without being under the influence of the Jobsian reality shield. And this must be the same guy who believes that Google is not altruistic in its endeavors.

Who let this guy into this forum?

So I look through the posts in this thread to see a bunch of people complaining about how this idea is dumb and useless, and it's such an invasion of privacy because Google will know things about your life. Why are they saying these thing? Because this is a Google made thing. That means all the fan boys will bitch about how they don't like it. If apple was working on this, you'd see a lot more comments about how this idea is so perfect and brilliant, and all the fan boys would be talking about how the wanted to get one asap. And this being an invasion of privacy? If you have a 5S, they have your fingerprints. But of course the fan boys chose to ignore any bad things about their God Apple......

This is true fan boy talk of someone coming to the defense of apple. What is non innovative about google products? Past and present? And what is so innovative about Apple's products? Answer me that
