Just got the update.. is it just me, or is the icon..wonky? Driving my OCD crazy!

Uber?
Disgusting, surprised they push this horrendous company.

Maybe it's different in Europe, but taxi cabs in America are horrible in most places. The cars are filthy, they show up late or not at all when you call, and a lot of the drivers hassle you if you want to pay with a credit card. Companies like Uber and Lyft are a very welcome alternative.

Confirmed: optimized for iPhone 6/6 Plus.

Yeah, the icon is ugly. Maybe if the green wasn't as bold it might be better. Still going to use it, just don't like the icon.

It's "pretty ironic" how the latest and greatest Iphone(s) king-size were introduced ... after... soo ... longtime after Google.

For that, i m really thankful to have an Android since the beginning

Dear "macrumors newbie", thank you for being a brand new iOS user ... c'mon, let's be honest : you just switched to a new iPhone or you would never be reading this post ... :p

Yea it’s simply horrendous to introduce competition into a market where people still pay like 12$ for a 4 minute drive.

The only resistance Uber is getting is from taxi companys who want the 80ies to continue and be able to charge super high (often government mandated) prices without facing any competition.

----------

Cab drivers in Germany have to pass such a test as well and indeed, they can often use ways, that other cars can't use.
Some roads are one-way for regular use, but cabs can enter them either way. That's a big benefit and personally, you'll only see me use a cab as a last resort when I have to be on time and nothing else will get me there for less in the given time I have.
5 bucks more or less isn't deciding at that point.

Of course there are people who ride cabs and the like regularly and plan those rides ahead, so maybe the Uber ride makes a lot of sense to them.

The problem is with the company as a whole, they might not suck here and there, but do I want to sponsor that empire? Nope, I don't. Not directly at least.

And now that you mention it, well I guess I can distantly remember there being some form of involvement from Google.
That's quite disappointing, because you can say a lot of things about Google, but work ethics isn't exactly an area they are known not to value.

You are not the first German I have heard talking like this. Germans seem to have a much more negative attitude towards competition and the free market in general than americans do.
Most people would welcome a new player in the market as competition is known to lower prices and increase quality.
you won’t be able to find any contradicting evidence to this.

Europeans in general however like to see the negative aspects like „The poor taxi drivers might loose their jobs“ and stuff like that which is simply not true.
If Uber were to really take over the market drivers could simply quit their jobs and switch to Uber, or another one of the many companies that will probably copy their business model once they start making real money.

If the computer were invented in europe today, people would probably demand the government to pass a law that makes computers illegal in order to preserve the jobs of the people producing typewriters.

That is an incredibly simplistic way to look at his comment. Nobody would support competition just for the sake of it, if they don't believe that it offers value over what already exists. He clearly doesn't think it offers more value (and I can certainly see his points) so he isn't going to support an inferior product as a result.

Competition is based on providing a better product, not supporting a worse product for the sake of competition.

Just downloaded. YES! Now if they would update the voice app to match. I refuse to use hangouts.
Google Voice? That has been updated to a new flat icon in the latest update from a month or two ago.

As for Hangouts, unfortunately more and more Google Voice features are being moved there, for better or worse.

Well yeah, but too much information and you'll see that neither party was completely right or wrong. And that just won't do.

It's simple business negotiation. Apple wanted turn-by-turn and Android features for Maps. Google wanted branding and more information for targetted marketing.

Apple said no, then Google said no. There is no fault. Some people wanted Google to simply give Apple its best features in exchange for nothing more. That's just unrealistic.

I understand that, but this is an Apple site. A lot of people here terms to see things from an Apple colored lens.

Still not able to rename the places in favourite!

Why till now this option is not available?!!

First there is no Google Voice integration yet for iOS hangouts yet, only android come to find out. Also the update was pretty sad. Still uses iOS 6 style UI. A neglected service/app by Google.

Try updating to the latest Google Maps then.

The new icon is not completely flat, either. Theres still a shading effect on the bottom, and around the top right where the pin is. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but I pulled up the Google Map's page in the iTunes store on a retina Mac, and there is indeed still shading and a 3D effect. Just a lot more subtle now.

Some parts have already been moved over in iOS as well, like receiving and placing VoIP type of calls using the Google Voice number that is now part of Hangouts.

As for the design of the Voice app, it's rather flat and quite a bit more consistent with post iOS 7 design than it would be with iOS 6.

----------

I use youtube, maps and translate and all of them have the bottom border in the app icon!
You mentioned that all the apps have that border and that you removed them all. Seems like that's certainly not the case given that 3 apps, or more like 2 now, out of close to 50 from Google is certainly not even close to all (it's not even 10% of them).

Hopefully never.

Hopefully? Why?

----------

Tests have shown that the larger screen Android phones struggle with graphic intensive applications because of the processing power needed to power the large screens.

What?

----------

Apparently you didn't hear the reports of Apple wanting turn by turn and all the other features Google Maps was offering on Android, but Google refused access unless Apple allowed Google to snoop on even more customer data and prominently put a Google branding inside the application.

So, Google must give those features for free?

----------

then i guess your double-plus thankful that apple developed the iPhone & iOS in order to give Google & Android something to copy from...cuz heres what it looked like pre-iPhone:

hot.

Still posting that debunked picture?

Exactly this, two big players negotiating and not agreeing

yeb. judging by the posts on uberpeople its obvious they are raking in the big bucks and the envy of others.

as for you hypothetical and totally made up assumption in your last post. one would assume that those pesky europeans could have found a way to protest the smartphones and tablets and the app revolution we have seen in the last 7 years but of course they havent.

Just look at the threads when they complain about the prices they pay compared to those in the US for Apple products. Aussies do it, too. People can't seem to wrap their minds around the consequences of the laws and taxes they have, and expect Apple to simply eat the higher cost of doing business in countries with high minimum wages, VAT taxes, and things like mandatory 2 and 3 year warranties.
