It's "pretty ironic" how the latest and greatest Iphone(s) king-size were introduced ... after... soo ... longtime after Google.

For that, i m really thankful to have an Android since the beginning

then i guess your double-plus thankful that apple developed the iPhone & iOS in order to give Google & Android something to copy from...cuz heres what it looked like pre-iPhone:

hot.

Did they remove the bottom border of the app icon?

All google apps have that ugly bottom border on the app icons, because of this I have removed all google apps.

google does not like the "flat" iOS 8 design?

The Apple Maps app could be great if they just let us avoid tolls... Why is this so hard?
That is the ONLY reason I use Google Maps. smh

I find it hard to navigate the new Google look. The symbols aren't standard. I take it they're from Android. Maps is quite good in L.A., and with the exception of one feature-- the ability to swipe through the turn-by-turn routes-- I prefer the Maps interface by a lot.

Totally agree I got the new inbox invite the other day. Ughhhh it's simply trying too hard. It's fussy and you have to learn the interface. Google maps I use a lot so I reserving judgement until I see it.

A lot of the Google apps haven't had that for some time now.

Ever since the last major interface update to Google Maps I just get lost around the app. The fact they're cramming so much into it doesn't help either. I really dislike having an Android interface with non-standard icons for things like sharing on iOS too. If I wanted Android, I'd gotten a Nexus.

I for one am looking forward to Nokia's new HERE app.

Yesss! I tend to get lost in Google Maps too! The main reason I still like to use Apple Maps is because of its simplistic design! It's just so easy to focus on especially while driving!

I will only download if they get rid of the crappy 3d icon that is not worthy of my home screen.

This is false. They've been flattening, albeit slowly. Hangouts, Voice, gmail, walket, chrome all flat.

This update initally strikes me as unnecessary bloat. We'll see.

Lollipop is exactly why Jony Ive shouldn't be in charge of software UI. iOS 7 and 8 are a complete mess when it comes to UI.

I dunno, i prefer the iOS 8-style UI (7 was terrible) and clearly Google likes some of the ideas too since they're also going the 'lots of whites and colours' and 'circular radio toggles' with 'flat/text buttons'.

To be fair, both look atrocious to me.

I personally can't wait until the flat fad fades away and we can see depth returning to our GUI.

Actually looks really nice. I drive but that Uber integration seems like it could come in handy for a lot of people.

huh? That didnt make sense at all..and whoever plus 1 your comment is clueless as well....Google maps has always made improvements point blank....what Google maps offered in 2005 people was paying for tom tom/garmin etc and wasnt getting nearly as much options to what google was offering..

Oh before you rebuff this please give dates from atleast 2005 as to how they were behind and what was introduced when Apple came out with theirs...Just ridiculous comment point blank....but anyway competition is good non the less...

I hope Apple adds this to Maps. Uber is great. Also, the guy above needs to chill ^^^

No kidding. The guy he quoted gave a compliment to the look of Google Maps and the Uber integration, yet the other guy goes on a rant about something completely unrelated.

Fresh newbie right out of the shiny Android plastic bag :D

Agreed. I’m really jealous of Android users now. That design looks very playful but doesn’t make so many affordances as iOS. And at least Google is allowing a bit more colour than just white a bit of blue text and more white.

Uber?
Disgusting, surprised they push this horrendous company.

Glassed Silver:mac

well google is a major shareholder but i agree

if other companies can not add their services in the app as easily as say in the google transit partner program then i am quite disappointed.

They are certainly taking design seriously with Lollipop, and have built an entirely new design formula going forward- "Material Design." Even as a long time Apple user, it looks really good. Apple should be paying attention.

Indeed, as much as I've always preferred Apple's designs over anything else for the last 14 years, the new Material Design seems to prove that Google got flat interfaces right better than Apple.

To Apple's defence, they've worked with flat interfaces only for the last 2 years, while Google got it finally right after 6-7 years. I believe iOS 9 will include a few minor changes that will make the OS better as a whole.

Love google maps

When will apple ever let us default maps to google maps?

The day Apple lets us delete stock apps.

What they will have to do though one day, is force the users to have at least one SMS App, one Maps App, one Phone App, one Music App, etc. or else, there's going to be a lot of links between apps that will be broken. What they need to do is add more APIs that standardize the information needed to switch between apps.

The job has been started with iOS 8, and it's on the right track, but it's not done.

I like the fact that Lollipop doesn't mix its buttons with some being symbols and some being words. The music app on iOS is a prime example of this chaos. On the iPhone, the words barely fit the screen and looks awkward. I can't wait to see what Google's music app looks like. I'm not above switching to a Nexus 6 just because of the UI.

Hopefully they'll include night mode, adjustable volume for turn-by-turn, and a better turn-by-turn voice. I keep using Apple Maps for navigation for these three reasons (especially night mode), despite Google Maps' overall superiority.

I strongly suspect something political going on with the lack of night mode. The android version has had night mode ever since they added the navigator (which used to be a separate app). I just can't figure out what the political reason is though - are they still mad at Apple forcing them to add turn-by-turn to iOS GMaps because of the whole Apple Maps fiasco?

This. Finally to be have a good offline capable Navteq data set to compare with again when planning a route!

Not. Google Maps was a pile of poo until late 2011 compared to Garmin/TomTom especially in regards to routing. Not to mention the complete lack of offline capability. Then some switch flipped somewhere and GMaps became amazing. I have no idea what that switch was but I think it may be that 2011 is when they integrated the data pulled from street view?
