It may be good but the fact that I have to pull over to the side of the road and input an address is a deal killer. i would rather use a flawed Apple Maps product with Siri on the go.

I don't know about the iOS implementation of Google Maps, but on my ancient Droid X (andoid 2.x), there is voice search in both the maps and turn-by-turn navigation apps.

Just remembering haters saying that Apple will never approve this app...

Hallelujah! You really have to applaud Google, BAILING Apple out from its WORST customer and public relations DISASTER in recent memory.

Google could have let Apple HANG itself with its own mistakes, but rather showed enough RESPECT to iOS users to give them a CHOICE. Would Apple have done this for ANYONE, let alone Google? Of course not!

That alone shows which company is truly more pro-consumer rather than anti-competition.

Now if only Apple could take that SMALL step in doing what Android does, which is ALLOW its users to CHOOSE their OWN default apps, that would be a BRILLIANT gesture of good faith to all iOS users. Let's just hope Tim Cook follows Steve Jobs' advice and "does the right thing".
Hahaha so funny. Because you think that Google did it for the customers and not because they lost all the users data they can sell ?

Welcome to disney land man.

Like I predicted, we now have Apple Maps with turn by turn and Google Maps that are better than the app from iOS 5. All thanks to Apple kicking out the old stock Maps app, and due to competition.

Are all the people who were bitching all this time going to say they're sorry and admit they were wrong? Don't think so.

Apple removed google maps and replaced it with their own inferior solution which damaged their brand and led to the termination of several key execs.

The google map app has always been better than the apple maps app, and the improvements that are now showing up on the iOS version are just them bringing it up to par WITH THEIR OWN APP. They've had **** like turn-by-turn since 2009.

One thing with Streetview, I can't seem to see a pegman?

Am I just going to have to live with going back to the map and dragging the pin?

When I was going somewhere new I always used to drag pegman up and down the road a bit so I could see the approach to wherever I was going before I set off (it's quicker than just using the little arrows).

And yes it's only a minor gripe, I am very glad to see these maps back in an app!

Excuse me! Maps was the first turn by turn I've ever used. sheesh. Before Maps, all I had was the static Google maps directions on my iPhone and it was a PITA to use while driving. Actually dangerous.

MapQuest has free voice turn by turn navigation for years.

I love both the apple maps and google maps app. Maybe it's just me but the apple maps kinda looks like they were going for an old road map design.

More design then function

I'm sorry, perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point, but how does any of that change how using street view works?

I also get annoyed when the ketchup won't come out of the bottle, but saying that doesn't help me use street view any more than your apple maps complaint does.

I'm saying fly over is mostly useless

Just downloaded Google Maps and sent Apple's Maps to the 'trash' folder. It's great being able to see the boundaries and property number again.

Am I the only one envisioning the iPad (mini) + Apple/Google Maps apps replacing built-in GPS systems in cars in the coming years?

Apple (and Google, and other tech companies) are the kings when it comes to UI / UX. Not so much TomTom, Garmin and the likes. Instead of every car manufacturer having their own implementation of GPS navigation, it's now going to be increasingly dominated by Apple and Google. About time, too.

just noticed the one pinch zoom - awesome feature and dont have to use 2 hands to zoom in or out.

- double click and move down to zoom out.
- double click and move up to zoom in.

I would personally like to thank Apple. Had they not pulled Google maps when they did, we would be much further from getting this app which should have been developed years ago, but Google insisted on controlling our user experience because they had a contract. ****** Google.

Welcome to disney land man.

Funny you say that. If this was an Apple product, it would probably run only on a Mac and iOS and would cost us $149.98 yearly subscription to use and have the word "magical" in its app description...

Nicely done... nicely done.

This is a better app than Apply by a wide margin. I am happy to say that I think this will be the new standard and Apply has no hope of standing out and apart from Google Maps. I see a failed endeavor coming and a disappearing apps in the foreseeable future.

Apple's greed would never have allowed them to bring Voice guided navigation to iPhone 4. Google has done an amazing job!

By the way, is anyone noticing choppy pan/zoom and low frame rates on iPhone 4 using this app? (I know its common to see this in the first versions, but just want to check with others).:D

Or maybe there are legitimate reasons why it's not included for the iPhone 4. Your second point is performance related. It could be performance, it could be data usage, it could be other things. Why do the requirements have anything to do with Apple at all?
