The implementation of Turn by Turn Navigation seems very incomplete. No easy option to reroute, no option to find nearby gas stations for example, and very generic routes. I give it a failing grade at this time and I'm going to stick with Waze.

Oh, and not iPad optimized.

Choppy UI

Apple's greed would never have allowed them to bring Voice guided navigation to iPhone 4. Google has done an amazing job!

By the way, is anyone noticing choppy pan/zoom and low frame rates on iPhone 4 using this app? (I know its common to see this in the first versions, but just want to check with others).:D

Hallelujah! You really have to applaud Google, BAILING Apple out from its WORST customer and public relations DISASTER in recent memory.

Google could have let Apple HANG itself with its own mistakes, but rather showed enough RESPECT to iOS users to give them a CHOICE. Would Apple have done this for ANYONE, let alone Google? Of course not!

That alone shows which company is truly more pro-consumer rather than anti-competition.

Now if only Apple could take that SMALL step in doing what Android does, which is ALLOW its users to CHOOSE their OWN default apps, that would be a BRILLIANT gesture of good faith to all iOS users. Let's just hope Tim Cook follows Steve Jobs' advice and "does the right thing".

ALLOWing default apps IS a pretty GOOD idea, only if YOU can be SURE that the apps that people SELECT are RELIABLE.

In all honesty and seriousness, you (ignoring your caps lock problem) definitely sound like you have a major problem with Apple here. Apple admits they screwed up. They're going to fix it. People make mistakes, are you telling me that you never have?

Back to the matter in hand. The Google app is better for POI's and map visibility (prefer the colours of Google Maps rather than Apple's at the moment), but for speed and turn by turn directions then Apple's wins hands down. The ability to get directions just using Siri is invaluable for me on my Bluetooth handsfree (as long as I navigate using addresses rather than POI's, of course). I can press the Siri button, say "Take me to 000 Como Road, London" and it will get me directions to the door. I can't do that with Google.

Google also needs to fix the lag issue. It's not silky smooth scrolling on the iOS app, the 4S is more than capable of smooth scrolling a vector map as evidenced by Apple maps. Hopefully will come with the iPad update.

Well, here's what I get from Raleigh, NC. It is truly the only thing I missed when Apple maps took over. :(

Set a route and then click public transport. It will work. For some reason starting as public transport doesn't. I assume its a bug.

I have said this before and will probably say it again. If we removed the ability, from a desktop os, to set defaults, people would be up in arms. For some reason, this flies with mobile os's, and not just iOS. My opinion isn't limited to google maps either. Why can't we set a default browser, music player, etc.? I'd think because it hasn't been challenged enough.

Police Warn of Safety Concerns from Google Maps
12 December 2012

"Police in Colac, west of Melbourne, say faults with Google maps are putting people's lives at risk along the Great Ocean Road and in the southern Otways.

Sergeant Nick Buenen says trucks, buses and tourists are being directed down Wild Dog Road, which is a one-way track, not built for heavy traffic."

Good bye apple maps... May you be forgotten forever.

Shame on Apple for such a terrible attempt at something they should be so good at.

They'll have to do a lot for anyone to trust similar home built apps again

Has anyone got any idea how you can get a satellite view without the map overlay? As far as I can tell Google Maps only has Standard and Hybrid views, there's no plain "satellite".

likely to be the fastest downloaded app in history. Of course, that will be noticed in silence by Apple :)

Google maps is pretty impressive, far better and reliable than Apple Maps at the moment.

I'm sure a year or two down the road apple maps will be reliable enough to use in place of Google.

Street View - so useful

is it me, or is it that street view is not working. I am in the UK. Used to work with the old google map app. Unless I am doing it wrong. How is everyone getting street view to work?

tried using the navigation today going from home to work, the british sounding voice seemed pretty natural, more natural than the british siri voice. However some words pronunciation needs to be re-looked at. Other than that, seems okay. However I think I will stick to tom-tom for navigation on road purposes. Street View still do not seem to know how it works on this app. I know on the computer or the old google map app, you can drag the little person (dont know how else you can describe it) to the street, (where the yellow line seems to be) and you get the street view. Cannot figure it out on this app though.

The maps for some places are not up to date, still shows a car showroom infront of my house, which has not been in existence for a year now.

Thank you very much man. That's a great tip for sure. I don't use public transport here much outside of cabs, but I do in Chicago and google maps was great for that. It listed train times and everything. I also use walk/bike routes around home.

Excellent news!! look forward to downloading it.
I wonder how Apple are going to crawl out of this situation. Even if and when their maps are as accurate as Googles', what's going to make people switch?

Often there are trees in the way

Fly over isn't very detailed.

U can't see buildings close in detail

I'm sorry, perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point, but how does any of that change how using street view works?

I also get annoyed when the ketchup won't come out of the bottle, but saying that doesn't help me use street view any more than your apple maps complaint does.

Is there a way to navigate to your contacts? I know that the new contacts are linked through the Apple maps program. But there should be some way to access your Google contacts and never get to them.

Click the map until the address marker appears then tap the box at the bottom of the page and you get the Street View option.
